World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

My morning is somewhat shot because of all the games being frozen out in England. The ESPN 2 and Fox Soccer Channel matches have been called. At least I can enjoy Soccer Saturday online. They should put that show on FSC when the games get called. I know some people will be clammoring for a winter break due to all of the games being called.

Tough game at Emirates... Arsenal and Everton draw at 2. I am convinced Arsenal may never be awarded a penalty ever again. This was a costly draw... Fabregas did not play and it is very clear that when he does not play, Arsenal are just a very good team. When he does play, Arsenal are great. Hopefully this game shows Wenger that he needs another center back (or even another left back to replace Traore (Clichy is still injured... news at 11... sigh). The Pienaar goal was ridiculous... the worst defending of the year for Arsenal. Tough to waste two points at home like this, but it could have been all three (silver lining where you can find it, I guess). :o  :(

Yeah you should go for it.

Of course you should go.

Are you going to Birmingham for a Villa game? I think that is the team you were assigned for the class.

Let me know in advance.

I'll be very interested to hear more about your trip when you get back, Biddco. Sounds like its a lot of fun (even if its really school for you).

Well I would have gone to the Fulham game today but they canceled it. Our class game (where everyone goes to a game) is going to be the West Ham game tomorrow. And if that is canceled then we will go to a Birmingham City game on Tuesday.

And yes I can provide more details of the trip when I'm back. I leave this coming Friday so my trip is over halfway over now.

ManU time and they still can't beat Birmingham even when the ref counted an obvious offside goal by ManU. (Linesman flagged for it.)

Alex needs to shake things up. United looks stagnant. I know he doesn't want to make changes, but something needs to be done. The title is Chelsea's to lose and I hate saying that.

I didn't see the game but it sounds like Donovan did pretty well in his first game for Everton. Anyone see it?

Warning: I don't know that much about soccer.

That said, here's my (mostly uninformed) opinion:

Donovan struck a good corner to set up the first goal. Nicely done, that. He seemed to have good speed and his technical skills were sound if not spectacular. However, it looked like he faltered a bit in the physical game - I saw him get pushed off the ball a few times, and there were one or two deer in the headlights moments where he was frozen waiting for a ball and an Arsenal player just got a shoulder in, pushed him aside, and took the play away from him. Basically, there were times where he looked solid and times where he really earned the "Landycakes" moniker that some of the folks around here use.

I didn't think he played badly - he seemed to do quite well - but he wasn't a standout the way he was in the MLS Cup.

Well, he also hasn't played since the MLS Cup, either. That's a good month and a half since his last game action.

UPL's is by far the most negative review I've read of Donovan's performance.

Most have been almost uniformly complimentary, and figure that to the extent there were hiccups, it was due to only having a handful of practice sessions with his teammates to figure out where one another will be on the pitch and what sorts of runs they'll make.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Things I've read about Landon's performance seemed to agree that he was perhaps a little too cautious, but that's to be expected given that he only just met most of his teammates and started training with them.

I saw the whole game... Donovan did not look out of place and made a few nice passes. His delivery from the corner kicks were probably his best asset. They always gave Everton a chance as they were usually perfectly placed into the box, and they scored their first goal off of one.

I would say he had more than a passable grade.. I would give him a 7 out of 10.

ACN first game:

Angola 4
Mali 4

Angola lead 4-0, 80'.

Call me if someone fires an RPG.

Having to wear a bullet proof vest to a soccer match is beyond stupid. I'm hoping Togo does play because they do have some good players, but I hope they are safe. Adebayor may play for the scum side... err.. blue side of Manchester, but he's a heck of a talent.
