Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you

Brad Navin will skip Junior hockey and be a Badger next season. http://www.wissports.net/article.asp?pageID=1&newsID=21531&sportID=5

The University of Wisconsin currently has three players who made the jump directly from high school hockey in Minnesota, but none at this time that have come directly from Wisconsin high school hockey without playing Junior hockey (and none that come to mind that have done it previously).

Um, Mark Johnson comes to mind.

John Byce, Dennis Snedden?

I screwed that up! I was thinking "in recent memory" but that apparently did not make it's way from my mind to my fingers and into the article!

I'm sure there were lots of players before Juniors became so prevalent, but not sure if there have been any recently. The only Wisconsin player I could think of that has made the jump directly to D1 recently was Ted Behrend who is at Colorado College (without looking, I think he'll be a Senior next year...). He's from the Madison area.

Perhaps I should edit that part of my article!!!

We forgive you.

I'd once again like to make the modest proposal that we do away with the recruiting thread and merge all the recruiting information into this one thread. It seems that we seem to have a number of parallel conversations and it would just be easier to have one thread to check for badger information.

It seems like this topic has been brought up in another thread. ;)

Sounds like Burnsville dman Eddie Wittchow enjoyed his visit Madison. Not ready to make a decision yet.

The OHL draft was this weekend for 1995 born players. 3 players from Wisconsin were selected. Hudson's Ian McCoshen was taken by Saginaw (6th round). Sun Prairie's Will Butcher was taken by Windsor (10th round). And Hudson's Travis Wood was taken by Erie (11th round).

McCoshen plans to play for Waterloo (USHL) next year, and Butcher has signed on with the NTDP. Wood, despite being taken last out of the three is the most likely to play in the OHL and I'm told it's a really good chance that it happens. He's only a freshman in high school right now so he'll likely be back with his HS team next season (Hill Murray in the cities).

Alberta Junior Hockey League forward Reed Linaker from the St. Albert Steel has informed me that he has committed to Penn State for 2012.

Kind of a kick in the balls, if we had room for him in 2012.

I suspect that with 3 forwards already lined up for 2012, and no senior forwards on the roster (Little will be a 4th year player as a RS JR) and one expected early departure (Smith) roster spots are getting a little tight.

Mathew Fosdick-Brookfield HS-Defense
Alec Vanko-Oregon HS-Defense
Kyle Schmidt-Milwaukee Jr. Admirals Midget Major-Forward

1995's
Tyler Funk-(I'm not sure)-Forward

1996's
Ryan Wischow-Ashwaubenon HS-Goalie

Cooper Watson-Appleton HS-Defense (brother? of Ohio State commit Cliff)
Charlie Grasskamp-Eau Claire Memorial-Forward

Nick Schmaltz-Chicago Mission Bantam Major's-Forward (He's listed as Illinois but I'm 99% sure he still lives in Verona. Brother of former UW recruit and current Sioux recruit Jordan Schmaltz)

I don't know why Eaves brought Navin in instead of Linaker.......

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: What are you going to do, when NHL-U, comes calling for you

I agree that Linaker might of had more of an impact then Navin for this season, but they may of not had enough scholarship money going forward if they brought in another recruit with only Smith as Almington mentioned likily leaving after next season.

Cooper Watson is Cliff Watson's brother, they were defensive partners for Appleton United this season. Also, I think you are correct about Nick Schmaltz being Jordan's brother.

I know Nick Schmaltz is Jordan's brother, I'm just not sure why he's listed as Illinois.

NAHL.com is reporting that the Badgers have landed a commitment from Alaska Avalanche goaltender Landon Peterson. Peterson, an Oregon, WI native had a 2.74 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 45 games for Alaska.
