World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Allowing some 3rd place teams from the group stage to advance to the knockout stage certainly ruined this tournament.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Well that was annoying. Now let's keep showing ronaldo like he was the hero.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

being rarely in this thread, you all know I'm not much of a football fan.

But in hindsight- the goal that Portugal got- that was very set up by how frustrated France had gotten- that throw in was super sloppy, and when Portugal got control of the ball- it was mostly 1-1 covering and no real defense for France. Everyone had so much focus to win in OT, they didn't defend, which gave Portugal the ONE chance they really needed to win.

Ugly, no doubt. Still- France clearly messed up that whole play. From the bad handball call up to the goal- they lost focus, and got burned for it.

It IS fair to say France lost instead of Portugal won. But I think one can say that Portugal just messed with France's head all day long- which lead to the goal. From this sideline football fan.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Well a lot of boring games in this tournament. But I agree we got what we deserved. France had a better team but missed on their chances and we have who we have. Kind of like getting swept by UAA. Glad for the Portuguese people though.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Leave it to Taylor Twellman to set the rest of the ESPN crew straight. If the Italians had won today we'd be talking about their brilliant defense, not how ugly it was.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

What foul?
Let me try to explain exactly why I said that. A commentator made mention of it after the game as well.
France succeeded in large part because of being really, really physical all tournament long. I feel like it not only bordered on dirty, it was dirty. But generally they got away with it. For instance in the 53ed minute yesterday the ball came into the Portuguese box and the goalie went for it. After he got it he was holding his neck.... Because the French had basically tried to keep him from getting the ball by gouging his neck as he went up with their fingers..
If an opponent had the ball they wouldn't just run next to the guy with it and try to kind of elbow him off, they would not only hold his jersey a bit and use the hands to slow him down, they did it more aggressively than anyone else by far, and if that didn't work they eventually blasted the guy right off the ball. Generally no call. This stuff went on all tournament.
At the end however, they ran out of energy and Portugal was good enough they could move the ball fast enough that the French pretty much gave it up. It looked to me the French were really tired as the end of the game approached and it was only a matter of time before Portugal scored.
Anyway they were at home and they almost always got away with it and because of that I was rooting for whoever was playing against them.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Ok but you were referring to payet on ronaldo, no? That wasn't a foul

I watched a lot of the tournament and really didn't see anything i would classify as dirty from france specifically. Then again, i probably have a higher threshold for physical play than most fans.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

There will be no undefeated team in the NWSL this year. FCKC takes down the Portland Thorns.

Did I read somewhere that the some of the Frenchies refused to accept their silver medals? Kind of poor sportsmanship, I'd say.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

You thought England losing a Euro match to Iceland was embarrassing?

In Champions League qualifying Celtic lost to a semi-pro team.

It was Brendan Rodgers' first game at Celtic. Off to a great start!

Oh, and the goal-scorer? His full time job is as a policeman.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

That was a highly controversial finish with the Cold War looming over the decision.

Yeah. but we were so butthurt over it that 20 years later we ruined the Olympics so we could win "fairly."

We were butthurt over the losing the rematch in Seoul.

The coach selected the wrong team. He had only one 3 point shooter on the team. He thought the pound it inside game that he played in college would work.

The internationals knew it was an outside game and brought shooters - lots of shooters.

The only game the US lost was to Russia, by 6 points. The other 7 games the US won by an average of 36.
