Women’s North American Pro Hockey

Bauer (Montreal) defeats Sonnet (Toronto) 3-2.

Play of the night was Poulin stealing the puck from Thompson on the blue line, getting herself a breakaway and scoring short handed. Also had an assist on the night.

Enjoyed watching Isbell and Howard tonight as well. made me miss the old CWHL.

Bauer (Montreal) defeated ScotiaBank (Calgary) 6-1 yesterday. Game was 3-1 halfway through the third and then the wheels fell off for Calgary. Some takeaways:

1- Montreal had to be the favorite from the outset with 9 centralized players to Calgary’s 4. Plus Mtreal having a healthy Poulin and goalies Maschmeyer, Desbiens, and LaCasse is going to give them an edge.

2- Montreal has been training together for several months whereas the other two teams have not been able to. From what I gather this is because the Montreal players train at Centre 21.02, a training center organized by Daniele Sauvageau. She worked to get the center recognized/endorsed by Hockey Canada. In Pandemic times that meant they were able to get a high performance athlete exemption and train together, that the PW could not get its players in other areas. This is an example of why Hockey Canada is needed as a partner in the future pro league. And unfortunate that they couldn’t get it done somehow for the Toronto/Calgary women this year.

3- Goal scorers (12 goals) so far have all been Hockey Canada program top 40ish players with the exception of one: Karell Emard (SLU alum) scored a nice goal yesterday when she snuck down from the point, and then drove to the net to get in front of a D. Ann-Sophie Bettez fed her the puck from behind the net and Emard drove it home. Really nice to see. Ann-Sophie Bettez has 4 points in 2 games, second only to Poulin’s 5.

4- Poulin looks great. This is of course not international hockey, and definitely not Canada USA. But Canadians and hockey fans in general should be encouraged. She’s winning faceoffs, blocking shots, scoring, doing it all per usual. Yesterday she led off the scoring on a feed from Bettez, scoring top shelf glove side just like her goal the day before.

5- Calgary Toronto play this afternoon. I assume Kristen Campbell will get the start for Calgary. Campbell is on pace to go to the Olympics, making her senior team debut. We haven’t really seen her since she helped Wisc win the 2019 NCAA’s so she is one to watch today.

6- The games all stream free on pw YouTube , @digdeepbsb on Twitter is providing nice coverage.gifs/stats etc

It’s enjoyable to watch. The commentary could be a little better, and more tv/computer graphics could be used. And they should think of calling these teams by the city they are from instead of Team Sonnet, etc. I understand it’s a sponsorship thing but it sounds cheesy. Go with the Toronto Sonnet, the Montreal Bauer, the Calgary SB or something like that

I LOVE watching it, just putting it on in the background like my husband does so often do with golf and baseball (and I don’t follow) is so refreshing. How did no one think of calling it Toronto Sonnet, etc. lol. My husband said the same thing. makes a ton of sense... things probably went sideways with the first team: the New Hampshire Women’s Sports Foundation. Kind of a mouthful.

In Canada do you watch on PW YouTube or Sportsnet app?

For the last 3 games, played at Saddledome I’m pretty sure it’s on tv and team is Leah Hextall and Cassie Campbell on the call. Blake Bolden and Caroline Ouellette on the panel, and Jeff Marek and Caroline Cameron at desk. So, that should be cool. I do enjoy listening to Lori Dupuis and Jayna Hefford between periods (in previous tourneys)but maybe they will return for Worlds. Campbell’s insight should be interesting considering she’s a management consultant to Hockey Canada, so presumably has watched these gals a ton. Crossing my fingers this part of the production streams to the US.

Brittany Howard (RMU alum) on hat trick watch in Calgary. Kristen Richards (RMU alum) also with an assist so far. Crazy game 6-2 Sonnets in the second.

Brittany Howard got the hat trick, finishing off a four on one (omg) for The Sonnets..
https://twitter.com/PWHPA/status/1397677806406995973?s=20

Goalies were Kassidy Sauve (Scotiabank) and Amanda Makela (Sonnet). Final score was 8-3 Sonnets.

Not much to say about this one, other than that it presumably loads up Sonnet with confidence before they take round 2 against Bauer.

