Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Honduras are still in it, so you never know. Crazy things happen in single elimination. (But yes, they and Costa Rica are both not playing with their full squads.)

Perhaps I should have said "less of a long-shot" rather than "more of a threat"? When everybody is on even footing as far as squad quality, the odds are prohibitively in favor of either Mexico or the U.S. winning. That would change if the U.S. and Mexico A- or B teams were going up against the Honduras or Costa Rica A teams.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I did get the joke. However, they didn't even come close to getting through Africa's qualifying. The joke implies that they had to come close at some point.

Maybe it was from 1978 when they finished 2nd in the African Cup of Nations?

FWIW, they also have an outside chance (need to beat Senegal in Senegal) to advance to the final leg of African Qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (my father-in-law took offense to this thread title...he is from Sao Paulo, and quickly noted that Rio will only be hosting 7 of the games...crazy Brazilians :p:D:D).

"Road to Sao Paulo" is a terrible title :p

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

sports illustrated website is reporting that the field for Wednesday's Gold Cup games is in atrocious condition.

Cripes!! That's suppose to be the premier venue in all of sports. Not some overused football field that the local HS and Colleges use in late october. I know Jerry built it to be all about his Cowboys, but ****, you would think they would have put in a better plan for a temporary grass field for soccer action.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

The song was actually about the Rio Grande and it was a thank to the bands American fans.

Actually, the lyrics are:

Her name is Rio, and she dances on the sand; just like the river twistin' through the dusty land.

The operative word is "like". Do they not teach that word up in Potsdam? :D

But the point about which geographical "Rio" is referenced in the song is correct: it is the Rio Grande. "Oh Rio, Rio, dance across the Rio Grande..."

I went to Clarkson. The Mount Man went to our farm team, Oswego. He works in Watertown.

And Potsdam is a wonderful town. Much better than that dump 11 miles to the southwest. :D

I've been to it a few times. And not for hockey. It isn't that nice. Once you get past St. Regis Falls (from the east), it's just awful.
