Wordle

Mastermind was brilliant.

I used the board to keep track of medals in the Olympics. It was fun designing unique color combos for flags (the Slavic nations are a PITA).

I still remember Brazil was GGYGG.

Dx are you not trying to use all the vowels in the first 2 turns? You should have more yellow/green by turn 3. Better than guessing the word, is working out strategy.

202 5/6 That was fun. Took me a while to figure out what was going on. And I love the interface.

I play by the "hard" rules. You have to follow the guidance from prior guesses.

I also think of vowels as wasted guesses. Y__ c_n f_g_r_ __t _v_ry w_rd _n _ s_nt_nc_ _f y__ r_m_v_ _ll v_w_ls f__rly q__ckly. _o__o_a___, _o_ _o _u__. (Consonants not so much.)

The only question I haven't worked out is whether you should guess a word with an S in the last position or any other position. It's one or the other. I'm guessing 50-75% of all words with an S have an S at the end. So is it better to guess an S in another position hoping you hit the Battleship on the first guess or do you guess something with the highest chance of being correct? Which tells you more information?

I'm not sure what you mean by hard rules. I don't ignore my previous guesses. If i get a hit, i will continue to use it going forward. But, i will add more vowels until i've covered them all. I don't put in non-words (unless by accident or typo). Since the first word is free, i maximize the vowels and common consonants.

I'd guess that most 6 letter words have at least 2 vowels (including y), and knowing them makes guessing the consonants easier. So, if i am getting at least 33% of the letters in 2 guesses, i am right on pace to finish in 6 tries.

I usually do rotate through the vowels if I don't get hits. Today was just several in a row.

"LOUSY" would be a great first word. Eliminate less common vowels (assuming A,E are most common), and find out if Y or S is in the word.

Decided to dig into this at lunch.

Using the scrabble dictionary, each of these letters represent the most frequent letters at each position for all five-letter words.
  1. The most common letter is S @52% of all characters. The 5th position is the most common for S @ 59.9% of words with >1 S (which answers my question earlier about words w/ S)
  2. The 2nd is E @ 51.3%. The 4th position is the most common @ 38.1%
  3. A is 3rd @ 44.8%. 2nd position is most common @ 46.4%
  4. O is 4th @ 33.4%, however, it's most common position is 2 at 46.4%. The next most is is 3rd @ 23.4% which is good for 9th overall in letters. So let's save this.
  5. R is 5th @ 32.6%, most common is 3rd position @ 28.1%
  6. I is 6th @ 29.5%. Most common is 2nd, again. Of words with I, 2nd position is 37.9% and 3rd is 28.9%, both lower than the letters above in those position. 4th position is at 22.8%, so hold that for now.
  7. L is 7th @ 27.4%, 3rd is most common at 25%, then 4th @ 22.3%, and 2nd @ 21.2%. All lower.
  8. T is 8th @ 26.0%, most common is 4th @ 27.6%. 1st is next at 24.5%, so possibly a good choice here, and 5th is next @ 21.2%.
  9. N is 9th @ 22.7%, most common is 3rd @ 32.3%. Next is 4th at 26.3%, then 5th at 18.8%
  10. D is 10th @ 19.4%, 5th @ 34.5%, 1st @ 27.0%, 4th @ 18.5%
  11. U is 11th @ 19.0%, 2nd @ 48.2%, 3rd @ 26.9%, 4th @ 15.7%
  12. C is 12th @ 16.6%, 1st @ 46.0%, 4th @ 19.7%, 3rd @ 19.3%

If we look at the most common letters at each position across all words,
1st Position:
  1. S @ 12.1% of ALL words
  2. C @ 7.6%
  3. B @ 6.9%
2nd Position:
  1. A @ 17.2%
  2. O @ 15.5%
  3. E @ 12.4%
3rd Position:
  1. A @ 9.7%
  2. R @ 9.2%
  3. I @ 8.5%
4th Position:
  1. E @ 19.6% (again, of all words)
  2. A @ 7.8%
  3. T @ 7.2%
5th Position:
  1. S @ 31.2%!!
  2. E @ 10.6%
  3. Y @ 10.5%
So, do you guess AROSE which would include S @ 52.0% of all characters, E @ 51.3%, A @ 44.8%, O @ 33.4%, and R @ 32.6%?

Or do you guess TERNS/STERN/RENTS/NERTS which has the most frequent consonants and the most frequent vowel? --> Best combo here is RENTS because it's the largest sum of frequencies for each letter at each position.

Or do you guess CARES which has the most common letter for each position if they are in the word?

Not sure. Most likely this isn't the right way to analyze. The best is probably finding out which is the combo of including and excluding. Maybe one letter eliminates another (think Q & U).

But I'm sticking with #2 :-)
