Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

I keep thinking of a guy like Gorowsky who I don't think ever got a fair shot to show what he could do scoring-wise until his sr. year when he got on a line with skilled guys.

Gorowsky skated like he had cement in his boots. Besse isn't a burner, but skating is not a concern. Besse is a much better player.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

I sent a pretty critical email about promotion of men's hockey vs. other sports and what could be improved this morning. I got a nice, thorough response from Kevin Kluender, Assistant Athletic Director - Marketing & Promotions. The reply was nothing magical, but still better than I might have expected. One thing I learned - once a student buys season tickets, he or she is taken off the mailing list for reminders to get tickets. That explains that discrepancy between hockey promotion and basketball promotion I've gotten in my inbox . I sent a reply thanking him, and I just wanted to share as a reminder (at least to myself) that they're not a bunch of stubborn people blind to the fans.

Gorowsky was Mr. Hockey and averaged a pt a game in the ushl. Hockey's Future analysis....

History
After winning the state of Minnesota’s prestigious Mr. Hockey Award while at Centennial High School, Gorowsky came to the USHL as a much-anticipated player. In the 2004 USHL Draft, Sioux Falls made him the top overall pick and he hasn’t disappointed. Gorowsky finished the 2004-05 season second on the Stampede roster in scoring with 53 points (18 goals, 35 assists) in 54 appearances. His 35 assists and seven power play goals both led Sioux Falls. Gorowsky’s outstanding rookie season earned him numerous honors including a selection to the USHL All-Rookie Team and Sioux Falls’ Outstanding Offensive Player Award at the team’s season ending awards ceremony. His stellar performance in the 2005 USHL Prospects/All-Star game earned Gorowsky Team USHL’s MVP honor.

Gorowsky attends the University of Wisconsin.

Talent Analysis
Gorowsky is a power forward noted for his excellent play around the net, superb puck skills and his competitiveness. Gorowsky has the ability to elevate his game. The bigger the game is, the bigger he plays. He is also noted for having a great work ethic and his willingness to do whatever it takes for the betterment of his team.

Sounds like a pretty good recruit, eh? As I previously stated, IMHO, he was misused by Eaves and seeing Besse on the 4th line scares the crap out of me. It's early.....

Wisconsin has been chosen as the preseason favorite for the inaugural season of Big Ten hockey as voted on by the coaches, the conference announced on Thursday. The coaches also selected a Preseason Players to Watch list, with four Badgers leading the way.

The Badgers won 22 games last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament, finishing up its time as a member of the WCHA by capturing the 2013 WCHA Final Five. The Badgers return nine seniors and six juniors, the most upperclassmen on their roster since the 2009-10 squad that reached the 2010 NCAA Championship Game. The Badgers also return 81.3 percent of their goal scoring (91 of 112 goals) and 78.9 percent of their points (239 of 303 points) for the 2013-14 campaign.

Minnesota was voted to finish second this season, with Michigan picked for third, Michigan State and Ohio State projected to tie for fourth and Penn State rounding out the poll.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

So Gorowsky was so held back by Eaves, that once he got out from under his oppresive clutches...he never earned a paycheck (even from a bad pro league) in hockey? So no chance it was his skating was good enough at the USHL/high school level to put up good numbers, but like many guys who fail in the next steps up the hockey pyramid...it wasn't quite good enough at the next level? Does every high scoring USHL guy succeed in college? Do can't miss 5 star recruits never fail to meet expectations at the next level and is it always the coaches fault?

Please don't mistake me for an Eaves apologist, but for every Tom Gorowsky and Zach Bearson, Eaves has had 3 guys that exceed expectations. His problem is not player development, it's not getting enough high end forwards and being a wee bit to good at developing guys occasionally and losing them to the next level sooner then anticipated (and grossly uneven classes that will cycle through the program for the third time in his tenure next season).

I don't think we have a clear picture on Gorowski in the NCAA's as got to realistically play 1 full season

in years past (Sauer) guys who had high-end skill who were on the 4th line (dan plante as a frosh for example) would only be there because of the depth of high-end talent in front of them.

