Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Now are you listening, UW?

Last night as I was traveling to Vilas County to chase the elusive Esox Masquinongy, I listened on iHeartRadio. Brian Posick only mentioned there were still some seats available, but after seeing some posted pictures, that's just **** embarrassing. We knew it was going to happen, it's just shocking when we actually see it. As I've posted before, I will never knock the players. The ones there were asked to play, or some walked on. I would do the same. I just hope all the big wigs who traveled to Lincoln to see a loss (just my prediction), will notice this.

After decades of seeing Badger hockey, this is really saddening.

Posick did bluntly state once that it was the worst crowd he's ever seen, which I thought was actually surprising and didn't toe the company line.

I mostly feel bad for the kids on the ice, playing in front of 6,000 fans in a 7,000 seat capacity rink would be fun. In a 15,000 seat rink, it looked like a scrimmage crowd. I almost want to buy tickets to go support the kids, until I remember that we have to make a point this year, or we'll be stuck with no changes to the program. It feels terrible and embarrassing to see the crowd, but it's necessary I think.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Just watched the replay.

The Good:
The first 10 minutes looked like a genuine Badger Hockey team.
Luke Kunin has a rifle shot and can skate.
Adam Miller played very well especially for a guy that hasn't started a game in 4 years. Made all the saves he needed to make, gave up some bad rebounds but I thought once he settled in, he looked fairly solid.
Jason Ford hustles.
A couple of rockets to the pipes.
The Freshman in general.

The Bad:
The first ten minutes of the third looked like last year's team. To me, it showed the hallmarks of being very tight though, passes off line, mishandled pucks, uncertainty in responsibilities, hesitation... I think it can be fixed if things don't just go completely off the tracks.
Besse glides way too much. I think 2 sog in the game. For quite awhile Besse went to the third line and Ford went up. I don't know if a message was being sent or if they just saw something they wanted to try. Hopefully the latter because messages shouldn't need to be sent to upperclassmen in a season opener.
Poor Jake Bunz. Took a penalty in one of his first shifts and never saw the ice again.

The Ugly:

The attendance.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Take a look at that picture end of the first, UW athletic department, and tell me how bringing back Metaphor Mike back makes any sense financially. You good ole boys better wake up before he kills the program any further. I heard the stat from Posick that they were outshot by 20 over the last two periods. Classic MM stat there.

I am going tonight. I shouldn't have wasted my money on renewing. This year is probably the end for me.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I saw the game and the number of fans was a joke but I hope tonight will be better. You have to remember it was and still is Eaves team. Shuchuk could only do so much to help the players out, Eaves system restricts skilled guys from showing what they can do. Now to finally respond to what happened to Boeser, the kid didn't want to retake his ACT. He wanted to come to UW but wasn't willing to have to take the test again. Why do you think he didn't go to the gophers and ended up in NoDak.

Shuchuk is a clown. Why do you think he was managing two small ice rinks in Madison before MM hired him? Did you hear him on interview with Posick? Boeser and the ACT, where did you hear that? Show us some proof the instead of trying to defend Shuchuk.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm kinda starting to think you don't really care for Schuchuk all that much.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Wow TJK you're a bitter little man! Either Shuchuk didn't sign one of his hockey cards for you or he give you a puck at a game. Listen about the ACT score is correct. He had a high teen score and didn't want to get it up to where it had to be. He even couldn't get into Minny where two of his junior team mates where going. Why don't you save your money and your bitterness and stay home and just watch the weather channel! Your a joke of a Badger fan!

Not bitter at all. When MM hired that guy I knew it wouldn't work and called it then.

When I see my favorite UW team being obliterated by a coach who has run the program into the ground, and an athletic department that apparently doesn't care, as a season ticket holder for fifteen years, both nights most of those, I have a right to be upset.

And we all know what he thinks of UW fans anyway. Time for you to follow tech I guess.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I think it's fans like YOU he didn't care much for! I know he cares about true Badger fans and the players that he coaches.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

shuchuk didn't care for anyone who questioned him, that's why any fans who wanted us to you know...win or play good were called idiots. He was good player, could be a good coach, but he shouldn't get his first gig and cut his chops as the main assistant. And if it was something he wanted he shouldn't have been a rink manager, he should have been an assistant already.

here comes my ramble:

this is exactly right. eaves has run the program into the ground. My Dad and I started with season tickets in 1985. I wanted to ditch them entirely after last season but my Dad held out because he wanted to retain the great seats because he thinks a new coach will be in place in 2 years...we'll see about that. I for one gave him my 1/2 of the tickets, I have no desire to see an Eaves coached team again. Judging from the crowd last night I'm far from alone on that front.

