Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I've always found it a healthy life decision to respect people based on the teams they cheer for. I mean, what could be more important than that?

The teams they cheer for are background. It's how they interact on the interwebs that is more important. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I just don't understand what this team is doing in the defensive zone. They can't keep up with teams like Minnesota and Michigan in that end because they buzz around and cause havoc and the Wisconsin guys get lost and have major breakdowns. And the Wisconsin players that can skate with these teams aren't strong enough physically to stop anyone. You can't play the system Wisconsin is playing on a big ice sheet with the talent level on this roster. Has to be the poorest defensive team Wisconsin has ever put together in the Mike Eaves era.

It probably don't help that (probably out of necessity if you want to have any chance of staying in a game) they are basically only playing 2 d pairings (other then a spot shift here or there) and 2 lines for the bulk of the game last night. Super thin roster that really don't go much further then 4 dmen and maybe 7/8 forwards....tops of guys that can compete at high d1 level (or at least have the talent that when they mature physically...they can). Freytag, Kunin, & Malone should be a nice infusion next fall along with some of the kiddie corp progressing (aka....getting bigger and stronger).

While I would love to see Eaves pull a rabbit out of his arse along the likies of Tkuchuk or somehow put Boesser into a hypnotic trance to sign a LOI, I thick Chuck might have been onto something with the Jones article that UW might actually need a dman with Boesser's freed up scholarship money then they need a forward.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

You're one of the few WI posters I fully respect, even though we've never met personally. I think there are about 3 others I actually know that I also respect: con1977 (retired) and his wife, and Almington (semi-retired).

I love you to. Harley has what I believe to be an accurate analysis on the game thread of the kneeing play.

Why do the players defending above the slot or who are in the high slot totally ignore players sliding down. Put your head on a swivel and cover someone. Simple simple crap, like hockey 102 material (101 is skating, handling the puck, all the basics.) Just play with smarts. This is SO irritating. I don't think there's a team who is worse at that in D1 men's or women's hockey. The only slice of hope is that by the b6 tourney they have this crap cleaned up.

The Rockwood/Wagner flip was genius, both looked a lot better in their new spots. Rockwood looked Zengerleesque at times. Zullinick was invisible all weekend. I see what Perrin meant when he said they worry about he does on the whole icesheet except the area in front of the net. Such a bummer.

The pp is coming around a bit too.

When you look at the guys Eaves has lined up coming in, and when you see it's simple crap holding these guys back, maybe things aren't as bleak as forecasted. Maybe BA is right. I don't know.

Anyone have video of the kneed to knee hit? I was driving.

I have not seen it either as I didn't get home till the third.

My comments directed at knee to knee hits is in general as opposed to regarding this particular incident.

If it was malicious, I'm not gonna defend our guy simply because he's our guy. If it was accidental, then it's unfortunate for all concerned.

McGuire apologized on the radio when he was talking to Posick. Seemed sincere to me. I wouldn't say is was a "dirty" hit. From my vanatge point, both players stuck their legs out. Either one could have got hurt but obviously the Gopher player got the worst of it.

Also, the amount of slashing, tripping, and holding the stick calls missed on the Gophers was absurd.

The officiating was awful. There was one tripping call on the goofs where the "offender" was checked to the ice and fell into the Badgers player. I did think there was quite a bit of embellishment on the rodent side.

This is true. Don't forget the blatant interference that occured a couple of times. I was looking for (and found) times when the Badgers got away with stuff or benefitted from phantom calls. I get that officiating is hard, but the mistakes went significantly in favor of minnesota this weekend. I was laughing out loud at times because of how ridiculous it was. For example, if a player puts his stick in an opponent's midsection and holds him by making the "hooking" arm motion that a ref would make, it's not hard to call. When that gopher player hit the Badger going to the bench a mile away from the play with no call, I began to question reality. As I said, I understand that it's difficult, but blatantly ignoring what should be textbook penalties (or what leads to a penalty shot) is a problem.

Due to the heated discussion about the kneeing, I should make it clear that this post is not about that for 2 reasons - it's not an example of referees missing something or a phantom call, and I saw it live from a low angle from the end boards, so I didn't have a clear look anyway.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

On a more positive note, I liked that they brought out the players from the 1989-90 team on the students' end of the ice. Almost all of us weren't alive in 1990, but we enjoyed it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Cheap shots, and now complaining about the refs? You guys really ARE trying to replace UND as our main rival! ;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

There was at least one complaint in your thread about the refs... so yeah.

;)

It might take a while for some of us, but I have faith that in years to come, we'll hate you more than UND. :)

I am a pretty terrible fan for rationally talking about the hockey games I watched this weekend. I suppose I should instead spout off nasty things about/to people on social media. That might be a better way to talk hockey.

It might also take the Badgers not having a craptastically bad season. :)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

That would help. Can you guys please try and carry your weight? ;)

I wish I were good enough to play D-I hockey...in the meantime, considering how far the disappointment has progressed (my reaction to last night's game-tying goal and BU's game-tying goal was "of course that would happen," not "NOOOOOO"), I'll just keep cheering for the Badgers. Also, I've noticed that the rest of the conference seems to want to get closer to the Badgers, even if that means dropping in the rankings!

Others complain about the refs; UND fans recognize injustice. Others use cheap shots; UND plays a physical style of hockey.

What am I not seeing here?

Oh, wow, that is weird.

The inherent nature of Gopher fan whininess.

Dude, that's totally just hockey knowledge. You'd know better if you weren't such a hockey ignorant idiot.

*takes glasses off*

Man, those things are powerful.
