Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

FWIW I checked on Seamus Malone today to see if there had been any change in plans (possibly accelerating school to come in early), and he said there was not. He's still on track for 2015. Noted the difficulty of accelerating with a shortened school schedule playing junior hockey (his coach said the exact same when I talked to him last spring). Not sure his exact schedule obviously, but most of these USHL teams practice in the afternoon so the high school kids only go to school until like noon or 1 pm. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

Matt Ustaski (Glenview, Ill.) from Langley in the BCHL has committed. 6-foot-6, 225 pound forward. 4g, 1a in 13 games this season. 11-16-25 in 55 last year.

Not exactly a blue chip pedigree....but hopefully a quality pickup in the end. I like he will be 20 when he shows up. We will be real young next year and having a few 20 year old frosh mixed in won't be the worst thing. I assume this will be limited scholarship dollars and 6'6 225 is certainly a nice frame to work with (you can't teach size). Maybe this turns into John Mitchell in that it is a big frame that is a little off the radar. Hell, this kids pedigree relative to Mitchell is off the charts, so who knows. Still need 3-4 forwards for next season.

Just talked to his dad about the decision for a story. Officially visited Ohio State and Colgate before Wisconsin. Had a visit to Cornell next weekend but canceled it after his official to UW. Notre Dame, Union, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton and Harvard were other schools that were in the race. Gives you an idea of his intelligence level.

Cool....sounds like some decent teams were sniffing around him. Hopefully a nice find by Eaves of a late bloomer growing into a bigger frame.

I know who's more talented than John Mitchell....Tyler Sheehy. *sigh*

Bye comes at a good time, staff can recruit this weekend. I'd be surprised if at least one wasn't in New Hope for elite league tournament this weekend.

Heard they are sniffing around sheehy again, would, be a good opportunity to see him. Phelps too for that matter.

Sheehy would be nice. At this point, they need 3-4 forwards and a couple of those need to be more then role players. Sheehy has the look of someone that could be more then a role player and as a '95 he would at least be turning 19 shortly into the season.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

If you didn't see it this week, Christian Horn left Minnesota to go to the USHL. He did not play in any games this season, so I believe he'll be eligible to play college hockey again next fall (will have three years of eligibility left).

I believe Wisconsin had at least some level of interest in Horn before he committed to Minnesota. I know he had a scholarship from Ohio State but chose to take a recruited walk-on spot to be a Gopher. With Big Ten rules he couldn't be on scholarship at Wisconsin for his first year, but given he wasn't at Minnesota either, I'm not sure that would be that big of a deal for him. Given UW's situation, wondering if this might be a fit. Something to keep an eye on at least.

Would be interesting to see the U become a pipeline to Madison.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Tyler Sheehy has opted to play in the USHL and not play his senior season at Burnsville. Good move for him if he wants to play college hockey next season. Guessing that news piqued the interest in the offices at 601 W Dayton St in Madison.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Sheehy should make himself much more ready out of the box by jumping to the USHL which the Badgers will certainly need next year. Horn is an interesting development....Beese's old linemate.

Besse and Horn were teammates, not linemates. At least in the Benilde games I watched two seasons ago. Connection is still there through...