Goal scorers were: Potomak, Turnbull and Mikkelson; Howard(3), Rattray (2), Gabel, Field, Bach

The Toronto Sonnets beat the Montreal Bauer’s yesterday. Way to go Sonnets. 14 penalties were called, CHA vibes all day.

Todays game at Saddledome is Montreal vs Calgary and starts at 330 Est on a Friday. Again with the college hockey vibes. :-)

It’s the real Sportsnet crew calling the game
etc so that will be super fun. I was wrong
the other day about Campbell starting for Calgary but surely today is her day.

short turn around for Montreal who are in game 4 in 4 days. They’ve been double shifting Poulin which is fun of course but necessary? Not sure; we shall see how she holds up.

BTM Partners, which already owns the Toronto Six and Boston Pride, have acquired the Metropolitan Riveters from the league.

In roster moves:

- Buffalo has re-signed G Carly Jackson and F Cassidy MacPherson.
- The CT Whale have made their first re-signing, bringing back 2020 leading scorer Alyssa Wohlfeiler.
- The Toronto Six have re-signed defender Emma Greco.

.

John Boynton is one of the most intriguing people in the women’s pro hockey scene right now, imo. Correct me if I have any of this wrong but I think he owns Firehouse Capital, which presumably raises money and then invests in startups. Their site lists an investment in BTM which of course you referenced above.

From a sustainability standpoint, is it good to have one person own so much of the league? On the one hand if he loses ability or interest, does the league have ability to absorb the teams back without cutting salaries? On the other hand perhaps realistically in women’s pro hockey, it’s still a year to year thing and a person is just grateful BTM is paying the bills in year 7.

Looking at his bio, one gets the sense he is devoted to women’s sport which is a positive. Numerous examples but one that stood out to me is Firehouse Capital’s investment in Sports Innovation Lab, a start up founded by Angela Ruggiero.

So for the benefit of the sport I hope he’s invested for at least as long as is necessary. Much is made of Secret, Discover etc support but with 3 teams BTM is presumably in excess of a million annual investment.

Re the Riveters purchase - I must take issue with Boynton saying Rivs are one of the most iconic brands in women’s pro sports. No way! Cool logo, but in women’s pro hockey the most iconic brand is the Minnesota Whitecaps all day every day. Best origin story, longevity, winningest (champs in 3 leagues? I think), made a profit apparently first year in NW, nicest jerseys in the league. No pressure NW, but don’t mess this brand up. ;-) ...and the Rivs might be iconic one day. Get to work BTM, lol.

Scott - Do you have a fave NW team?

Link to goal highlights of Bauer’s 4-3 win yesterday. Great game, exactly what you would want in a televised game. Game winner went to Jessie Eldridge who is having a great tourney, 5 points in 4 games, good for a tie in second place of all Canadian skaters, with Victoria Bach.

Sarah Potomak is another one that’s all over the ice, looks great.

Poulin leads the point race with 8 points inn4 games. Line mate Bettez got injured in game 3 so they shuffled the lines, no lost step for Poulin.

The production was awesome. Another game at 1 pm on tv today, streams everywhere. Yesterday had a pregame show; hoping same today so Pregame with Marek and Ouellette maybe at 1230.

Sonnets vs Scotiabankers, I wouldn’t mind seeing SB win but with Sonnets d core including 5 former Olympians or centralized players, good luck to SB.

2-1 Scotiabankers in the third. Turnbull looks amazing this tourney. Super promising for Canada.

Johnson and Potomak also looking good.

I admit that I tend to support whoever has the most SUNY Plattsburgh alumni on the ice ;), so most of the last couple of seasons that has been the Whale, though I do have a bunch of Buffalo gear now. My closest team would be the Riveters, who at one point played at Aviator is which is only a couple of miles down the road from me. Now they're all the way in NJ :(

Gotcha. I’m similar. Planned on cheering for the Scotiabankers today, but then Amanda Makela (Hurst alum) got the start for the Sonnets and I was conflicted. Sonnets also have a Plattsburgh alum who was profiled today - Shannon Stuart, a 2x national champ.

As for NW, I try to cheer for the Six but we’ll see how it goes in the long run.

