Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Sounds like Wisconsin held its high school camp last week and there were quite a few twin cities high schoolers in attendance. It's certainly an advantage when schools can get kids on their campus for events like that to show off their facilities.

Somewhat related, I suppose, I just saw Grant Cruikshank tweet some pictures from the Wisconsin locker room with Adam Burish. Cruikshank is one of the top 98's in the state and plays for the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals. I'd say Cruikshank, Jacob Thousand (Waunakee) and Jack Vincent (Jr. Admirals) are all names to remember. Yes, Jack Vincent is Ron's son.

While I've got your attention, don't forget the name Sean Dhooghe (Chicago Mission). 99 born will be one of the most sought after players in the country, and he's in Wisconsin's pipeline.

Blue chippahs or just above average talents?

Blue chippahs or just above average talents?

Hard to classify anyone with that as everyone has their own definition. But, no, I'd say they are just above average talents. Doesn't mean they can't continue to get better. Found out over the weekend that Cruikshank is the son of two speed skaters (including Bonnie Blair). Apparently he's a good skater...

I heard that former Middleton defenseman Jake Bunz has visited with UW. I believe his father is former Badger Garry Bunz.

Bunz and a whole bunch of other Wisconsin players are on various USHL teams protected lists...here's a link to the complete list.

Badgers bring in a ton of Wisconsin kids for unofficial visits. It doesn't cost UW anything, and it's always nice to get kids exposed to the campus. Not a bad strategy at all. If the kid turns out to be a dud, it's no skin off Wisconsin's back. If he blows up into a stud, he feels like UW showed him the love.

Even if Jake Bunz doesn't turn out to be a Badger, he's got a little brother that made it to USA Selects this summer. Never hurts to flirt.

Once speculation is eliminated the "offer he can't refuse" appears to be between $3,775,000 (J. Schultz) and $1,605,000 (J. Clark) - although M. Mersch and/or J. McCabe may change this average.

I did hear from the same source that his brother is quite a talent...

Chuck any scoop on the badgers new recruit that just committed? Mathew Freytag from Wayzata HS?

This was the player from the Twin Cities I was referring to that I figured was going to be a Badger around the time Boeser, Kunin and Wagner committed. I believe he visited campus shortly before that week. As you said, plays at Wayzata, Tri-City Storm draft pick -- and the most important thing, kid can score goals. Good shot and can find the back of the net. Solid addition.

How's his skating and defensive awareness?

Haven't seen him enough to comment on defensive awareness. Games I saw him play were against Benilde when I went to see Besse play so I wasn't focused on Freytag. Skating seemed fine, didn't seem like a hindrance by any means. Power forward who can get to the net.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Skating is just average. I'd say pretty good defensive awareness for a player his age. Wayzata does an excellent job teaching that for a HS team.

Chris, you're spot on about Wayzata's defensive capabilities. I don't remember Freytag individually in his own zone, but the team did a good job of keeping quality scoring opportunities to a minimum.

The first game I saw Wayzata play last year against Benilde, BSM had 40 shots on goal to Wayzata's 24, but Wayzata won the game 7-1. Granted, the goaltending disparity in the contest was pretty wide, but Wayzata played a fantastic tactical game. They let Benilde shoot a billion long range shots and transitioned quickly off the rebounds. Freytag had four assists in the first game.

The second time I saw these two teams play was in the sectional final at Mariucci, and Benilde out-shot Wayzata again by a large margin. Benilde put 30 shots on goal, but probably attempted 100. I'm only slightly exaggerating. Wayzata must have blocked 30 shots that night.

The US Under-18 team roster was announced today. Ryan Wagner is the lone UW recruit, and 3 are uncommitted. I did a quick search back in some Buckys5thQuarter posts and saw that Wagner is a 2015 recruit. What's the likelihood he gets moved up to that 2014 class we've been worrying about? (I don't really know anything about him, or other similar scenarios in recent history.)

I don't think any decisions have been finalized about what year he'll come to campus, but I think given the changing situation he'll likely end up in Madison for 2014. Same with Christian Dvorak.

If Dvorak and Wagner both arrive in 2014, how many more forwards do they still need to get for 2014?

Obviously Chuck would know better, but I think a tell tale sign is that Cedar Rapids dropped Wagner from its affiliate list. IMO if he was going to stay a 2015 commit, Cedar Rapids would have held onto him so he could play here next year. I wholeheartedly believe he will be in Madison in 2014.
