Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

So I was looking over the tiebreakers for standings and if I'm reading this right, conference wins is ahead of head to head record? Am I reading it wrong? Shouldn't head to head be the first tiebreaker?

This is directly from the B1G hockey site:

Seeding for the Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament shall be determined by points accumulated in conference games. Points in the regular season Big Ten standings will be awarded as follows: three points for a regulation or overtime win, two points for a shootout win, one point for a shootout loss and no points for a regulation or overtime loss.

a) Seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the greater number of Big Ten regular-season wins;

b) If not determined by (a), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the team with the best regular-season winning percentage against the other co-champion(s);

c) If not determined by (a) or (b), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by comparison of total goals for and against each team in contests between (among) co-champion(s) in conference games. For sake of clarity, a team’s goals-against shall be subtracted from its goals-for in order to compare;

d) If not determined by (a) or (b) or (c), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by comparison of the winning percentages of the co-champions against the remaining highest ranked Big Ten teams in conference games, successively, until the determination is accomplished or all Big Ten regular-season contests have been considered;

e) If not determined by (a) or (b) or (c) or (d), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the flip of a coin.

In the case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria will be used in order until a team, or teams, is separated from the pack. At that point, the process will begin anew to break the “new” tie. In other words, when a four-way tie becomes a three-way tie, the three-way tie is treated as a “new” tie and the process begins with the first tie-breaking criterion.

Note: Shootout wins shall not count as regular-season wins for the purpose of breaking ties in the standings for tournament seeding. Games that go to shootout will be considered a tie game and treated as such in calculating winning percentages.

Saw a lot of Badger hockey commericials on WKOW today, albeit the commercials are dry but still nice to see the amount that I saw. WKOW news at 6 also had a feature on the team during sports. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Football season is over, so the moratorium has been lifted.

I do understand why one sport interferes with another in terms of fan interest even if their games are at different times, but it kind of bugs me how it makes such a big effect. I wish opening night was a big deal.

I wonder what volleyball attendance would look like if it were a spring sport.

Granted I don't see every episode, but it seems like the Badger Sports Report transitions from the football coach to the basketball coach as cohost about this time as well. Apparently we are a 2-sport school to man people?

I hate that. I hate that so much. I was watching a couple That '70s Show reruns on the local CW affiliate, and there was a commercial for an Inside Badger Nation show, where they said, "football, basketball, and hockey recruiting"...even they're touching on hockey, and there's no hockey section on that site.

I just hate the "Badger Sports Report" entirely because of the name. If it were the "Badger Football Report" and the "Badger Basketball Report," I wouldn't have a problem. I'd just quietly kind of wish for a hockey show. At least there's the Wisconsin Hockey Hour! For a "Badger Sports Report," I'd want a show about all of UW Athletics. Brian Posick and whoever else is in charge do a great job with "On, Wisconsin!" on The Big 1070. They give recognition to any UW athletes who deserve it, even if they're not in a big or medium spectator sport. Hearing those interviews with Kelly Sheffield during the summer was great!

I don't know if this is the same thing or a different thing, but I hate how that program treats us like a 2-sport school, when the people in charge regularly take pride in how Wisconsin fans support several sports very well, not just one or two.

yep!

And what irks me further about this is...UW Hockey 6 - UW Football 0 (and if football ever gets to 1 I'll buy everyone in this badger thread a case of whatever paint thinner you want!) also UW Hockey 6 - Roundball 1...so in terms of historical importance...well you know...

I know it's even further down the list, but this is also how I feel about women's hockey and why I wanted to start covering them on B5Q. I'm aware of all the arguments about the men's side at least being a revenue sport, etc ... But it's bugged me for awhile how little respect the women get. Obviously it's been a down year or two, but from 06-11 they won 4 of 6 National Championships. Your $5 ticket buys you the ability to watch literal Olympic-level talent during multiple weekends of the year. They are literally one of two elite programs in the country. It boggles my mind that they get less than no respect, even from other hockey fans.

We've got a winner.

Hopefully he plays better, as does the entire team. I found it interesting Eaves shook up the the top 2 D pairings.

"The Badgers Sports Report" is false advertising and if I were Eaves, I'd sue the A Dept. What a joke. It just further pushes hockey down the ladder. It would be great exposure for a 5 minute bit on men's and women's hockey every week to throw that in the faces of the fb and bb people, to maybe peak some interest.

As someone naturally interested in many sports, a lot boggles my mind. I do find it odd that so many die-hard UW men's hockey fans, who have been to every game for who knows how many years, haven't been to a women's hockey game. Similarly, I find it strange that students who are sports fans don't give men's hockey a chance. I understand that people are different, and not everyone learns the rules and history of cricket, for example, out of interest in sports. People have different interests. That said, there are enough sports fans who go to school here to justify my boggled mind. I don't get why there are so many fans who are interested in only 1 or 2 sports (in general, not just at UW)...why wouldn't they want to get into more sports, rather than just watching studio analysts beat the same topics to death?

I find it kind of sad that someone who goes to Marquette (a friend who was doing a fellowship program in Madison last semester) has been to a hockey game and a volleyball game, yet so many UW upperclassmen haven't. He said that if he went to Wisconsin, he would certainly get football, basketball, and hockey tickets, and doesn't understand why you wouldn't if you could.

People are strange.

What is Kerdiles's status for this weekend?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Badger Fans - my name is Ryan and I'm one of the members of the staff associated with BadgersConnect - the University of Wisconsin's OFFICIAL fan zone.

I see all the passion on this site, and it's awesome, and I just wanted to take a second to make sure everyone was aware of all that we have to offer at BadgersConnect (Connect.UWBadgers.com).

Before you get upset that you think I'm spamming, I'm truly not.

It's completely free and I'm not looking to try to sell you anything - I just want the Badger Superfans of the world to know that we offer them the opportunity to make play predictions, answer trivia, post photos and earn points by checking-in at the game. Well even give points for you just telling us where you're following the game from.

The more points you earn the more likely it is you'll win unbelievable rewards and fan experiences (like season tickets, autographs, merchandise, suite tickets, on-field passes, etc.)

We hand them out every week in a contest we call "Winning Wednesday" - once you sign-up you're eligible for every drawing. It's honestly really simple and it's a no-brainer if you're a true Wisconsin Athletics Fan...which you clearly are.

I'm happy to answer any questions or assist in helping you sign-up, but what better place to come than this amazing board? Look forward to discussing more. Thanks, and On, Wisconsin!!

Sounds like he won't be playing for a while. Not good. On Twitter he said he is home for a "couple weeks"

interesting...is he doing school work out there? seems a bit odd...EDIT: or are the kids still on break?

As I noted in a quick blog update (that hasn't been published yet) on the subject, I'm assuming the Ducks wanted to look at his shoulder. His family lives by the Ducks training facility, he could easily rehab there for two weeks while the students are still on break. I don't know if that's the case for sure, but it makes sense.

We're still on break. We're still on break for quite a while...classes begin on January 21st. The student section will probably be bigger for this weekend's games than it has been for UA-H and UAA, but it will still be small, especially because those who live in residence halls and aren't from nearby either have to pay a big fee to come back early, or they can't come back until the Saturday before classes begin. I've seen more people asking for this weekend's tickets than earlier in break, but plenty of tickets are eaten and sitting in people's desk drawers.
