Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Who's he replacing? The Eichel buzz seemed to grow again recently...

Well, Wilkie already left so that's one spot. Ryan MacInnis everyone knows has been rumored to Kitchener since the OHL draft, then, this picture showed up on twitter today of him in a Kitchener uniform. So, I guess you can assume MacInnis is gone as well.

Gersich replaced Wilkie, but not surprising if MacInnis.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Wagner to NTDP stings a lot. I am almost positive he would have made Cedar Rapids roster this year. This continues my hate for the NTDP. They poach players off USHL teams with no compensation whatsoever.

Question though, with the 2014 forward class being lackluster, will Wisky accelerate Ryan to a 2014?

This seems a bit selfish to me haha I'm guessing the kid would rather wear red, white, and blue than live in Iowa.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

My post was not directed at Ryan at all. It is how USA hockey/USHL allows the NTDP to do whatever they want. I don't know how closely you follow the USHL, but this comes 4 days prior to a 30 man roster having to be locked in to the USHL. Year after Year, the NTDP poaches players from USHL teams and it gets old. Call it whatever you will, but losing a draft pick and a lock to make your roster is a joke. Go to any USHL forum and you will see the hatred for the NTDP from 90% of USHL fans.

It's no different than USHL teams culling players from high school and midget programs. Anytime a player moves on to a better opportunity there's going to be people affected. There's really nothing that can be done about it. I'm sure Dubuque was upset when Providence decided to bring Jankowski in last season instead of letting him play a year of junior, but they went and won the league anyways.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

There is a difference because they are in the same league. I understand they are getting more exposure in international tournaments and scouting the NTDP brings , but they are also playing against the team(Cedar Rapids in this case because they are both in the eastern conference) that received no compensation for them being poached. Yes USHL teams can add an undrafted player to their affiliate list, but in this case they cant. With Ryan being a 2015 commit, he still has to be an affiliate to retain, thus my asking if Wisconsin would accelerate him.

Yes Dubuque fans were upset with Janko moved on to Providence but again that is not the same situation. A better example would be when Riley Barber got called up to the NTDP but they could use an affiliate spot because Riley wasn't going to return.

The NHL released their Futures List this week (for next year's draft), and it included UW recruit Seamus Malone. It also includes Jack Dougherty and Tyler Sheehy who are recent Ohio State decommits that Chuck indicated UW has an interest in. One other name that I found of interest is Alex Falconer from Shattuck St. Mary's as he is from Kohler, WI. Falconer was a Junior last season and played on SSM's Prep team, putting up modest numbers (4-14-18 in 57 games). He is a 6'2", 180 pound Center.

I put little stock into the list at this point given the names included and excluded. That's all I'll say on that.

Centered around Jack Ramsey and 1+ missing uw recruits? The Shattuck kids are always kind of a mystery, too.

I honestly spent about 2 seconds looking at it. Saw some kids who I don't think are any good on there, and some kids I think are really good not listed. So, whatever, I guess.

I don't get the concept of the list. Some of those names from MN are probably not even close to 4th round picks. I thought maybe it was a first round watch list until I got to the MN section.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Lots of familiar names lighting the lamp at USA Hockey's Select 16 Festival. UW recruit Brock Boeser is tied for tops in points with 4-8-12 in 5 games. Wisconsin players Tom Novak (U of Minn. commit) and Sam McCormick are both in the top 8 players for points. UW recruit Luke Kunin has 3-3-6 in 5 games.

Looks like team Grey (including Kunin and Collin Peters from Sheboygan) plays team Kelly (including Boeser, Novak & McCormick) this morning in the Championship game.

Wisconsin recruit Brock Boeser has made Team USA for the Five Nations tournament after finishing in a tie for first in points at USA Select 16's. Verona native Tarek Baker, and River Falls (Gopher recruit) Tom Novak have also made the team.

Notre Dame Academy's Sam McCormick tied for camp lead in points and goals. Sam's Notre Dame teammate Tony Stillwell (defense) and Wausau West's Kevin Conley (forward) made the All-Star Game at camp.

I am one of the 90%.

USHL teams pay dues to USAH, only to see NTDP take players for its roster. By definition, the USHL (as the only Tier 1 league) is supposed to be the pinnacle of junior hockey in the U.S. But NTDP gets to play outside the rules.

So why does the USHL do this?
- Because it absolutely loves hearing NHL teams say "with the x pick in the NHL draft, (insert team name here) picks John Doe, National Team Development Program, United States Hockey league.

- it absolutely hated hearing the above phrase, capped by "NAHL"

- Because the NTDP games are heavily scouted, it is continued good exposure for the players on the other 15 teams.

- Although there is a team in Muskegon, it gives that exposure in Michigan, home of so many D1 teams. Also, the Ann Arbor location is convenient for scouts.

- Because the teams are U17 and U18, it does lead to some players choosing other USHL teams instead of Canadian juniors, for those not ready for college.

- Keep your friends close and enemies closer.

I hate it. I wish I had a tape of Herb Brooks absolutely blasting the NTDP at an ASG in GB a decade ago. He got up in front of the USAH brass and told them what a waste of money NTDP was on so few kids.

I do get that the US has better results at some international tournaments sending teams that always play together, instead of USHL select teams. But if they are the best players at that age group, they should be playing for the regular teams in the best league.

As for not wanting to live in Iowa... there is something to be said playing for a team that has solid support and where you are a minor celebrity. That happens in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, etc. NTDP plays home games in front of 150 with no atmosphere. I think it's got to be much more fun playing in almost every other USHL city. But - for some - wearing that crest and having that international experience is important. So, in that regard, it is another choice for some players. But I still don't like it.
