Some of you guys are whacked. As a OSU fan...Here's what OSU has to offer to Zach Stepan:
Great coaching staff - likely will coach world juniors again in the future
Head coach that has likely watched the kid play for several years (because he was an asst coach)
Incredible campus and atomsphere - has everything to offer
Future Big 10 league
New Arena - incredible facility
A butt load of money that is being pumped into the program
Big enough school to chose any major he wants
A likely committment that he will play.
Should I go on...
Yeah, you should because objectively you have proven nothing.
Great staff...Oz is a better coach than Eaves? Yet to be proven. Eaves is a proven guy. Advantage UW.
Eaves watched him play for several years as well, as Oz worked for Eaves and the UW. Push
Incredible campus/atmoshere (hockey). (Campus is a push). 11,000 - 14,000 attendance for UW, 5,000 for OSU. Advantage UW.
Future big 10 team. So is UW and the WCHA is a hell of a lot better than the CCHA. Advantage UW.
New area - incredible facility? Ever been to the Kohl Center? I'll give you a push there.
Boatloads of money - Both schools are in the big ten, Push
Big school - Both schools are in the big ten, Push
Commitment he will play. Like he going to ride the pine @ UW - Push
Final score: Advantage UW: 3, tie: 5, Advantage tOSU: 0
I understand you are excited about your program, and you should be. Oz has the makings of an excellent coach. Chuck or Gurt said tOSU is a sleeping giant, and I would agree. UW isn't a sleeping giant, they are an established giant so don't come hear and try and tell ANYONE tOSU's overall offereings are better than UW's. It's simply not true.
My point about Oz recruiting Zach never was about offerings of a program, it was about him using connections he made on behalf of UW now for another school.

Not bad... but I wasn't ripping on UW - obviously is a great program. My point was that OSU has a lot of offer too (more than hockey). Why would the kid want to go to a school where there are so many other forwards being recruited? I read somewhere that Eaves overrecruited for that year. Maybe he did the math and figured out how many spots would be open. Shouldn't he go where he's going to play? be a rock star? and have the opportunity to have a coach bring him to the next level? If he goes to UW, he fights for playing time... maybe has to go play juniors for a year and doesn't want to... Maybe UW doesn't offer his major. Maybe he's a football fan too...(we have plenty of fans for that) Who knows! My point was... we have plenty to offer top kids. The program will only get better and the fans will start pouring in!
Sounds like Hak pulled an Eaves with Danny Mattson.....Sconi fans must be smiling for once it's not a UW recruit getting promised something that wasn't delivered.![]()
It's not the first time Hakstol has done it. He did it with Matt White and Mike Fink as well. Same with Lucia doing it to Jake Youso and Brandon Martell. Hopefully people have opened their eyes that this is far from solely Wisconsin issue.
I'll give you Mike Fink, but Hakstol didn't do anything like that with Matt White. White gave up hockey completely for awhile...said he didn't want to even think about it...and during that time he dropped his commitment from UND. Then he opened his recruitment back up later that year after he started playing again and ended up at Vermont (not to be confused with the Matt White at UNO).
That said, best of luck to Danny at BSU. He kind of hit a brickwall in the USHL and never really played as well as many thought he would. Very similar situation to Mike Fink...
According to Baggot, UW's recruiting class is unranked, which is unusual for UW. Obviously Rumpel is a gem, but other than him, what to talent evaluators think if these guys? Should we be concerned UW isn't re-loading, according to the Redline report anyway?
D-Hekseth
D-McCabe
F-Pappe
F-Lapic
F-Strang
F-Woods
Losing:

Badgers land Minnesota prep defenseman Patrick Daly
As Baggot pointed out, RLR is looking at where/if a player will be drafted as part of their equation. Rumpel, Paape, Strang, Lapic are all too old. Hesketh is already drafted. Woods has struggled this season, at least I get that feeling looking at the box score. McCabe is a top prospect but not eligible until the 2012 draft. Not sure how high this Patrick Daly kid is on any NHL draft lists, but sounds like a good player and leader. So that Badgers don't have much for the 2011 draft.
I'm not quite as pessimisitc as Chuck, I think this class brings in 3 nice dmen (if Hesketh isn't a bust) and all signs point to a top notch 4 year goalie starter. As for the forwards, I think Strang is undervalued. Paape and Lapic will likely be role players, but Woods has talent, Eaves just needs to maximize that. Maybe Woods could be another Mersch next season, and surprise all of us.
When I look at the 2012 forwards (though I'm a little worried about McGuire) I see a lot of talent and think the 2011 class will fit in nicely IMHO.
My expectations are lower next season due to no seasoned goalie, and a possible hugh fall off (in the short term) on the blue line. 18 or 19 players will be underclassmen next year, I see 2007/08 all over again.
Thanks for the insight, just what I was looking for.
Here's the D roster for next year, assuming Schultz and Gardiner leave:
Drake So.
Faust So.
Little Jr.
Rammage Jr.
Simonelli So.
Springer Sr.
Hekseth Fr.
McCabe Fr.
Daly Fr.
I see your worries at the blue line. Simonelli and Rammer are way above average, Faust has looked good for a Fr., Little will be solid, Springer is scary, the Fr. are not eye poppers, except Daly perhaps. That gives UW 4 guys you can trust, and the 3rd pair is Daly w/Springer. Butters is going to earn is keep next year.
I have no worries in goal - Rumpel is the man.
Was any other school of note after him?
