Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Just looked at our schedule again and see that we have yet another week off after Miami.

Horrible schedule to start the year.

Yep, way to many off weeks to build any kind of momentum.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

I've employed some advanced algorithms to look at all the permutations and discovered it's nearly impossible to lose 7 and tie 2 before Thanksgiving if you only play 8 games. It's GENIUS!!

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "momentum" thing. Each game starts at 0-0.

I just saw that...horrible is right. Eaves should fire his scheduler. It's difficult for the players - I'm sure - and the fans for sure to get into the routine of the season. I'm sure this season posed some scheduling problems but I haven't seen anything quite like this with other BI6 teams.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

As I've mentioned here before, more practice is never a bad thing for a hockey team. Even more important than that, these 'free' weekends allow the coaching staff to fly or drive anywhere in NA to recruit. Don't underestimate that importance.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

The only thing about the schedule that concerns me is this weekend's games. Miami comes into it with 4 more games under their belts and 6 games against pretty good teams. They have a pretty good handle on what they have I'd think. For us... Do we really know what we have yet? Got crushed, then came back and played 5 3/4 periods of good hockey and crushed LSSU the last 3. Kind of all over the place. We're still probably looking to find out a lot this weekend about where we are.
Maybe it's a hangover from all the PWR calculating late last year, but this series feels pretty big to me. Huge even. More so then the Goofs next as we'll at least play them 2 or 3 more times before the end. I think Miami is going to win a lot this year and anything less than a split could really come back on us later on. Would have been nice to have a good match this last weekend for the game experience going in is all.
On the other hand I did watch the rodents and the flashy helmets play a couple of very good college hockey games this last weekend which I probably wouldn't have done otherwise. Meh... In six weeks it won't matter much.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Hmm, I think Alex Brooks would like to discuss the whole "gents of the highest order" bit w/Commodore at a local coffee house;)

Fine, but we pick the place and someone goes with him if he goes to the bathroom.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Mainly, I don't like the schedule from a fan's perspective. Kinda hard to get engaged with all the on and off.

Oh well, soon to be remedied with about 14 straight weeks, most at home trough December and January.

Kind of flimsy to use the free weekends thing as anything major when other schools get to do it too. Plus, if it is all condensed in a smaller window, I think there are some disadvantages to that.

I have to agree with those that don't like so many weeks off in short span of time. They practice during the week either way so really you aren't gaining a significant amount of advantage by an extra practice or two on an off week. Maybe that would be real helpful to a young team that needs to work on systems but not as much with a veteran team like UW.

It is difficult to build a rhythm when you play a few series, get a week off, play a series, get a week off, play another series, get a week off, etc. I'd much rather have the open weeks spread out early, middle, and late portions of the season if at all possible. Especially in the second half when a team may need an off week to rest weary legs.

Not when you're looking to fill multiple forward spots for next fall and need to jump on the evaluations of available talent ASAP. The clock is ticking and the more free weekend time available right now to evaluate junior games which are primarily played on the weekends the better. All I said was that there are positives, and that is one. Nothing more, nothing less.

heh, well I couldn't blame Brooks if he wanted to get the hell out of there quick!

...from Johansson's call that night "Brooks was hit with so many lefts he was begging for a right!" :) I can't wait for the siouxies to come back to Madison!

Not sure one extra weekend is going to make a tremendous difference in evaluations though. If you don't know the targets pretty well by now, I'm not sure you ever will. Especially after Selects, USHL camps, USHL pre-season, Elite League, and so on. It's another viewing but...

Not to mention, it's not unheard of for a staff member to go scout on a weekend that their team plays. Potulny has done that already this season.

I'm sure you guys are probably already aware, but if you're not, Chris Chelios will be inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight at 6:30 CT. You can watch it on NHL Network.

Never forget Cheli knotting up Nodak with 12 seconds left in the '83 WCHA's on the way to a 3OT win. Just think, at one time the guy couldn't even tie his own skates, then later, he put on the cardinal and white and boom! All American, NCAA Champ, NHL All star, Stanley Cups, 3 time US Olympic team Captain... Halls of Fame.... Yessir, good things happen when you're a BADGER!

Btw-If anyone missed Eaves presser, he said that "the Canadian kid might maybe give 'er a go 'dis weekend between da' pipes, eh!"

It's possible that's not verbatim.

****, I wish I could have seen Chelios play in Madison.

we were 1 year too late to see Chelios (got our tix in 1984 and did not see the olympic team pass through Madison in I think 87?) but man what a hell of player for Wisconsin and the NHL. I got to meet him at Cheli's Chili after a Blackhakws vs. Avs playoff game. He signed my UW Hockey jersey AND my friends Avalanche jersey!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

I accidentally put this in the other thread at first -

At the Kohl Center for the bouncyball matchup between the Badgers and Florida Swamp chompers. The upper facade is full of the men's and women's basketball accomplishments. There are no banners other than a small "Wisconsin" and "Florida" banner, one for each, on the south end right under the hockey safety netting. So bizzare.

Edit: also, "#Badgers" is projected on the walls over the 300s in 4 places. Why it isn't #PaintLaBahn, I have no clue.

Edit 2: In an effort to not do the Gator chomp, the band did the sieve chant during the Gators intro.

UW athletic Department: ****ing off their Hockey and Basketball fans ad infinitum but hey, what do they care?

They just don't get it, this is amazing. I just can't imagine the who in the Asslethic Dept has such a bug up thier aaassss about banners. Did some slick consulting company think it would improve the fan experience? The same company that told them to paint LB beige and white? Let's remove every bit of character from the arenas. Let's make the arenas less memorable, we'd hate to offend anyone.

Is the gator chomp a bad thing? It sounds kinda cool.

I'm kinda bummed I'll be out of town with the Mrs this weekend, probably missing the hockey on tv. At least I can dvr and watch when I get home without knowing who won, if I can control myself. I think I'll have plenty of other stuff on my mind.
