Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

I have to say I find all the hoopla over the practice or scrimmage... or sorry... I mean game!

...er... strike that. I mean World Championship of the World -- Hockey Spectacular!!!

Anyway, I find it a little mystifying.

The reason it has been at the forefront of the discussion for so long was because UW decided to not allow anyone to go watch it. Maybe such things happen more often than I realize (regardless of division), but I can't recall any in the 17 years I've been intently following DIII. If it were an open exhibition I think it would have been treated the same way the handful of other DI-DIII games in recent years have been: namely, as an intriguing novelty and unique opportunity to see a rare match-up. The seemingly confounding decision by UW itself is what created a stir among a lot of fans. Without that we'd have seen about a quarter of the discussion.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Wisconsin hockey also had an intrasquad scrimmage that was open to the public. It was held in Green Bay before the season started.

Guess who is also having a closed door "super secret scrimmage" this year? Bo Ryan. The Badgers have a closed door scrimmage against DePaul.

As for Baggot, I doubt he really cares if Eaves' feelings are hurt or not. It's not as if he was trying to keep anything a secret, he tweeted out score updates.

Apples and Oranges. You're talking two DI schools in a scrimmage. Facts are Facts, Wisconsin was skeered (I don't think this extends below the coaching staff/players, this was the higher ups) they might lose/tie/not blow out SNC and didn't want to deal with the embarrassment when in fact its been proven over the course of the last few dozen years that the top DIII teams can "compete" with DI teams. The administration keeps coming up with these bogus excuses, "didn't know if it would count against our sos", "didn't have the staff to run two events". Wisconsin missed a great opportunity to do something great with in the hockey reigns of college hockey in the state. 8 out of 10 times Wisconsin probably wins. It's the fact certain suit and ties at Wisconsin wanted to hide this game in the corner and hope no one noticed just incase they got embarrassed. I did hear ESPN was looking at adding them to the "Not Top 10" list for tying a lonely DIII team.....

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Still to be determined if they'll let the public see the games at all.

There are a LOT of kinks to iron out. After all, it is the

World Championship of the World II-- Hockey Extravaganza!!! - This time, you might see it.

It'll be a media circus! (I heard a rumor that the club from Mystery, AK is prepared to challenge the winner of this WCotW...can you imagine?)

Who's the current holder of the world championship of the world? The last title bout ended in a draw.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

For those wondering what Baggot would write:

"In what UW coach Mike Eaves viewed as a scrimmage Saturday night at LaBahn Arena, the Badgers skated to a 3-3 tie with St. Norbert, the defending NCAA Division III champion. The Green Knights have a lot of veteran talent – several Division I caliber players to be sure – and great cohesion. They played with energy and an admirable edge throughout. Conversely, outside of a handful of moments, most UW players looked lost and uninspired."

Ouch. Not a ringing endorsement. No wonder there was no larger story.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

I know we saw it coming, but it's amazing that that's about all the post-mortem we'll ever see for the "scrimmage".

I'll agree that it's curious that Baggott actually criticized the team a bit, but I think it's even more telling that said criticism only came as an aside after praising SNC in the sentence prior.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

May have been a blessing that we had the 'scrimmage' instead of two additional games like Eaves wanted, could have been in a bigger hole going into the bye if we had played "lost and uninspired" hockey against a D-1 school.

A friend of a friend's friend overheard Eaves talking to an unidentified player this in the lockerroom after the scrimmage:
"Well, we're just basically calling this a glorified scrimmage, I mean, listen, we're talking about a scrimmage, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about a scrimmage. Not a game. Not, not ... Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game, but we're talking about a scrimmage, man. I mean, how silly is that? ... And we talking about a scrimmage. What are we talking about? A scrimmage? We're talking about a scrimmage, man. [laughter from the other players] We're talking about a scrimmage. We're talking about a scrimmage. We ain't talking about the game. [more laughter] We're talking about a scrimmage, man. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about a scrimmage right now."

Very interesting....

I agree that as fans we'd like more, especially considering the weeks without hockey, but as for Baggot writing, (or even Eaves commenting) what is he going to write that is of interest and doesn't sound completely excuse-ish?

I expect the actual facts are that it was presented to the team as, and the Badgers treated it as, an opportunity to practice and work on system play against somebody other than the other guys in Cardinal in White. Not much else for them to be really excited about in the midst of the bye week(s) grind they are going through right now.

From SNC's point of view, no matter how it was presented, the guys would obviously see it as an opportunity to be giant-killers. Hardly any better motivation in sports than that.

Eaves was quoted prior to the event as viewing it as a practice, while Coghlin was quoted as viewing it as a game. Why is anyone surprised then that SNC would look game-ready sharp and Bucky would look a bit out of sorts given these circumstances, and what kind of story is there to write about it?

It was decided that the Badgers would get to play in this game, despite not winning the WCotW outright, by a bunch of hockey promoters in a smokey room. Lots of controversy.

UW has played 4 games, SNC has had 4 practices.... of course they just looked at is as practice, they tied. What did you expect people to say? This was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs? Frozen Four Championship? From those who were there, they said UW played hard, and played the same lineup as the week prior. So there was no sitting the big guns, playing 5 on 4 even strength against SNC to give SNC hope, playing their underclassmen goaltenders, making UW play with opposite sided sticks, or giving SNC the smaller street hockey nets. UW tied a great DIII team who has 10 Freshman, tied 30-30 shots on goal, has had 4 days (yes 4) of practice, and competed right with UW. Closing the game off to the fans did nothing but save public embarrassment and public proof. It's the shame that UW closed the game to the St.Norbert fans/DIII fans because they were afraid this exact thing would happen. I'm sure if we had switched the title from "scrimmage" to "game" UW would have played better and won right? An underdog or not, SNC shouldn't (in some peoples minds) be able to skate, pass, hit, score, and over all play with a DI team like Wisconsin. This wasn't a "hot goalie", lop sided shots, territory, resting players, small bench, 3rd and 4th string goalies. From just about everyone in attendance it was a hard fought, overall great game. It's sad politics and being scared got in the way of more people being able to see it. The only thing that is longer than the trip ride home after tying a DIII team is the amount of excuses flowing from the UW staff as to why it was "closed".

I heard (from a guy) that the Badgers won the WCotW from the BlackHawks in July at a 2:00am street hockey game in Cabrini Green that was called for the Badgers after shots were fired. Of course several of the 'Hawks players dispute this and claim they thought they were only there to play an after bar bocce ball match.

You appear to have some difficulty distinguishing between what is fact and what is, at best, pure speculation.

And you appear to have some difficulty distinguishing between being skeered and Wisonsin's lame excuses oh wait its the same thing....there is no speculation....UW was scared this exact thing would happen. Poor Badgers......
