Wisconsin-Minnesota Border Battle

Re: Wisconsin-Minnesota Border Battle

(plus CrazyDave if he makes the trip!) :)
I have new tires on the car. Ready to go. :D

That said, I'd be surprised if this wasn't a split.

Actually I think that poor showing by the Gophers will serve as EXTRA motivation. That doesn't mean they will necessarily win, but they will be very motivated to play their best.

Agreed 100%. I actually said, shortly after it happened, that I felt the 2-1 result against MSU was a good thing.

Re: Wisconsin-Minnesota Border Battle

There is no shortage of motivation on either side. It will come down to whoever plays better (within themselves and within their systems) will win.

A huge advantage for the home team besides the best band and fans in the country will be that UW gets the last change, so Johnson will be able to get or avoid the matchups accordingly. I would love to be able to track the amount of icetime per line and the matchups, but that will be impossible being at the game, it's way too emotionally investing. What will the line combos and d pairs be for the rodents? On the D pairs, what is the talent gap from the 1st to the 3rd pair?

I'd feel really good about UW's D situation if I knew if Maddy Rolfes was playing or not. She has missed the last 6 (?) games and she's a top pair D and on the pp (with a mystery injury, suspected to be a concussion). If she's playing I feel really good about UW's 3rd d pair, if not, my confidence wains a bit on the backside. But in the series MJ can afford to shorten the D bench if needed w/o a long term negative impact.

I wonder who the refs will be......I just want the games called consistently.

Brandt-Cameranesi-Potomak
Pannek-Schipper-Piazza
Williamson-Reilly-Garzone
I expect these will be the top 3 lines

Stecklein-Wolfe
McMillen-Baldwin
Skarzynski-Cline

Frost also will sometimes go with 5 D in a series like this. I thought Skarzynski was 5 and Cline was 6 early in the year. It seems the last few weeks Cline has been 5. I think Skarzynsksi still should be 5.

I believe Frost only played 5 D in the whole Frozen Four last year.

Go Gophers!!

Frost likes to match the Pannek line against the opposition's biggest scoring threats, especially if they have one dominant line. It will be interesting to see if he thinks Wisconsin has a line he wants them out against, and how successful he'll be doing that on the road.

Cline was hurt during the Frozen Four last year. My understanding was that it wasn't serious and that she could have played, but her effectiveness might have been limited. I'm a big fan of Cline, who I think is the underappreciated sort of defenseman for whom not being noticed is a sign that she's playing well. I think Skarzynski definitely has a higher ceiling once you consider offensive potential, but is also still prone to freshman mistakes. I think this team really should be using all six of them, though Cline and Skarzynski wouldn't get the ice time the top four do.

Also, these are the likely pairings for the first few shifts, after which you could see just about any potential mix of them depending upon the situation. The forward lines usually remain very consistent, both within a game and between games, but the defense pairings don't.

This is for someone who watches the Badgers regularly: do you expect Johnson to match up with the Brandt line? Is one of your lines considered a checking line?

I'd say the Pankowski-Wellhausen-Clark line (54 pts) is the top scoring threat, though Nurse is VERY dangerous on the 2nd line with McKibbon and Shaver (44 pts). Sometimes Johnson starts the Nurse line and has Pankowski's rolls off the bench in the 2 slot.

I cannot say for sure UW has a checking line, I'd guess either of the top 2 lines will go against Brandt's line. If I see either the 3rd (Cogan-Sowchuck-Jones) or 4th line (Johnson-Harding-Donner) out against her I'm going to freak out. Brandt scares the crap out of me.

She's really pretty mild mannered; no one to be afraid of at all.

She may be nice off the ice, but when the puck is on her stick on the ice she makes me want to poop my pants, I better take some Imodium AD before each game. I could just blame the stink on the rodent fans sitting behind me.

let's hope for a split...6-5 an 10-9.

Re: Wisconsin-Minnesota Border Battle

Here's a highlight reel of Wisconsin's Womens Hockey wins vs Minnesota over the last 4 years.....wait I'm having trouble with the link...no that's Minnesota's highlights...someone must have deleted the Wisky one...sorry...can someone from Wisconsin help me....one of you must have the link. ;)

You're right the Minnesota streak is meaningless....:D

Wish I could be at the games.

No, Tim's right. Brandt is scary. But her wingmate Cameranesi is a total no show...and so is their deer-in-the headlights freshman partner.

That is hilarious! Someone asked Frost about a "checking line" at the last chalk talk. There is no such thing in womens hockey. He does tend to put the Pannik line out against the #1 line often because they do a great job of shutting them down & score well above expected at that. If the skunks want to put their #2 line against Bradnt & company that would make me toss my previous prediction for a Wisco win on Friday right out the window. I would be very surprosed if W does not try to match 1-2, 2-2, 3-3

I recall the Terry line used to be on the ice a lot when the other team's top line was out there. To me, that is a checking line. If they can also score, so much the better.
