Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Seriously ... recruiting a 13 yr old. This is beyond ridiculous now. NCAA needs to put an end to this early verbal commitment and the handshake agreement between coaches not to recruit others verbal commitments. Sonny Milano decomitting from ND and signing with Boston is a prime reason this nonsense needs to end. Then programs like Wisco wouldn't find themselves in the position that they now are in with needing 6 or more fowards for a coming season.

Some of the players these programs are stockpiling makes you wonder what the parents of these players are thinking themselves. North Dakota for instance has more players committed for the 2014 season than they can take in during the next two seasons.

The insanity needs to end.
So it's not Wisconsin's fault that they are severely lacking for 2014 forwards? It's the system that allows verbal commits, and coaches to stop talking to verbals on a handshake...that makes sense.

Matt Ustaski first star last night for Langley in a 5-0 win. 1 goal, 2 assists. Leads team with 21 goals this season.

Sounds like Sheehy's options have opened up a bit. At one point the Badgers could have landed him easily (at least according to reports we've read)...interesting (not in a good way as it seems the staff waited far too long on him). I'm also wondering if Hughes would prefer 15-16 would the Badgers still offer?

Pretty sure he's always had options, though I'm pleasantly surprised to hear Minnesota is pursuing him.

oh, I'm not saying he didn't have options, just that from what Chuck (Andy) reported previously UW could have landed him 2 months ago if they made the call. They didn't and that's pretty disappointing.

I was waiting for my Monday morning dose of negativity from Solo....I was almost worried that we wouldn't get it. :D

Listing who you've talked to, and having offers from these schools are two different things.

They would still land him today if they made that call.

I try not to speak for kids as I'm not going to pretend to know where he is leaning currently, but I'd imagine he is going to get some great offers (if he hasn't already). To be in the discussion is something you should be happy about :)

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Yeah....I'm not buying Sheehy has better options at Minnesota, BU, or North Dakota....maybe Denver (they've lost a few commits in recent months....so probably have some newly found dollars available). At least not in terms of potential monies actually available and certainly not in role/playing time. Maybe if the conversation is IF GUYS TURN pro, we may have some money/role in the Summer...but if that were the case....Sheehy would likely already be a UW commit. The problem for UW is you can't offer Labate or Kerdelies money (I would suspect both have a pretty signicant ammount of scholarship dollars commited to them based on being from Cali/Canada and draft pick level talents) and if you are waiting on Hughes to decide first, I don't blame them for waiting/hoping on him. I would be disappointed if the staff had money available to satisfy BOTH Hughes and Sheehy and didn't pull the trigger on Sheehy based on his transition to the USHL level the first few months there (I can totally understand wanting to see him at that level of play for a while first though)

Pretty positive that's the case at Minnesota. Unless someone leaves early (and there are a few who certainly could), the Gophers probably won't have a spot for next year. At least I can't imagine how they would. Scholly $$ is a little more complicated as the Gophers have guys who aren't getting as much scholly here as they probably could elsewhere.

EDIT: Also, the offer doesn't always have to be better. Christian Horn turned down scholly $$ at OSU to walk on at UMN. Other variables are always at play. Each kid is different in what school, system, coaches, situation, etc... they like. Those factor in as well.

Even without people leaving, if you don't have the ability to bring in both Hughes and Sheehy that's pretty depressing for fans. From what I can tell, Sheehy doesn't seem to be number two on the list.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

markwojo brings up a great point. Wisconsin is perhaps in the best position of most all of the upper tier schools in being able to offer playing time. Which is a heck of an important thing to a young, higher end player. The importance of $$ is going to vary from player to player, but everyone wants playing time, and there's going to be plenty of opportunity for freshmen next year. It's all a bit of a poker game on some of these kids, but UW holds some pretty good cards with money and playing time and Eaves and Co. might be playing them for what they are worth.

On Kerdiles, I'm of the same mind as I was a month ago in that if the season ended today, it would be best for him to come back. Not knowing the extent of his injury, or how long he'll be out, the future is pretty difficult to assess, but his turning pro is still, to me, based on how his play develops down the stretch. He's remarked often on the importance of college and being a role model so it seems as though he might lean toward returning if there was some question. Obviously if the Ducks really want him to go, he will.

Guaranteed playing time, yes. At least probably as far as Minnesota is concerned. It would take a guy like Rau turning pro (which wouldn't be shocking) to open up a spot. Not sure about the other schools listed.

Ducks are a very deep organization at the moment. The Ducks have had problems in the past with players staying too long at Wisconsin.........
