Really??!!
Can anyone add info about this Showcase? Any one division better to watch than another? Worthwhile event?

It's a lot of fun and last year the college division featured a lot of the top players from New England teams -- Jillian Dempsey from Harvard, Skarupa / Field / Carpenter / Burns from BC, Pelkey from Vermont, others that I'm forgetting. The games are not just in Marlborough but all over the place; for example, last year we caught some round robin games at Valley Sports in West Concord, though the playoffs seemed to be centralized in Marlborough. Round robin games are two 23-minute periods, playoff games are one 30-minute period, and the schedule is kept very rigidly, so if you want to get to see particular players, make sure you're there ten minutes before time. Free admission for spectators. The rosters were posted early the week of the tournament, as I remember, so look for them on Monday and see if there are any players you particularly want to see. The games were streamed live on FastHockey but the quality wasn't great -- one camera, reasonable camerawork, but no commentary other than arena sounds. Confusingly, for the final, both teams were supposed to be in the same colors, so the lower seed wore vests *which had different numbers on them*, meaning you basically had to recognise faces to see who had the puck.

So, a lot of fun, but be clear that it's organized for the players and the spectators are incidental.

Thanks! Sounds like Kelly runs a tight ship. Looking forward to it.

This not being an Olympic year, expect a few more of the top caliber players to attend in the college division, just like two years ago.

BTW for those who have not seen it, Spooner and Mikkelson from Team Canada are participating the Canadian version of "The Amazing Race". They won both the first and the second leg. Canadian version of TAR airs over the summer months, it is on CTV.

Even last year was great -- in addition to the ones named above, there were Pankowski, Pucci, Lefort, Kohanchuk, Kelly Babstock, Erin Ambrose, Kate Buesser, Hilary Knight... should be a good show.

If anyone's looking for me there, I'm the dad with the 8yo daughter in either a Skarupa jersey or (if we get it made in time) a Field / C t-shirt...

Will be there taking in the games. Comparing the competition and where things fit in.

You are already on the watch list for Hockey Mom Hall of Fame consideration!

Rosters are up: http://beantownclassic.com/contents/women’s-beantown-classic/rosters/

Teams to look out for include The Jets (BC: Leary, Trivigno, Wasylk, Field, Skarupa + Paige Savage, Amanda Pelkey, Heather Mottau); NAHA (a huge roster including Ali and Annie Pankowski, Toni Ann Miano, Hannah Bramm and a load more BC players); NA Whip Selects (Blake Bolden, Monique Lamoureux (!), Meghan Duggan (!!), Hilary Knight (!!!), Kacey Bellamy, Marie Philip Poulin, Jess Koizumi); Team Celine (Harvard, including Fry and Picard from the Olympic team, along with Jillian Dempsey, Miye D'Oench, etc). I'll be there for the finals, may well make it down on Friday or Saturday too.

Re: Women's Beantown Classic

Ongoing results for the college division are at http://www.teampages.com/leagues/5520, though at the time of writing they haven't been updated with the last games of the day.

I got to the last two sessions today. Earlier, the Jets (BC + Pelkey / Savage / Mottau / Ott) beat Team Celine (Harvard including Dempsey + Olympians) 4-1, which was a much bigger win than I would have predicted and hopefully a good omen for the season. This evening, the Jets beat Lady Cornwalls Colts 7-1 -- and since the Colts are basically Plattsburgh, the Minnesota of D3, this was a potential gotcha game, but the Jets brought a ton of intensity to it and Skarupa was at her fluid, enthralling best. Paige Savage was very impressive in that game: she's got size and skill to spare. Meanwhile, Team Celine beat the Seahawks, basically Salve Regina, 14(!)-0 in a game where they literally turned off the scoreboard with five minutes to go. Lyndsey Fry (playing D/F) was probably the standout in that.

In the second session, the Whips (MLam / Knight / Koizumi / Bellamy / Duggan, though I didn't actually see her play) were 4-0 up on the Dawgs (basically Yale) by the time it got too late for an eight-year-old to pay attention, and NAHA, with late addition to the roster Sarah Lefort, were 2-0 up on Pro Tips, a mainly D-1 scratch team. I thought the Whips were a little low energy but they were getting the job done.

Big game tomorrow at 2, Whips v Jets.

Re: Women's Beantown Classic

A few things I thought of while in Marlboro for the Beantown. 1. Some coaches are better at selling Kids than others. Some of them were really making a great effort 2. Get your daughter with a coach who is connected. 3. If a forward, get on the best possible line. 4. Players from New England Preps have an advantage because they are a year older but are in the same grade as other players (yes, I know some Prep Kids don't repeat a grade) 5. After the top 5% of players (& I would not put all of the USA U18 Players here) #1-3 really apply.

I watched WHIP play the BC team (don't recall their name) and that is about as good as it gets for summer hockey! Very nice crowd for that game :)

Re: Women's Beantown Classic

Great article about the Whips / Jets game by Kat Hasenauer Cornetta here: http://www.womenshockeytoday.com/beantown-classic-college-division/

The Whips won the whole thing of course, only the Jets came close to giving them trouble. I was very impressed by Kali Flanagan in all the Jets games I saw, a very fast and mobile D who can cover for other people's mistakes and get the puck to the safe side of the ice. She even took some minutes on the PK for the Jets in the second game. It's hard to imagine any Hockey East play being much tougher. She'll be great for the Eagles.

There was a *lot* of physical play aimed at Marie-Philip Poulin and Hilary Knight, which frankly was mainly showing off, and also was very entertaining to watch.
