Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

Sam Stange, who played high school hockey in Eau Claire along with 8 USHL games last season, and started this season on Sioux City's 4th line is now tied for the lead in goals in the USHL with 17. Two of his goals came in the first six weeks of the season and 15 have come over the last six weeks. He was a great high school multi-sport athlete who is now focused on hockey.

He has signed his NLI with UW.

In other great USHL news.....Matthieu De St Phalle is 3rd in the USHL averaging 1.33 ppg. His teammates are the other top 3 in ppg. That team looks loaded.

MDSP, Malmquist and Stange are solid covers for any early departures.

I had hoped the staff was going to bring in De St. Phalle this past year. With his familiarity with Turcotte and being good at setting up other players I thought he would have been a really good fit.

I'm guessing he got pushed back for Ryder Donovan which may be beneficial in the long run, but I think may have hurt UW this year. They really could use guys who share the puck well this year.

It would be great (but not expected)if nobody left early and these incoming recruits came in like gangbusters, but Im just dreaming.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

I don't think we would have roster space for so many of these kids. It is great to think about them getting one more year though.

UW is getting all these good kids to commit, but most of us dont think that's the current problem, right?

Seems like this is really flexing some real recruiting muscle. Pops, Brendan Morrison, is a Wolverine legend - All time leader in points, Multi CCHA player of the year, '96 NCAA Tournament MVP while scoring the game winner for the Weasels in the Championship game, '97 Hobey Baker winner. He's like the Ron Dayne of Michigan Hockey and his son just committed to a rival school. Stunning.

Brayden at this point doesn't have the flashy numbers of his dad, but is a real competitor. Be nice to get him in when he's 19 or 20 and have him for 3-4 years.. Back bone of your team kind of kid. Great news for us and should feel crushing to the Weasels, even if he's not a superstar. (yet!)

The question is, who else is after Morrison? His dad was a hell of a player along with Boterill (sp?) so I hope he’s even 1/2 as good.
Was Michigan after him?

Correct. Recruiting isn't the problem. Getting them to play like a team and into systems where they can be successful. Maybe the staff needs a consultant to help them understand how to motivate millennials.....

That’d be something. They come back knowing how to motivate millennials just to find out that gen z makes up the entire roster. Tide pods and all.

Whatever. The point is they need to understand how to motivate "the younger" generation.

Trade MS in for a player who has been out of college for no more than 5 years. TG and Oz know the X's and O's. Go with a young communicator.

NHL Central Scouting Rankings are updated. Lots of Badger-related players involved:

North American Skaters:
#10 - Dylan Holloway (F - Feshman)
#101 - Daniel Laatsch (D - NLI signed recruit for 2020)
#128 - Sam Stange (F - NLI signed recruit for 2020)
#130 - Zach Urdahl (F - verbal commit for 2020/2021)
#208 - Mike Vorlicky (D - Freshman)

North American Goalies
#8 - Noah Grannan (verbal commit for 2020)
#19 - Cameron Rowe (NLI signed for 2020)

Of course, I’m curious to know what Grannan does now that Rowe is signed here.

In my opinion, if we lose Grannan it would be devastating. His numbers are improving AND he's ranked higher than Rowe. Nothing wrong with 2 really good goaltenders instead of having to lean on one, but we don't have that currently, either. Competition is good!

"If you got anything to you at all as an athlete and a competitor, you don't care what the circumstances are. You still got competition." Bill Parcells.

I don't se why he wouldn't still come here. If you believe in yourself, why would you not come. And a lot can happen over 4 years either way. Too bad Matt J left, he's become a quality player for Tech. Seems to me he didn't bet on himself, and if he would have, he'd have beat out the transfer guy.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

If you believe in yourself, you might look at Jurusik and Hayton and how consistently better transfer goalies play when they aren’t at UW.

We’re fools to think that maybe the coach and team constantly throwing Lebedeff under the bus and playing garbage defense in front of him aren’t the problem.

Ding ding ding!

Howie must pull his hair out watching this team.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

Rowe was the USHL goalie of the week last week, ya! There is hope. But neither him or Grannon have very attractive stats and TG has shown no ability to develop goalies.
