Brendan Woods Makes UW Commitment Official
Just over a week ago we talked about Chicago Steel forward Brendan Woods and his official visit to the University of Wisconsin. We knew that Wisconsin was looking for 1-2 more forwards for the 2011 season and figured that six foot two forward Brendan Woods would be a nice fit.
Obviously Brendan felt the same way and called Badger head coach Mike Eaves to make a verbal commitment to attend Wisconsin for the 2011-2012 season.
Woods father isn't your typical hockey dad. His name is Bob Woods and he's an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals. Yes, the NHL team. The elder Woods spent the previous five seasons with the Hershey Bears of the AHL, the last two as the head coach.
Brendan is currently in his first season in the USHL. He only has 4 points this season though 20 games but missed the first half of the year due to a dislocated knee cap. Not exactly an easy injury to come off of, especially as a rookie in the USHL.
Woods is also expected to be a decently high NHL draft pick this summer. The NHL Central Scouting service ranked Brendan as the #52 best skating prospect in North America for the upcoming draft. That means he is projected to be drafted probably anywhere from the second round to the fifth round.
Cornell, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Northeastern, and North Dakota were also in the mix according to CollegeHockey247.

nope, snapped it pretty good. I was there at Buc Bowl in Sioux City and saw it...
Saw him recently and he is a legit prospect. big and can really skate when he gets going. perfect coach to teach him the game with Poapst at the Steel.

Potential Wisconsin recruit Max McCormick won the Wisconsin Mr. Hockey today. Max is a forward from Green Bay Notre Dame Academy.

The senior forward edged seven other finalists in voting conducted by members of the WHCA.

Could you fill us in on Notre Dame Academy? Green Bay isn't really a hot bed of hockey in Wisconsin, but obviously it's a private school. Player profiles do not show where each kid is from.

Actually, their youth program has been strong on the State level for a few years now, which should eventually translate into high school and beyond.
They also have a really nice facility, the best that I've seen in the state. I believe it's called the Cornerstone and has 3 surfaces including an Olympic sheet.
Not saying they're a hotbed, but they're coming along.

If it used to be two, then the Olympic sheet must have been added later. It's called the Resch rink or something or other and they do speed skating there in addition to hockey.
Was up there in January for a peewee tourney and it was a nice facility.

Green Bay hockey has been growing and the DePere program has always been strong. The high school programs in the area are being aided by the players that had previously played with the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers starting to play high school and Team Wisconsin instead.

I think the Resch Olympic Pavillion opened December 2008 - give or take a month or two.
The new rink is indeed Olympic-sized. It has a smaller seating capacity than the primary rink where St. Norbert plays. SNC's new women's team (which debuts this fall) will play there, along with other youth hockey, figure skating, speed skating, etc.
Cornerstone - the name of the overall facility - also has a health club training facility operated by a local hospital, a new pro shop, a Subway, and room for a sit down restaurant. (Liquor license issues have held that up).
In the last five years, Notre Dame, De Pere, Ashwaubenon, Green Bay (a joint team for all four public high schools), and Appleton have all moved from club to WIAA varsity. Manitowoc either has or will, I think.
It's all local kids, including McCormick. The Jr. Gamblers have out-of-area kids, but the high schools really are those schools' kids in almost all cases.
Once a new rink opens on Green Bay's east side in a few years at a new Salvation Army facility, it is hoped that Green Bay can split into two varsity teams. GB already does this for swimming and wrestling, and hopes it can get the numbers needed to do it for hockey, too.

One of the reasons (not hockey, just the area in general) I moved up to Appleton last year from the Madison area. Lots of growth up here, from Oshkosh to GB. There are still crappy areas, but it's definitely a nice growing area. And the people are a little more down-to-earth.

Chuck and many others on here know much more than me, but Eau Claire seems to be turning into somewhat of a DI hockey hotbed lately, with Dowel, LaPoint, Soley, Dahl, Donnellan, and the McCabe's all going D1 or committing in the past several years. Chuck, maybe you could share your thoughts on this when news is sparse (or you have a spare moment). Thanks.

I am from GB but live in Madison. The Gamblers there are huge! They are the hockey version od the Madison Mallards: fun games for all.
Years ago when I was playing squirts hockey GB had the Bobcats, a semipro team that had a modest draw. With the Resch Center, hockey is now fun to watch because the old Brown County Arena was a real dump.
I hope UWGB steps up and forms a D-3 team. Maybe St. Norberts can move up in class to D-1? They would have natural rivals with NMU and MTU. The GB newspaper gives those two schools better press than they give to the UW.

Since you are from GB, wasn't Notre Dame formerly Premontre? In the early 80's I remember Premontre as having one of the premier private school hockey teams in the state.
