Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXIII: A Fanbase Gets Smarter When All The Idiots Jump Shi

You don't think that if UW just up and announced that they were dropping the program that the AD's wouldn't be ****ed that the conference would be risk of losing the auto-bid to the NCAA tournament? Sure that might be preferable if UW continues to be unable to beat anyone in NC play in the long term, but the short term headache that it would cause because they would have to focus attention and energy on fixing the issue that would be drawn away from their revenue sports. That is why I think they would not be happy with Alvarez, particularly since it was blowing up a program that was responsible for 5-10% of UW's AD revenue relatively recently that most of them would be happy to have.

I didn't see anything being said as drastic as dropping the program though. Even BG didn't do that. I was simply stating that the quality of the UW program probably doesn't hit home too much with other ADs because most of those ADs don't see hockey as a big deal to their bottom line. They care about it but not as much as a few other situations that they rely on. Not to mention, my suspicion is even if that doomsday scenario occurred, they would simply replace that team with an affiliate (and likely have a number of good programs willing to do it)

I can't fathom why Alvarez didn't just start fresh and fire the entire group. Even if the assistants are better, they are going to be fighting a major perception problem when recruiting against top programs for good players. Recruits are going to continually hear about the instability (whether real or perceived) at UW and then measure that against programs with a lot to offer but more stability in the coaching. It's just not a winning formula. You'd think a guy like Alvarez would understand that since he knows what it is like to be recruiting out there. Perception counts for a lot. IMO, keeping Eaves around has simply delayed the rebuilding another few years beyond what it already would have been.

From a Gopher perspective, it is easy to see the situation and take glee in it. At the same time, I also see it from a big picture perspective and a weak UW program doesn't help the conference. At least Penn State seems to be heading into a competitive situation faster than expected and seems committed to building an elite program so that helps fill the gap for UW's miserable state of affairs. Still, it would help all members if UW is on solid footing and competitive.

Yep, many of us are just incredulous/befuddled and more at why they didn't clean house. And as the days pass and more and more people realize how ****ed the program is I think there's a real possibility the KC crowds average 3-5,000 all season.

Who could imagined that when Wisconsin led the nation in attendance for something like 30 years?

I understand the outrage, and I'm just as furious, but I think people need to direct their anger in the right direction. This particular problem is not Eaves' fault. He's the root of a myriad of other issues, but not Luke Opilka. Let's be smart about this.

It think this is just one more thing that's bringing out all the other stuff in our minds again. The way I see this relating to Eaves isn't related to blame, but to the perception of the program to fans and potential recruits. Even if he doesn't deserve blame for this, the results of this departure means more losses and one less potential star, which further pushes the team to "needs to be overhauled" land. (Well, the center of "needs to be overhauled" land...it's already there.) Coaches don't like "needs to be overhauled" land.

If the state of the team was better, would Opika still have left? Because the state of the program is all Eaves fault.

I doubt STL had to twist his arm very hard to get him to switch course. If things were going better at UW, I have the feeling the decision would have been much tougher to make.

I get that the connection to Kitchner played a huge role here, but is it really so out of line to see this as a further indictment on and consequence of the state of the program?

I get that but it wasn't about the program. It was what I previously explained along with his agent who is from St. Louis as well.

And fyi, Trent Frederic has the same advisor...

With the beginning of the schedule against Northern Michigan, BC/BU, Ferris State, and Arizona State I could realistically see Wisco starting anywhere from 4-4-0 to 6-2-0. Worlds better from last year.

So what are lines looking like for next year?
Besse-Hughes-Soleway
Freytag-Rockwood-Kunin
Wagner-Malone-Johnson
Ustaski-Cavallini-McGuire

Schulze-Dougherty
Wittchow-Linhart
Davison-Tischke

This is on Opilka, is it not? He made the decision to bail.

4-4 is a pipe dream. 6-2 is hallucinating. I'm sorry to be harsh but 4to 6 wins would be about the best they can do by x-mas break and that's if they get a ton of breaks and some 3-4 guys take major strides froward. I actually feel they'll be lucky to achieve anything beyond 6 wins all season

I know you and others don't like the pessimism but reality has to set in at some point. Outside of Besse who will score? Who will tend goal? And how is there defense any better?

Also, are they going to continue to run terrible power plays to supplement that creative offense they showcase?

Besse, Malone, Freytag, and Johnson should be able to score. Hughes has to break out at sometime too.

I hope Malone, Freytag and Johnson can put up 15-20 points each but they are unknowns at the NCAA level and will be practicing against guys they just may be superior too already and that will not assist or boost their development.

We beat and tied Ferris State last year and Arizona State is D3 quality at the moment. That's 4 possible wins right there. I'm expecting major strides from Hughes, Rockwood, Dougherty and maybe even Ustaski. Then we are adding Malone, Freytag, Kunin, Johnson who are all very capable on offense. Currently still looking for the goalie though. Honestly Opilka was the main player giving me hope for 15-20 wins. The transition from Rumpel to him could have been an upgrade. To me Rumpel, while getting shelled every night, let in a ton of soft goals throughout his time at Wisconsin. He was a pretty awkward, so to speak, goalie compared to Elliott and Gudmandson. Don't get me wrong I'd take Rumpel over Gudmandson/Bennett/Peterson any day though.

I get that but was the same person who told you it wasn't about the program the same one who told you Opilka was 100% committed to playing at UW? Because I'd like to know who I can be mad at and thus want to punch in the face (figuratively speaking).

Considering we only had three 15-20 point players last year an influx of three more could go a long way in improving our scoring and win totals.
