Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Sounds like Jack Dougherty had a good weekend. 2g, 1a Friday vs. Fargo. Got a text saying he was "far and away USA's best d-man"

Shuey was in New Hope this weekend as expected for the Elite League tournament.

NTDP U18 forward Nolan Stevens committed to Northeastern tonight. Was a potential '14 F option. I think his bro is a freshman there so it wasn't a big surprise.

He was very strong against UND Sat night.

Chase Phelps has made a college decision, it's not Wisconsin. Badgers never got seriously involved (no offer). I don't think it's been announced and might not happen for a few days so I'll wait until the kid says something.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Matthew Purmal (Merrill, Green Bay Gamblers) committed to St. Lawrence. Badgers had small interest as a walk-on type but it never got serious I don't think. Jack Daugherty's commitment pretty much ended the possibility of going after him. Nice to see Wisconsin kids get shots though.

I don't know if anyone actually reads these updates or not but Vas Kolias from Chicago Mission committed to Boston University. There's players I like, players I love, and then there's Vas Kolias. Terriers got a great player here.

Know who else was after him?

Probably most schools. Sounds like UW jumped out of the race after Dougherty committed, which is obviously a no brainer. Makes sense overall when you consider the spots they had on D available after that. Still a really good player though.

Put together a list of kids to watch at the high school level in Wisconsin for this season if any of you are curious. Feel free to chime in with other suggestions if you see a lot of HS games.

Nice list.

Is Jack Andringa the son of Rob? Plays in Madison so that would make sense.

Notre Dame Freshman Vince Hinostroza looked pretty good this weekend ('til he connected with a rodent knee) and so far this year. 2011 ND recruit from Chicago Mission then via Waterloo. Was curious Chuck, if you recall if the Badgers were ever in the mix for him?

I'm not sure.

No problem, the only reason I ask is because he's another one of these undersized (5'9" 175#) guys with great skills that seem to show up a lot of places. I'm always curious about where they come from and how heavily they get recruited. To me the small guys that really have it are tough to pick out of the crowd.

He was playing on the best AAA team in the country, and had interest from a lot of schools, but also committed to Notre Dame fairly early in the process, so I'm not sure how serious things got with the other schools involved. There were a lot of really good, small forwards on that team. Some have panned out at the college level; some haven't.

What's striking to me is the lack of Madison area kids on your list. Back in the day , that list would have been loaded with city of Madison kids not to mention Madison area kids. Times are a changin'.

There's some good Madison kids who are playing Caps or Jr. Admirals that would have been on this list. Cole Hults is a name to remember who was a freshman at Edgewood last year but is playing Caps now.

That's just what I mean. Easy for everyone to say go out and get a bunch of high skill smaller guys because they'll stick 4 years and yadda, yadda, yadda... But the risk is a lot more with a smaller kid generally. You figure you get a 6'2" kid that can skate and you'll find something to do with him. Anyway, when I see a smaller guy that's really good I'm always curious about how they were recruited and developed. Thanks for the input.

Really? Is BC talent evaluation > Wisconsin talent evaluation?