Barry Alvarez has given no indication ever that he can manage the hockey part of the athletic department so I have my doubts Eaves will get the scrutiny he deserves.

I don't care if Eaves doubles his win total and gets 8 wins or even 15. Anything short of 20 wins and he should be fired so they can start the REAL job of rebuilding this team into a perennial contender. and I'll be honest I'd want him gone with 20 wins as well because I think he's poisoned the well.

As for Boeser? Who gives a **** whether it was ACT's or not? He's one guy. If Eaves hadn't whiffed on a number of kids and hadn't implemented some restrictive/boring brand of hockey here the team wouldn't be staring up at the daunting task they now have in front of them which is essentially rebuilding and rebranding the program after 12 years with one coach.

This is far worse than Sauer's final years though. Far worse.

It will take a full house cleaning/about 5-7 years with a new coach to right the ship. Don Granato would have to come in and wade through 3 years of Eaves ****ty recruits until he finally gets his guys in around year 4 and then you need to give him a minimum of 3 years with his kids to see what he can really do.

as for the crowd last night. It's really unimaginably sad to see how far the program has fallen:
when i first started going to games in 85 the Colesium was rocking each and every game. They were selling out every home game and the team kicked so much *** they wound up defeating the U.S. Olympic team one year and they were a perennial national championship contender. Granato, Tuttle, Ranheim et al. Then came the 87-90 class which was phenomenal. Followed up by 2 classes that I think individually held the most talent UW had ever seen on one team. One which Sauer later claimed they landed every kid on their wish list for 2 or 3 consecutive seasons. Plante, Zent, Schier, Carey, Rafalski, Tucker, Moore, Nelson, Hill, Spencer, and on and on. The students brought banners in, the band was rocking, the team was a feared opponent that skated toe to toe with Minnesota or played rough and tumble with North Dakota, it didn't matter which brand of hockey was brought in against them they'd play it and generally win. All of the crowd chants, the blue line club etc. the team was cocky and backed it up with their play. Remember Derksen making a save against Minnesota and following the guy who took the shot around the net chirping at him the entire time as he skated behind him around the net showing him his glove? Remember Jim Carey saying "hold em to 3 and we'll win?" that was when this team could easily score 4-6 goals a game.

it's difficult to reconcile. Wisconsin hockey today just isn't Wisconsin Hockey. It's not even a shell of its former self. It's a 0. A non-entity in Madison anymore and a non-player nationally.

I bet the 85, 86. 87,88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93 or 94 team could lace them up today and kick the **** out of the teams Eaves puts out there. And I'd love to see that as a scrimmage, watch the current badgers get destroyed 14-2 and also watch Eaves' friggin head explode when he sees the "lack of discipline" from the former Badgers who get creative and skate all over his "discipline" and light the lamp at will.

I want the best for today's kids but I feel sorry for them. They're in a no-win scenario and some of them must realize that.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Well, that 3rd period was worth the $9.99 for the btnplus. These guys have some grit and a bit of talent to boot. There were some freaky bad passes late in the 3rd and in OT by the D. On to Bawstin.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

8098 officially, which is far higher than the number of humans in seats. In the real world, it's safe to say it was marginally less disgraceful than last night.

It was definitely noticeably better...I mean less bad. The 3-goal comeback woke the place up, which was nice.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Sounds like some mildly encouraging signs that we won't be as bad as last year (which would be tough to do anyway).

Also sounds like the AD and rink management are still on their slippery slope to killing the college atmosphere.

Defending Schuchuk? Really? I mean, the ACT story is most likely true (didn't we all assume he's be a Gopher when he put himself back on the board?). But that hardly excuses the fact that he was pretty much ignored in the months prior.

If a kid can't get into Wisconsin because of test scores, regardless of who the coach is isn't going to matter.

IMHO, Eaves biggest failure as head coach isn't recruiting, because the recruiting landscape is completely different than it was 20 or 30 years ago. It is the almost criminal lack of offensive development that forwards have displayed during his tenure as head coach.
