Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Even without people leaving, if you don't have the ability to bring in both Hughes and Sheehy that's pretty depressing for fans. From what I can tell, Sheehy doesn't seem to be number two on the list.

I tend to agree with you on this point. I don't know the $ situation obvs, still...immediate playing time and promise of $ in the future you'd think would be enough?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

markwojo brings up a great point. Wisconsin is perhaps in the best position of most all of the upper tier schools in being able to offer playing time. Which is a heck of an important thing to a young, higher end player. The importance of $$ is going to vary from player to player, but everyone wants playing time, and there's going to be plenty of opportunity for freshmen next year. It's all a bit of a poker game on some of these kids, but UW holds some pretty good cards with money and playing time and Eaves and Co. might be playing them for what they are worth.

On Kerdiles, I'm of the same mind as I was a month ago in that if the season ended today, it would be best for him to come back. Not knowing the extent of his injury, or how long he'll be out, the future is pretty difficult to assess, but his turning pro is still, to me, based on how his play develops down the stretch. He's remarked often on the importance of college and being a role model so it seems as though he might lean toward returning if there was some question. Obviously if the Ducks really want him to go, he will.

I'm hoping that the Ducks have enough depth right now that they advise him to stay. He has talked about the importance of college hockey and being a role model for other west-coast American choosing between the NCAA and WHL, but he did grow up as a Ducks fan. If Brendan Woods can follow his dream of playing pro hockey and leave after 2 years, Kerdiles could join the Ducks. Of course, each individual has a differerent decision making process.

The Ducks are stacked at forwards and goalies. They have Etem, Rakell and Smith-Pelly in the AHL. These three would be playing in the NHL if they were playing for most of the other NHL teams in the league. Will Kerdiles be playing center or wing in the NHL? I would think the Ducks make some trades for D with the stock pile of young goalies and forwards they have in their system. Who knows maybe Kerdiles gets traded at the deadline.

Not sure how well it applies but I think Woods and Kerdiles are a little apples/oranges. The things Woods needed to develop were probably better worked on in the AHL. Woods is probably not going to be a top six NHL'er. His game is go into the corners and bang some heads, dig out the puck and play strong in his end. Points aren't really a big consideration. I think in retrospect for his type of play it might have made sense for him to go.

While Kerdiles probably isn't going to be an elite scorer, (he's a two way player with speed and a strong motor) he is going to be counted on for points, and he probably is a top six type player. The skills he needs for the NHL certainly can further develop at this level. Going too soon will be the danger. He's a great college player and may very well be ready at season's end, I don't know. The Ducks are probably going to be the real deciders, but they have a couple of other center prospects playing in the pros already, so they may have time. Of course they could also trade him like they did Gardiner, then who knows?

Ha! I was called away and just saw bucky15's post before submitting. Funny we had the same idea.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I would think Denver has a full ride for Sheehy and a spot on the top 2 lines.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Which begs the question: What's holding them back?

The only things that make sense are where he sits on their recruiting board (is he #1, #2, #3?), do they have enough money to meet what he wants/needs? I assume his success at the USHL level has elevated him on the recruiting board (as has maybe a few kids chosing elsewhere). My guess is Cameron Hughes is rated higher then Sheehy on the Badger coaching staff board and that he will require virtually a full scholarship for any school to land him. If the Badger feel they have a legit shot to land Hughes....you have to let that play out as he is a potential first round talent.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Negotiations are always weird and who knows really what the story is? Maybe we're putting all our pucks in one basket with Hughes. Maybe if Hughes falls in line we think we get some other high end guy that wants to play with him... there are lot's of permutations to consider, I suppose.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Are there really FOUR players that they like better that they can't get as of yet? Because that's roughly how many more bodies we need.

The four bodies they come up with before the fall will not all be getting significant scholarship dollars. I have no idea what the Badgers have for available money, but I would guess best case scenerio they have one full (or as full as it gets in college from the Montpetit education we all got a few years ago) scholarship available, and maybe a couple fairly decent partial at this point to offer. The third or fourth body are not competing with Sheehy for playing role or scholarship money....those are partial money spots and 3rd/4th line type of roles.

I suppose that's something worth thinking about. But then again: do we know of any top-level uncommitted players that have played with him before?

I'm calling him Player X.

Because even after reading up on who's out there I don't think any of us know exactly who Player X might be. Or if he exists. But it's certainly a possibility that he does exist. On or off Chuck's list. We deduce that Sheehy isn't #2 on the board because we think if he was he'd be offered. We think Hughes is #1. So therefore Player X is #2.

And Player X is either dependent on what Hughes does... or some other variable we know nothing about.

umm... Right?

Hughes is teammates with a good '96 dman....Hickey....at Spruce Grove. Spruce Grove also has a '96 forward Simpson and a '97 forward Correale that are pretty well thought of (neither are realistic options for this fall...but the following year and certainly the year after that they might be options). Dylan Hollman is a '94 teammate at Spruce Grove that has 24 goals in 36 games....maybe an option for an overage Canadian that you can grab without a ton of money (so all your frosh aren't 18 or 19 years old?). I would imagine he and the Edmonton area kid Dante Fabbro we had in for a visit may know each other too.

Fabbro is a British Columbia kid, from closer to Vancouver.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

So how many scholarships does a D1 team have to work with?

It's 18 scholarship equivalents spread out over ~26 players (15 F, 8 D, 3 G) and from what ive been told all the players on the team get something around a 7.5% scholarship. Managing scholarships is even more critical for the staff than managing roster spots, IMHO. It is very much a case of having to meet a salary cap while having players can opt out at any time, but needing to sign players to replace them before they leave.
