Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

What a frickin disaster.....

Our three top recruits for 2015 - One is at Nodak, and two are in the OHL.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Wisconsin Hockey Hour is on tonight. I think I'll tune in.

Not that there's anything anyone can say. "Luke came in and said he felt it was the best decision for him at this time."

Compared to Bracco at BC and this, Opilka did us a huge favor by deciding in late June to bolt. What a guy!

dang if I didn't have things to do, we could go to the GD and try to ask him if he feels even more in the hot seat. Can't get rid of Eaves soon enough :( I don't know if this is better/worse than if we had been swept by ASU.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I wish Andy/Chuck could put his views and insight on this situation.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

To save Jason King the hassle of responding to a bunch of emails, I'll enter the company line here.

"The Wisconsin Hockey program is very very excited to announce that Mr. Kunin has decided to pursue opportunities in professional hockey. Although we are disappointed, its exciting that one of our own has received this fantastic opportunity."

Too late, I already emailed him. what it's gonna take for them to make the changes necessary to restore the program....

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Same goes for Kunin, he kinda knew what he was getting into.

Yeah, I agree with that. Why all of a sudden bail now? I could kinda understand after the Boston Butchery one might get weak legs, but the next 4 games and 6 of 8 games so far UW has been competitive, and he was part of the solution for at least this year anyway. I too just hate quitters.

All these bailouts give Eaves more life, not less..."See, I'm getting top notch players, they aren't staying"...He's the victim and not the criminal.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

This is what JK sent me after Opilka left:

Tim, Sorry I have been out of town but wanted to thank you for your comments. Based on your comments I am not sure this email will matter but I wanted to respond. There is no doubt that Luke deciding to go pro early was difficult to swallow but I guess you can't fault the young man for following his dreams. I know his teammates here at Wisconsin that he had been training with will miss him. I have been actively checking up on our young men and they are training very hard this summer and you can already see a difference in their bodies. Last season was disappointing and we expect better from our men's hockey program. I know Coach Eaves and his new staff are working very diligently to get things turned around.

ON WISCONSIN!
JK

Let's see what the response is to Kunin's departure.

I don't agree with that. NHL Advisors are telling these kids to move on to improve their draft status. At least part of that is the record of the team and another is the coaching staff and their inability/perceived inability to improve the players. Is another playing in an empty rink?

How many more top recruits have to walk away before the athletic department wakes up...

That is one way to look at how this affects Eaves' job.
I personally don't feel the bailouts are giving him more life or I hope the people in charge aren't stupid enough to buy a line like that.

He did quit on UW, but I still feel this is a good career move for him. That is why I thought he would be gone at Xmas break. OHL teams are much more aggressive than the WHL, plus the OHL is located around the hub of hockey media and scouts. Great exposure opportunities for someone who wants to make a name before the draft.

Not agreeing with that last part but just stating (perhaps the obvious) that it is frustrating to know that if everyone that committed to coming in actually came in and played until they signed a legitimate pro deal, we'd be the favorites this weekend.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

wow, 36 people in the thread

nothing like a young stud jumping ship a month into the season to get people interested :o

edit: up to 42 now!

If we're not careful, we're going to equal the recent Kohl Center attendance!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

You are correct. I wouldn't want to get forced into going to North Dakota either! Maybe he's the smartest one of all!

smarter than us...he gets out of here meanwhile I still have 8 pairs of hockey tickets I doubt I'd be able to get rid of.

Here's the thing, if it is indeed legitimately a good career move, and the same applies to Bracco and Foegele at UNH (who did the same thing last week in his sophomore season, then:

1.) Why come in at all and screw these three programs out of scholarships? (Let alone the other players who could have received them.)

2.) Is the CHL on the brink of re surging to the extent that we soon won't see top prospects go NCAA at all? Maybe this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I was so fed up last spring, I was going to send my last set of tickets to Alvarez with a note saying "If you think this is acceptable, you go watch it." But I didn't get around to pulling the trigger.

There is still time this year....

1. I didn't understand why he came at all. I was shocked to see him even make it to campus.

2. The WHL is the weakest of the three leagues. That is why our best bet to keep a Canadian recruit is if they are from Western Canada. This is also I feel the reason all our Canada kids are from the West. Minnesota kids also fall in the WHL zone, so are less of a flight risk. I think in regards to the OHL there are a few top talent Americans playing there with some NHL connections (their parents) and that may be a driving force for others to join them. I would imagine these kids have either played together or have been in camps together. If parent X gets to parent Y about the OHL and parent X spent 10 plus years in the NHL, parent Y starts to listen. The QMJHL is a good league as well. We don't recruit that much on the east coast, so we don't hear much about it. If anyone is in Canada during the hockey season, I would recommend checking out a CHL game.

One last thing about the Western Canada, they have a better junior league system to stay within the NCAA eligibility then the rest of the country. BCHL and AJHL.

These are just my thoughts.
