Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Now that qualification is locked up for the US:

*The USSF had been quietly working on a friendly for the national team in Europe this fall but needed to wait until its squad (as well as the opponent) qualified for the World Cup before finalizing the deal. Now it's set: USA vs. Denmark in Aarhus on Nov. 18 -- an international fixture date that includes the second leg of Cup playoffs for Europe and CONCACAF-CONMEBOL.

And it doesn't look like Jay DeMerit's eye is getting better anytime soon...

Watford will take at least 10 days before deciding whether captain Jay DeMerit will have an operation on his eye problem.

This is not good:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=685080&sec=us&cc=5901

The injuries are not live threatening, but one woman lost her life in the crash. The GW parkway is a notoriously difficult road to navigate and there is serious construction in the area. Charlie Davies is not in life threatening condition, but obviously will likely not be seeing the field for some time. Hopefully everything for him and the other passenger works out and condolences to the family who lost a loved one.

Uh oh.

Was that the same crash as this one?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/13/AR2009101300297.html?hpid=newswell

The George Washington Memorial Parkway's southbound lanes were closed at Memorial Bridge for several hours early Tuesday because of a fatal accident overnight, authorities said.

Sgt. David Schlosser, a U.S. Park Police spokesman, said three people were inside the vehicle that crashed into a metal guard rail that lines the parkway where it crosses over Boundary Channel.

One of the three was pronounced dead immediately after the 3:15 a.m. collision, and the two others were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

"The car was pretty much split in half," Schlosser said. The southbound lanes of the parkway, a major commuter artery, were closed until 8:15 a.m., with significant backups reported.

The crash happened at 3 in the morning. Any car that would be "pretty much split in half" would have to be traveling waaaaay too fast for any road condition...

That seems to be the consensus. I won't speculate about why they were going overly fast, but the images look frightening. I hope he can resume his career, but who knows. Thats not a crash u walk away from with a bruise or two.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

This is awful. Glad to hear that Davies is "OKAY", but that car was utterly DESTROYED, and my heart goes out to the family of the 22 year old woman who was killed :(

There was a fatality in the accident, said U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe. He added that Davies was in stable condition and that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

No other U.S. players were in the car. The U.S. team, which qualified for the 2010 World Cup on Saturday in Honduras, is in Washington, D.C., for its final qualifier on Wednesday night against Costa Rica.

Charlie Davies, a starter for the U.S. national soccer team, underwent several hours of surgery for non-life threatening injuries suffered in a fatal auto accident early Tuesday on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the U.S. Soccer Federation said.

Details of the surgery were not made available, but a USSF spokesman said the injuries were "possibly" career-threatening.

Yikes.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Grant Wahl's twitter (http://twitter.com/GrantWahl) is updating this story.

Apparently USSF retracted the "career ending" statement.

But he also added, "Charlie Davies' father, brother and sister are en route to Washington hospital. No reports yet that Davies has left surgery."

My questions are: if this accident happened at 3:15 a.m., why is this story only breaking this afternoon? Why did he go into surgery so late? Why is his family just now en route to the hospital?

The story, locally, about the accident itself broke a long time ago. It snarled DC's rush hour.

I'm guessing the identities of those involved weren't released until this afternoon. As Goff's blog notes, the US Soccer folks he went to cover didn't realize Davies was involved until he didn't show up.

Makes sense, its not like the guys on the USA National Team are household names.

Incidentally, I believe I read that Grant Wahl got mugged while in Honduras and then received a personal apology from the president of the country. (It may have been a different writer though.)

Or a different president.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

GrantWahl USSF on Charlie Davies: fractures to right tibia/femur, left elbow, facial fractures. Lacerated bladder
GrantWahl Davies hospitalized at least 1 week. Added surgery will be required for left elbow, possibly facial fractures.

GrantWahl USSF: Titanium rods inserted in Charlie Davies' right femur/tibia.

GrantWahl USSF doc: Davies' injuries usually require 6-12 months recovery & long rehab. Due to CD fitness, chance to play hi level again improved.

GrantWahl's twitter page the last 25-30 minutes.

Seems like his odds of playing in South Africa next summer are vanishingly slim, though. Really disappointing from the sporting point of view, though the fact that he survived while another person didn't puts this in perspective.

And from a Fulham fan's perspective, this is sadly reminiscent of stories I've read of similar accidents that severely hampered the career of Johnny Haynes, keeping him out of England's 1966 team after he had been named captain a few years beforehand, and ended the playing career of Chris Coleman. I hope Davies is able to make a full recovery, and I know he's got modern medicine on his side, but I'm scared that he might not.

Sounds like young Charlie is lucky to be alive, yet alone have a chance to ever play again at a high level.
