Wisconsin Recruiting: Filling the foundation with 5 stars

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: Filling the foundation with 5 stars

I have to agree with all of you that bringing in Soleway early is the best move.

He did very well last season, and I'd rather bring in a high talent early than use his spot with a grinder. Gives us an excuse to shop for another top prospect later on.

Grant Besse (106) and Jedd Soleway (131) were listed by NHL Central Scouting on their final rankings today.

Not much of a gap there, which is a surprise, though they are projecting how they will play in the NHL and not how they will play next year.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: Filling the foundation with 5 stars

Once you get passed up by the draft, are you still able to be in the draft pool to a certain age, or are you simply a free agent?

January 1, 1993 is the oldest you can be and still be drafted this year, and that date moves up a year every draft.

By the way we're less than 40 posts until a new thread here. Please suggest new ideas for a thread title.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting: Filling the foundation with 5 stars

Wisconsin native Evan Janssen played well at the end of the regular season and has really turned it up a notch in the USHL playoffs with 4 goals and 1 assist in 8 games for Dubuque. I've got to think the staff has an eye on him as a possibility for one of the forward spots in 2014-2015.

It's possible. Not a sexy recruit, but I suppose it's possible. Seamus Malone is a 96 and outscored Janssen (a 93) on the same team this season. But Janssen would be brought in as a fourth line guy, not a scorer. I think there are better options out there but I don't have a clue as to what the staff is doing with the 2014 forward recruiting class.

By my count they have six forward slots to fill for next season with the only option already committed to possibly bring in early being Christian Dvorak. If he has a good season with Chicago next year (and I think he will), he'll likely be in Madison for 2014. That means they still have (likely) five spots to fill. We've talked about it before but I figured they would have filled a couple by now.

I was wondering why there wasn't more panic about that class when we talked about it before.

This will be the 3rd time this every 4 years unbalanced class cycles through the program....so panic has been replaced by apathy.

Well before we thought Jedd Soleway was a part of that class, now he's being brought in early.
I felt the switch should have been flipped before that. You pretty much lose one total year of player eligibility in 2017-18 because of him coming in early. I'm sure there are other underlying effects, but not enough that one person coming in early should make the difference.

Just saying, it didn't feel as big when it was filling 4-5 spots as opposed to 5-6 spots. I know it's only one, but yeah. And I also figured they'd have filled at least 1-2 of those slots before now. Real interested to see what the plan is.

It isn't as if Badger fans have not had other, more immediate things to panic over either.

It isn't as if we didn't know that UW had a big class to fill, just that the lack of information makes it hard to panic because all you know about are the concerned verbals and some strong rumors. Complete ignorance on the depth of the players the coaches are considering.

Fargo Force defenseman Taylor Fleming decommitted from Air Force. Wisconsin had interest in him when he was at St. Thomas Academy. Could this be the USHL defenseman "thetruthhurts" was talking about the other week?

Nope, but he would be a good fit for Wisco
