Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

It's nice when the biggest critique of the game is the on-air production value. They almost missed the Besse goal completely and I'm not they even replayed how the play even developed. At least Braun and Andringa are pretty good in the booth (yeah, I'm still looking at you ESPNU).

I agree. Seeing and hearing Braun and Andringa on the local Fox Sports affiliate was comforting. And - I know I'm behind on this thread - I concur about the ESPNU broadcasters - brutal to embarrassing. It was like listening to a local cable access high school game. At least in that case, you know the broadcasters are probably kids or just starting out.

Besse played most of last weekend on Kerdiles' line anyways, so it wasn't too shocking to see this move happen. I also don't mind Zully sitting a game or two, he has obvious talent but hasn't been noticeable much of the season. Maybe this is the wake up call he needs.

Wisconsin host team for Tampa Frozen Four in 2016 per Andy Baggot on twitter.

I guess this is good news?

How? I see the athletic department is real proud of themselves with this, but how exactly does this help the program or the local Badger hockey fan? Do me a favor UW, go out and land a Women's Frozen Four and then get back to me.

That's what I was wondering. What's the incentive to "host" it in Tampa?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

What shortcoming could there possibly be in putting it back in the Bradley Center?

I suppose the Tampa bid had a better chance of getting picked (sexier choice and all), but it's still a shame.

Smells fishy to me. Barry has a nice vacation home an hour away from Tampa and is friends with lots of big wigs there. Also keep in mind that Barry lost a huge chunk of his net worth in the Nevin Shapiro ponzi scheme. Maybe I'm just throwing darts out there, but Tampa makes no sense to me either.

I thought Barry didn't even know hockey existed?

I'd have loved to see it back in Milwaukee. That said, with stories like this leading the JS website today...

Take with grains of salt as appropriate of course.

The Bradley Center is.....old? Does that make me....old? I was at the opening of the Bradley Center, exhibition between the Blackhawks and Oilers. I remember when we got the tickets that I was sooooo excited because I was going to see the 'Great One' play. Then he got traded.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

On the Frozen Four hosting in Tampa, I'd say it is good news on the whole. As good as hosting at the Bradley Center? No. Of course not. But NCAA bids are complicated animals, and since on campus hosting is a no for Hockey FF, it's very reliant on the venue wanting to do it. If for whatever reason the Bradley Center couldn't put together a competitive bid, there's not much UW can do about it. Remember, the bid includes a rather large fee to the NCAA for the rights to host, as well as other significant costs. From there the risk of profit/loss are assumed primarily by the host venue. (Several NCAA basketball regional sites have lost money, for example.) Florida being the experts on wringing every last cent out of visitors that they are, I'd expect Tampa's bid was very good.

I'd speculate that there may be some profit sharing for UW but I'd think the benefit lies more in the long term: AD employees gaining the experience of hosting a NCAA Championship; Improving our working relationship with and ties to the NCAA people; Adding in another small way to Wisconsin's national reputation; The sort of things that are not easily measured in immediate benefits, but rather in the long term, larger overall picture. On balance, it's good for UW, and I don't see why we wouldn't want to be involved?

Speculating that Barry's ties to Florida may have something to do with UW's involvement makes some sense to me, the rest is mostly hogwash. Barry has a vastly overpriced condo (Tram 2 miles to the beach and no yacht parking --it's practically the slums!) at Montenero on Pelican Bay in Naples. It's here, 145 mi. south of Tampa, for the curious. I have my complaints about Barry, but his big wig friends aren't among them since a large part of his job revolves around fundraising. I'm only guessing but the dollar amount Barry has had a hand in bringing into UW coffers in his time here is probably pretty staggering. As far as characterizing his loss in Shapiro's ponzi scheme as "a huge chunk of his net worth" ... well, I find that to be really stretching. Alvarez lost all or part of (it's unclear if it's all loss) his 600k investment. Alvarez makes around $85k/month just in salary, plus benefits. (his pension is worth close to $400k/year alone) Plus, Alvarez was making that 15 years ago as head coach. No doubt, $600k hurts, but it's nowhere near a "huge chunk". He's not in anything for the paltry kickbacks. Not like he's making congressman money, for crissakes.

The way I understand it, because there is no NCAA club anywhere near Tampa, they needed to ask a school for help. The closest hockey school was Alabama-Huntsville, who wasn't prepared to help them. So they had their choice of all the rest. And Wisconsin has a great reputation and earned a lot of respect for the FF in Milwaukee, so they asked us.

As far as I can tell, there are nothing but positives here. Our rep and abilities so far precede us that a group with no reason to approach us did anyway and asked for our help. And together, a place with no college hockey ties got it based partly on our help and backing and the cred having our name on it lent them. I've seen a lot of negativity attached to people questioning our involvement and I can't figure out why (not just here). It only furthers our credibility and experience.

For what it's worth, this is from a Baggot article a couple months back:

"The line of communication was apparently opened in 2012 when Tampa was the site of the NCAA Frozen Four and former UW deputy athletic director Sean Frazier was chair of the NCAA Ice Hockey Committee."

Oh for ****'s sake.

While everyone else involved is getting rich, no one else is saving money to maintain that place? There's nothing wrong with the venue, just take care of it!

Just imagine if we had Barry *****ing about replacing the Kohl Center in fifteen years...
