Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

The phrase, "Wisconsin came late to the party" implies that we were interested but didn't make it enough of a priority - for whatever reason(s).

If it's not the case, and we were all set as far as forwards go, then it shouldn't have been said in that way. Especially by someone who we all believe has more inside info than the rest of us.

I think this whole discussion has developed due to a miscommunication.

I could care less where our players come from and if player A from somewhere else is better than player B from Wisconsin, I'm all for signing player A.

As has been stated, this isn't Kessel. That one stung because of how elite it was perceived that he was - and turned out to be.

I think people are reading way too far into the comment. If anyone has more questions, they can contact me directly about it.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Which is too bad....pretty impressive scouting report from OTB

Natural athlete has an explosive stride that gets him to top speed extremely quickly. Rocks opposing skaters on the forecheck and is just tough as nails, going wherever it takes to come back with the puck and make something happen. Is dominant in the transition game as no one can match his combination of velocity and physicality.”

This weekend, we said this about Tarek on OTB Elite following this weekend’s showcase: “We were pleasantly surprised to find Tarek playing with Omaha instead of Janesville of the NAHL, where he had tendered for this season. The high skill, compact, focused skater with speed outworks everyone on the ice and was flat-out dominant here shift-to-shift, posting 18 points in just 5 games. Backchecks hard, can deke his way up and down the ice and release a hell of a shot off the transition that rings off some metal with enough of a clamor to rattle any netminder.

Omaha captain disguises his intent around the ice and wheels around the zone awaiting a play to develop, though there was a bit of individualism here inherent with that – not enough to call him selfish by any measure, however. Thrives in traffic, elusive and seems magnetized to the puck. Places his shots beautifully. Intense competitor who finishes really hard checks. Is going to be a hell of a college player.

Wisconsin recruits Keegan Ford, Seamus Malone and Ryan Wagner will skate in the U.S. All-American top prospects game tonight in Pittsburgh. You can watch it live online on FastHockey.com for FREE.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

It is a fair assessment to make when looking at it in terms of team needs. People often forget that when looking at recruiting classes and think like it's uniform across the board. Which is why I sometimes think recruiting class rankings are a little overrated. The Gophers don't have any major needs (at this point anyway) at forward in 2014 and it's been known for a while. That's why they've really not been heavy players for guys that were highly likely going to be 2014 .

I believe that they recruited hurley, gersich and gropp so it seems like they do want a high end guy to come in next year but for the most part I think you're right in saying they didnt have a lot of needs for next fall

At the time, Hurley was the only one that was set in stone as a 2014. The other two have to accelerate (which I don't think would have been pushed at the U). And while I agree they've looked, they clearly don't have big needs when they have 16 forwards now and only lose 2 to graduation (teams generally carry 15)

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Seamus Malone 1g, 2 A last night for Dubuque. Luke Kunin 1g, 1a for U.S. U17's.

Matt Berkovitz is playing against Brock Boeser this morning at 11:30 in New Hope if anyone is interested.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Caught the Berkovitz vs. Boeser showdown. Thought both players played well...ended in a 4-4 tie. Boeser has five goals in six games since returning from illness including two goals when I saw him Saturday.

The focus has mainly been on forwards for the '14 class, but UW is probably looking to take one more d-man given the fact it's unlikely McCabe returns. Jack Dougherty is the popular choice from the NTDP, and would be a great fit. Matthew Purmal from Merrill is a name I'm hearing is picking up steam in recruiting circles. He's a defensive d-man, but it sounds like college coaches are enamored with him. Could be an option.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Huge pickup for UW landing D-man Jack Dougherty.

And that speculation on twitter a week ago made me think we were getting too hopeful too soon.

After such a positive experience at the Kohl Center tonight and this news, I feel like nothing can go wrong for this program. Sellouts every night, UW wins the next few national championships, but somehow other fans don't view the Badgers as an evil empire and they love us all. :D :D

Do you know if Dougherty and Sheey are buddies? I know they were both committed to Oz and Ohio St at one point...and I know you've said the staff may have cooled on Sheey, but just curious.

Kudos to the coaching staff on this one. Dougherty's stock has continued to ascend for the past 18 months to the point where it wouldn't be shocking if he was a first round pick in the next NHL draft.

Obviously a lot of work to do with '14 forwards yet, but that d-core is pretty stacked for the next few seasons with Dougherty, Linhart, Tischke, Ford, Berkovitz and Stillwell. Great mix of size, skill, skating ability in that group.

Hopefully UW will have enough offensive talent not to waste the quality D and G's they'll have next year. We shall see.

Good oppurtunity for potential 2014 forward recruits....hope Eaves and Co can sell a few on that. Goaltending certainly should be real good next year...but not so sure on the D as we will have a lot of new faces trying to acclimate to college hockey.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I assume based on you listing it here he was on the Badgers radar. Was he a prospect for 2014?

I had mentioned him previously as an option (I was spit balling names). I don't think UW was seriously interested, no. Was just updating the previous note.

Sounds like Sheehy had a huge weekend against some tough competition. Think they'll start warming up to him?

I was there to see it, at least the game against the U.S. U17's. Not the first big weekend he's had this fall, he was leading the Elite League in goals and scoring coming into this week.
