World Junior Championships -- 2021

Trevor Zegras MVP was awarded the MVP and tied for all-time points leader at the WJT. If he had decided to stay at BU he wouldn't have been at the tournament.. What a strange and twisted world we live in right now.

USA!

Going back to the Beanpot reference, Zegras's tuck-in at the near post for the second goal was eerily (for me) reminiscent of the goal he scored with 1.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the last championship game.

Apparently, nobody on this board knows (or cares?) that that the US upset Canada 2-0 last night to win the World Junior Championship. Aside from the medals, banners, and stats, the most compelling subtext was the fact that this game was a showdown between NCAA and Canadian major junior hockey, what with all but four US players and the entire coaching staff coming from college hockey while all but three Canadian players and the entire coaching staff came from major junior.

I care. It was outstanding. As a bonus, I found a feed ( I don't have NHL Network ) and was able to play it through a laptop onto my 7'x4' projector screen. That and a fridge full of Hamms! Wheeeee!

There is a WJC thread in Cafe where it was discussed, and also was the subject of a ton of discussion in Grand Unified Election thread as people were watching the game and following the Georgia runoff elections.

And I rearranged my family room furniture so I could sit 5' away from my 80" TV. This was for ALL of the USA games. IMHU there is no more exciting hockey played anywhere, anytime.

Thanks but that forum is off-limits for me. I come here for hockey. Not politics and the adolescent imbecilic insult hurling that goes along with it.

No doubt. I feel a little sorry for you though, as I see no mention of Hamms.:);)

I watched the knockout round games. I think the lack of attention here is a general reflection of lower amount of posting activity in general due to a late-arriving, haphazard, and surreal hockey season. I think some of us have tuned out of this site because the only news to post about is stuff like "what players are transferring because the season was cancelled."

What a huge upset win for the US. My hope going in was that they would keep it respectable. To actually win is amazing. The team came together well - credit to the coaches and staff. I finally saw what the hype for Sanderson was all about. His defense in the third period was incredible. No speedy Canadian forwards could get past him, and he was very good with his stick. And Beniers is a stud in the making. My favorite all-around forward to watch. I obviously love Zegras, but his line was clearly not being used when we needed to prevent a goal more than score one. But he sure made a name for himself in this tournament.

I did get a little annoyed with Dave Starman's infatuation with Turcotte and Caulfield. At least Turcotte started to justify it over the last three games. I hope Caulfield has a great NHL career, but for a guy that is known first and foremost for being a sniper, he sure missed a lot of nets from the slot last night.

And I have to give props to the BC contingent - obviously Knight was huge with three shutouts after a rough first game. Boldy was very strong on the puck and played well in all zones. Helleson looked good too.

Reports from unofficial Northeastern sources claim that WJC Canada goalie Devon Levi suffered a fractured rib vs Germany on Dec 26 although some Canadian sources say it is "only" cracked, not fractured. Which means Levi apparently played through pain to to tie the WJC shutout record (3). Levi has yet to play an NCAA game so sounds like a good case for a medical redshirt.

Didn't the NCAA rule everyone gets a redshirt this year, whether they play or not?

Alex Newhook also got hurt in the WJC and played through it. He is now out for the weekend again. Thank you team Canada. Maybe Mel Pearson had the right idea!

Just wanted to mention I was told yesterday that coach "Killer" Miller will be back behind the bench fulfilling his usual role at the next World Juniors.
I didn't want to start a new thread so early just to say that.
