Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I think you guys will double your win total from last year at least. No way it can go that bad again, even if it looks as bad on paper.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

At about 6:55ish, I was about the saddest I've ever been at a Wisconsin hockey game. Not the most shocked by a heartbreaking loss. Not the most disappointed from watching the team get shelled. The overall sadness was starting to feel very real, which kind of caught me by surprise, as I thoroughly expected a pathetic crowd, numbers-wise. Seeing it in reality hit me hard. It was a visual representation of the huge difference of what could/should be and what is. It was a visual representation of how the Madison area could have a great college hockey environment, but instead, it just...doesn't.

I'd expect to see more students make it to future games - it was lower level only, save for maybe 2 groups in the second deck's first row - based on the sales and the back-loaded home schedule this year.

This...it was bad, it was really bad. it was almost ghost town esque at a couple points. no lines for the bathrooms, 3 total concessions stands open up on the 2nd level. You get used to seeing the same people at the games. They're gone. yes it's the first game but they disappeared half way through last year and already told you they won't be back. I think there were maybe 15 people total in my section. The crowds made the game....now the game made the crowds leave.

On the bright side, Dress Up Like an Empty Seat Night was a wild success!

Women's twitter posted a picture of an empty labahn. Still looked better attended than tonight's game.

Also instead of getting water heaters for the bathrooms they installed a pair of TVs every 6 inches in the concourse and bathrooms. So when you leave you can still see how many empty sears there are.

It filled in a bit more than this. The pic was taken at puck drop basically. Still was a sad amount.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Official paid attendance was 6,467.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I wonder how far one would have to go back to find one that's lower.

The 2013 series vs St Cloud State at the Coliseum. Before that, I'm pretty sure you'd have to go to the '60s or maybe very early '70s, unless there were some anomalies at the Coliseum since then. If my memory serves me well, the Thursday night game vs. Alabama-Huntsville in December of 2012 set the record, and it was over 7K.

Edit: Was it 2005 when the WCHA first round series vs. Alaska-Anchorage was at the Coliseum? I don't know what the figures were for those games.

Based on those pictures, looks like that number is being generous.

To be fair, I have yet to see wide-shot pictures from after people finished coming in. A noticeable portion of the crowd arrived late.

5912, 8100, 3423 for those three.

Funny that series came up. Drove down from Stevens Point for the Friday game and got to drive home in an unexpected ice storm. Was real glad I was wearing sandals. Fun comeback win for UW and that was the game Brückler pulled himself out of after giving up a shortie early in the third. Puck goes in and he gets up and skates directly to the bench. Elliott came in and I think UW scored three unanswered after that to come back and win.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Both goals NM scored Miller really didn't have a chance. Both were on breakdowns that were reminiscent of last year, they need to clean that up. On the ppg goal, the D went to attack the guy with the puck below the goal line, a NM player went into the vacated space with Hughes a step too far behind him and that was that. 2nd goal was a horrible turnover with 2 NM players having tea and crumpets in front of Miller unattended. I am confident they can clean this stuff up.

I broke down and set up BTN2go and bought btn plus so I can watch more UW hockey. My daughter wanted to go to the last home HS FB game last night, so I took her and watched the game intermittently in the 2nd and 3rd periods. I guess 10 bucks a month is a low price to pay to watch my fav sport. I just hate shelling out that cash to the b6 when my cable bill is a zillion bucks already. At some point I need to investigate ditching cable/a dish all together. You win btn, you win. :( Spend my money wisely.

Under-amour....don't F with the classic hockey uni's. They already have changed too much under Eaves.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I agree with the comments that Eaves should have been fired but it the process we did lose a good coach in Shuchuk. If you ask any current or former players they will all say the same thing, that Shuchuk took the fall for the program and he should still be there. With him gone we lost a great coach and recruiter. Who do you think recruited Kunin and Olpika out of St Louis AAA or Freytag or Zimmer out of Wyzata HS. He also recruited the likes of Hughes, Rockwood, Malone and even Boeser. We now have a coach that hasn't last more than 2 years at any job and other guy who spent more time in the ECHL than any where else. All I know is I'll be cheering for Bucky on Friday and I'll have to say I'll be cheering for the Husky's down the road as well!

He failed to seal the deal on Boeser. He recruited and coached a woeful scoring team last year. I do have hope the guys he has coming here produce, but his track record is that they typically under-produce. Hopefully the new coaches can get more out of these guys, I'm hanging my hat on that since there 3 years of guys signed up that Shuey is responsible for.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I saw the game and the number of fans was a joke but I hope tonight will be better. You have to remember it was and still is Eaves team. Shuchuk could only do so much to help the players out, Eaves system restricts skilled guys from showing what they can do. Now to finally respond to what happened to Boeser, the kid didn't want to retake his ACT. He wanted to come to UW but wasn't willing to have to take the test again. Why do you think he didn't go to the gophers and ended up in NoDak.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Now are you listening, UW?

Last night as I was traveling to Vilas County to chase the elusive Esox Masquinongy, I listened on iHeartRadio. Brian Posick only mentioned there were still some seats available, but after seeing some posted pictures, that's just **** embarrassing. We knew it was going to happen, it's just shocking when we actually see it. As I've posted before, I will never knock the players. The ones there were asked to play, or some walked on. I would do the same. I just hope all the big wigs who traveled to Lincoln to see a loss (just my prediction), will notice this.

After decades of seeing Badger hockey, this is really saddening.

That's how I felt pretty much exactly, and I've been watching for less than half of a decade. Going in, I would've been more surprised to see them break 8K last night than to not break 7K. Seeing it, and seeing my fellow students trying to maintain what we had with crowds double the size, was just an awful feeling.
