Heck of a first day so far with US/Slovakia as the night cap. Sweden beat Russia 6-3, Canada trailed 3-1 in the first to Czechia, but scored 5 straight to win 6-3.

Finland beat Germany 3-1.

Slovakia looks very very skilled early against the US. What a brutal group US drew this year even after winning the tournament last year.

The brackets are pre-determined based on last years final standings.

I know they are. Rarely does the group with 3 of the power 5 end up being the team that won the previous year. Add in the best Slovakia age group in an decade or two, it’s just crazy that even when the US wins, they still end up in the tougher group.

Canada killed Russia in the exhibitions while the US was beaten by Russia in the same lead up games. I think Canada takes it this year.

Disappointing.

So, with Belarus already being promoted, and no relegation this year ( I believe that I heard that, and it was stated as a reason why Austria was playing with so many young players - to get experience for next year) - does anyone know what the format will be next year (I haven't been able to find anything)? 11 Teams would make things difficult. I'd be all for enlarging the field permanently to 12. I know that Austria didn't look that good; but, they were playing with a lot of younger guys, and we seem to be rotating between mostly the same 4-5 teams bouncing up and down anyway (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Austria, Denmark). I say go to 12 and possibly relegate 2.

Dude, the body isn't even cold yet.

I did read somewhere (can't find the link right now), but there were some talks at trying to pick up where they left off in June or July.
