World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

It's good to see Real Salt Lake representing the East...because when I think of the eastern US, I think of Salt Lake City. :p

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I'm pretty sure its East of Los Angeles (although probably not by much). :D

It's a rule other leagues might do well to adopt - top 8 teams make the tournament regardless of which conference they're in. Any team who makes the playoffs finishing 5th or less in their conference get placed in as the high seeds of the other conference.

Like the top 8 teams in the East and the top 8 teams in the West are really the 16 best teams in the NHL, right? MLS gets it right.

BTW, I was just reminded of how much of a dumbass Sepp Blatter is - remember when he complained that MLS doesn't follow the European schedule? That MLS is a summer league? Clueless.

I'm pretty sure most of the people in this thread would be more capable executives than Sepp Blatter. The man is a buffoon whose best skill is spreading dollars around to third world countries in exchange for votes.

I'm also looking forward to the Cascadia Cup in 2011. All three fanbases should have pretty good crowds and don't really like each other (with Seattle-Portland bordering on out and out hatred)

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Gotta feel for Morales there. That's a gamer.

Hey, Clint Mathis! Remember when he was good? I can't be too hard on him though, pretty sure he was capped in Dos a Cero.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Only part I didn't like was Morales yelling at Beckham as if it was a dirty play. It was a hard challenge and he happened to hit his knee on the side and caught him wrong.

Yeah, MLS should have a good thing going in the PNW in a few years. I'm excited for Philly to join next year, as that will hopefully add to a nice little NE corridor rivalry between DC, Philly, the Red Bulls (opening their new stadium) and even NE.

Yeah, I can already see Philly/RBNY getting dicey. Union hasn't even played a game yet and Empire Supporters Club was already mocking the Sons of Ben as "Daughters of Betsy."

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Is that new DCU stadium ever opening?

I wish.

The old plan was more or less predicated on real estate development, so you can guess how that financing would be faring in this economy.

So, there's apparently some backroom discussions going on, but nothing substantive.

Well, you could see that coming.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Is Keller still available... uh, let me rephrase that. Would Keller still be available for callup to USMNT to back Tim Howard in South Africa if Bob Bradley wasn't a moron? He kinda proved this year that, among other things, he's still Kasey Keller. I realize Tim Howard is the man, but despite his age I'd feel much, much better having Keller as the backup rather than Guzan or Perkins.

EDIT: I guess what I'm asking - he didn't officially retire from internationals like McBride and Reyna after Germany, right?

I'm not sure he played against Mexico, but he did score against South Korea to help us get through to the knockout round.

I'm not sure Kasey ever formally retired from international play.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Los Angeles has an insurmountable 1-0 half time lead.

A modest proposal: Make the nets bigger. :p

Here's another mock draw. There are 500 billion or so of these, so if any two are the same, we should probably play the lottery...

Group A: South Africa, N. Korea, Slovakia, Uruguay
Group B: Argentina, Australia, Paraguay, Greece
Group C: Spain, Honduras, Algeria, Portugal
Group D: Italy, Netherlands, S. Korea, Nigeria
Group E: Brazil, Cameroon, Switzerland, United States
Group F: Germany, Chile, Mexico, Denmark
Group G: France, Ghana, New Zealand, Slovenia
Group H: England, Serbia, Japan, Ivory Coast

There were three teams left but North Korea got the spot in Group A; the US came next.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Semi-humorous that both of these teams are sponsored by snake oil salesmen. :D

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Maybe I'm good luck for RSL, since they scored less than a minute after I turned the game on.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Well, this has been a good MLS game so far. Not the greatest skill level, obviously, but good pace and exciting action - lots of chances. Quite entertaining.
