Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you

While we're having fun, we can try to project the DMen. I think Smith, Goloubef, and McDonaugh are surely gone so I will plan accordingly.

Gardiner - Little
Ramage - Springer
Schulz - Johnson

I don't know much about Drake or Simonelli, but I would think that they could easily beat out Springer or Johnson if they know their head from their *** because neither are world beaters. If any of Smith, Goloubef or McD decide to stay, that would be a huge, but I'm not counting on it.

I think if a third d-man bolts (Goulobef), Hasketh will be brought in a year early. And I would be shocked if Simonelli was not in the top six.

By the way, why is the consensus that Turnbull is a lock next year for the lineup? I think Mersch has got as good a chance as Turnbull, Dolan or Thurber.

I doubt they bring in Hesketh if we lose 3. We have 9 defensemen this year which is on the heavy side. Most teams would like to carry 8 defensemen. And you are correct, Simonelli will be in the lineup next season.

Gardiner-Ramage
Schultz-Simonelli
Johnson-Springer
Little-Drake

Chuck, I'd tend to agree with you on the d-pairings. I'm not so sure Goloubef leaves though...

In regard to Jason Clark that sounds like a great late pick-up ala Ramage from this season.

love it. and thanks so much for keeping that noalibisnoregrets blog going strong. You have no idea how great that's been for us fans who don't always get to keep up on recruiting news.

Wouldn't it be better to spread out Gardiner and Ramage? Having Johnson-Springer on a line would be asking for trouble IMO.

I agree on Goloubef. I'd say the chances of McD returning are 0%, Smith 10%, Goloubef 50/50. Gardiner probably 70/30, never know w/ a 1st round pick, though I think he still has a lot to learn before turning pro.

I'm hoping that Eaves is starting to learn that good talents are sitting out there late, and that recruiting 10 guys way ahead of time hoping they turn out, is often enough a foolish venture. No doubt that lining up McCabe, Hesketh, etc is as important. Ramage, now Clark, kids develop at different times (or wait to commit), and I'd love to see some late bloomers, whether its turning 17 or 20 when they bloom, who are uncommitted be brought in. Eaves has a tough job, no doubt, but diversifying his recruiting strategy can only help the Badgers.

Chuck,

Isn't there something atypical about Hesketh's draft status that Edmonton will lose his draft rights unless they sign him within 3 years (the end of his sophomore year if he doesnt arrive until 2011)? Maybe its the end of his junior year if he doesnt arrive until 2011?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you

Springer in any D-pairing is asking for trouble, in my opinion. I have much more confidence in Johnson.

To be fair, Springer will be a Jr and one would assume he's improved from his freshman year (what your comments are based on?) as most of the lads have.

That's true. I think he's only played in a couple of games this year, but it seems like whenever he is on the ice there is an opposing player skating free in our zone. He obviously has some skill, or he wouldn't be here, but with Johnson on the ice I feel less likely to see him out of position or making a bad decision.

Chuck can correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as Hesketh is signed up for the 2011/12 season, the Oilers don't lose his rights, and then get 4 years from his beginning of school to sign him. If you remember Chris Hickey, he had to come in because the Wild would lose his rights (he was drafted in 2006 so he had to start school by the 2008/09 season).

You are correct Gandalf.

Sounds like the Gophers are going to get a commitment from Canadian goalie Joel Vienneau soon. He visited campus last weekend. Should be interesting to see what they do as Kangas is a junior and Patterson is a Sophomore.

Still no word on future goalies for the Badgers. I get more and more worried by the day. I would assume that the staff is taking a very cautious approach to recruiting goaltenders after securing an extremely early commitment from Crandall only to have him completely fall flat on his face in the USHL.

The later and later it gets the more and more I think we're going to wait until 2011 to bring someone in.

I'm not really concerned about starting a freshman in goal, but not having a veteran with at least a little D1 experience as a backup is a bit more worrisome.

Not to dwell, but by not even looking at Madison's Mike Johnson, freshman at Notre Dame, it's going to bite us in the butt. :(

The fact no one is in the offing is un-nerving. I hope there's some Canadian jewels out there waiting to be found. Looking back at Eaves' goalies, he seems to have a good eye for them; Cons was probably the "worst" one he signed and he wasn't bt any means a huge miss, just a slight one. Even that Broduer kid has made it all the way to the NHL. Of course Crandall was a swing and a miss.

Johnson would have been a Jr with 2 years of understudying what have turned out to be 2 very very good goalies and have had 2 years tutilage under Sanger, whose importance cannot be understated, considering UW went into this year with ???? abounding between the pipes.

Ding, Ding, Ding.

From talking to Mike, he made it very clear that Wisconsin never even talked to him. How is it possible to have a goaltender with that talent level, from Madison, and not even give him a call to see what his plans are? Regardless of him having an outstanding season for Notre Dame we should have at least kept tabs on him.

What about Matt Mahalek out of the USHL? I've heard things across the spectrum - from MJ all the way to attending an Ivy.

Interesting name. Not having an outstanding season but he's real young and playing on a bad team. Could be a kid to keep an eye out for thanks Bothman.

Anybody know offhand what the college connections are in the ECHL allstar game tonight?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you?

Is there a good place that lists all of the *HL leagues, and what they are? For example, I stumbled across this link: http://thepuckdoctors.com/2010/01/whl-rookie-scores-one-handed-goal/

I had no idea what the WHL was, so I did research on that one, found out it was part the the CHL, which would make players ineligible for NCAA.

But players in other leagues, such as the BCHL and USHL, are eligible for the NCAA. Then of course you have the NHL development leagues like the AHL.

So is there one place that describes all of the leagues that I can refer to when I see an abbrev.? Or do I have to look up each one when I see it and try to remember what it is?