Final in PW action today was 3-2 SB over Sonnet. 2 goals for Potomak, 37 saves for Kristen Campbell. Potomak led the round Robin with 5 goals. These games have been fantastic from a hockey stand point and a production standpoint. any women’s hockey fan would enjoy. Pregame at 4 est on Sunday for championship.

Production continues to be great, top to bottom, nice job by Sportsnet and the talent.

This was today’s intro: minute forty five, fantastic. Super fun and I spy a couple college jerseys in here of the ladies who never got a chance to be in the CW:

I remember Shannon Stewart well, she was a freshman my senior year. Never led the team in scoring but carved out a great career, and was fourth in career points at the time she ended her Cardinal career. Also a big part of the foundation that started the dynasty the team currently has going.

Yesterday’s game winner from Poulin. Great play throughout by Montreal on this. Starts with whoever gets the puck in the neutral zone and finds Poulin on the blue line. Poulin is a bit like Crosby, can’t seem to give her a bad pass.

As soon as Poulin fed Saulnier coming through with speed I thought it was game over, as Saulnier and Eldridge went in 2 on 1. Saulnier on her off wing brings the puck to her forehand and passes to Eldridge. A diving Howard (I think) can’t get to Eldridge who one times it, Tiley with the save. Eldridge collected her own rebound from the corner, Rattray is pressuring her. Jenner and a D are both with Saulnier in front of the net while Poulin glides in undefended and one times a feed from Eldridge into the back. Beautiful goal. That 2 minute rest in the penalty box was probably a gift to her.

Poulin led the tourney in pts with 11, tied for first in goals with Potomak with 5. Eldridge second in points with 7.

As an aside,
Saulnier, described as an energy player by Ouellette, had some great passes off of odd person rushes this tourney. Earlier in the tourneyshe had one coming down her strong side, her the D and her teammate all bunched up. Saulnier did a little snow plow thing to create some space, get the puck across to her teammate, shot, rebound and Inthink O’Neill then banged it in. Fun to watch.

Turnbull and Johnston were in some ways the most fun duo to watch this tourney. Calgary had a big challenge in terms of roster depth and lack of practice time. They had one bad game, and also ran out of gas last 7 mins their first game. But they never quit and that last game got a very hard fought win. Johnson and Turnbull led the way and played so unselfishly with each other. Wonder if they are an option together in future Canada games. I’ve been critical of Johnson because for the amount of minutes she gets I don’t think she produces enough against the US, but she was awesome this tourney and I hope that carries to Worlds.

Gabel and Spooner were another duo that played together. Gabel was almost treated like a 7th forward on this roster when it came to pp, and last minute of the game scenarios. So, she has her work cut out for her. She played fine this tourney, Goal and assist, but I would have liked to see her and Spooner trust each other a little more, and work off of each other, rather than just rush down the ice and try to snipe top shelf, which they did numerous times. Almost like there was competition between them.

This was an amazing tourney - not enough time to do justice to all the goodness in it. Last word for now has to go to Sam Isbell who played for Montreal. They played her at D, they played her at forward, mixed up the lines and centers etc. She appeared to roll with all of it, always had good body language on the bench etc. she got better throughout the tourney and yesterday was her best game. Huge shift halfway through the 2nd, leading to Montreal’s 2nd goal. All the non national team players represented themselves so well throughout this tourney. When the PW started, they talked about wanting to improve opportunities for the non national team players. I hope the PW embraces that vision as they work through season 3.

More signings in the NWHL:

The Buffalo Beauts re-sign F Erin Gehen (SUNY Buffalo State '18) and G Caty Flagg (UMass-Boston '20). Gehen was recently named Associate AD at DIII women's hockey powerhouse Elmira College where she will focus on financial administration for the department. Gehen was a volunteer assistant for the WIH team for the last three seasons and an accountant for the Elmira College admin (as opposed to working under Athletics).

The Connecticut Whale have signed D Allie Munroe (Syracuse '19) and F Kennedy Marchment (St. Lawrence '18), who both spent their previous few seasons in Sweden and re-signed G Abby Ives (Quinnipiac '20).

The Toronto Six have re-signed G Elaine Chuli (UConn '16).

Allie Munroe was at the Canada selection camp in April as well as a former PW. Couple of good signings for Connecticut.