Not to make too big a deal out of this since they haven't played a game but I'm not liking the idea AT ALL of Besse spending any time on the 4th line. Honestly Zulinick has played what? 6 games? so why is he up on the #1 line vs. Besse? I'd throw Besse on one of the top 2 lines and let him go make something happen.

I do not agree that Eaves has had more guys exceed expectations than those who fall short. I also think player development is a problem of his in regards to F's. I do agree Eaves hasn't landed enough blue chippah F's. Hopefully he can fix the unbalanced classes and land more elite F's. There's a lot of holes to fill coming up and the talent pool is getting shallower every day.

We'll have to agree to disagree then...cause Eaves track record is argueably the best in college hockey since he arrived at UW. Which coach has more guys that ended up in the NHL during the same time (hint...it's none)? Just look at his early classes and their draft position....Earl (6th round), Joudrey (8th), Dowell (5th), Burish (8th), Pavelski (7th)....all guys that have skated in the NHL and some with a great deal of success. Now realize that guys drafted outside the top couple of rounds have extremely long odds of ever playing in the NHL, and that is a pretty good track record. That was just the forwards, now if you want to talk D...undrafted guys like Drewiske, Piskula, and Wozniewski from Eaves first teams skated shifts in the NHL. Or for giggles, we can talk about John Mitchell who washed out of no less then 3 USHL teams in 2 years before ending up in Madison as a mid-term greyshirt that turned into a pretty good college player and has actually managed to earn AHL paychecks.

Eaves problems are far far far from player development. They are unbalanced classes and often being short a high end game breaker offensive forward.

1.Bob Johnson… 3 National Championships, (367-175-23) [.677] The first coach of the Wisconsin Badgers. He turned the program into a great hockey program. He has the greatest winning percentage at the UW, and coached them to three national titles (’73, ’79, ’81).

May want to edit.....'79 was Minnesota under Herb Brooks.

quick note, Tony Granato is not the all-time leading scorer for UW, Mike Eaves is. It's possible Granato is the all-time leading goal scorer but I *think* that's Mark Johnson's record?

I'm pretty sure he's the all time leading goal scorer. I remember reading it on a wall in the Kohl Center. I think.

Pretty sure for goals:

1. Johnson
2. Eaves
3. Granato.

I looked it up in last season's fact book. [PDF] For career goals, it's Johnson, Bert DeHate, Granato, Eaves.

Zulinick is older, has more size and is more physically developed, has played both junior hockey and college hockey and did not arrive at UW with a reputation for not playing defense. I would guess Besse is being sent a message he's got to earn his way up the food chain...

Also, I think Zulinick is playing on the left side and Besse on the right where Barnes and Mersch are unlikely to be displaced from the top two lines.

Sorry to maybe redirect the conversation, but as a Sat Night ticket holder, I have to say I am a little steamed that the Minnesota series is a Thur-Fri set to help the BTN. That series is always so good, it should be a mandatory Fri-Sat series. Kind of disappointing. I would expect to see even more of this in the coming years, unfortunately. Hard to have my SatNightFever when my tickets are now for a Friday night.

While I certainly understand this, if I had to pick one of our home series to be Thursday-Friday, it would be that one. That rivalry is like an attendance insurance policy, and not just because of the Gophers fans who show up.

true on Zulinick's age but he's played 5-7 games of NCAA hockey, I wouldn't consider that aspect a huge difference in experience between he and Besse. USHL, that pushes in Morgan's favor a bit but what I saw from Grant in the MSHSL playoffs this kid is ELITE.

My main concern is this: Grant Besse is a true talent, is Eaves going to be so ****ed stubborn that he wastes a year w/this kid trying to mold him into an Eaves player when he could alternatively let him cut loose and try and teach him tips along the way vs. putting him on the 4th line immediately?

I've said this before and I'll leave room that I could be mistaken but it seems to me that w/Eaves Heatley or Granato could walk through the doors right now as frosh and despite their OBVIOUS talent Eaves would miscast them into 4th line roles to install his defense first mentality.

and I'd ask when did this start w/him? for the posters older than me who actually saw Eaves play... I mean did he play as he's asking these guys to play or did he learn this later on in the NHL?
