Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Looks great for this year...but three of those guys graduate and Kerdiles will probably be in the NHL the following year so UW will likely be breaking in 4 new centers at the same time...ugh. I guess we should all just enjoy this season, huh?

Gotta make hay while the sun shines, and if you can keep some out of the rodents' barn, all the good guys are happy.

BIG's Top 5 for the Hobey

LA Kings wanted to sign 3 college hockey players, all from the "old" WCHA. The Kings did sign DU's Nick Shore and UND's Forbot, but you got to keep Mersch. Hardly seems fair.:(

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

A whole bunch of TV dates have been released.

Here's an article specifically regarding BTN. (They also updated that awesome video so that it says "Puck Drops October 10th" instead of "coming next year.")

I don't really know how these things work, so I'll ask - what should I expect as far as filling in more TV slots, whether nationally, regionally, or locally?

Edit: From the BTN article - "At 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, prior to the season opener between Penn State and Army, BTN will air a 30-minute Big Ten Hockey Preview Show to highlight the season’s key storylines, players and matchups. " I would totally watch that if I weren't going to be in the Kohl Center at that time. I hope they'll put it online later.

Ok, so, here's the deal. Wisconsin's national TV schedule looks similar to last season. The difference is the 13 home games that were shown by Fox Sports Wisconsin & FS Wisconsin plus. Those games are produced by Wisconsin Public Television. This current schedule doesn't have any of those games right now, but It sounds like there should be some added. How many, I don't know.

I sure hope so. Fox Sports is the go-to local/regional sports network (same with CSN or others in various places). I hope they're willing to travel a bit so we get more road games, but I'd rather have more home games on TV in the remaining slots than none at all.

I'm really hoping for more road games too. One of the biggest things that had me excited about moving to the big ten was that's there would be more raid games on TV. With this initial schedule out and only one BTN ge being on the road, it's pretty disappointing.

From a more objective standpoint (and more of a bright side) - I like that hockey at the Kohl Center will be given a national audience.

Are the empty seats really good looking or something?

Honestly, the Kohl Center doesn't look like it has many empty seats for hockey even if the paid attendance is <10,000. (You can't go too much lower, obviously.) I watched the Friday game against Miami last season, and I would have guessed (based on all the games I had gone to and the announced attendances, which I look up after every game) the crowd was larger than 9,280. Red seats don't stand out that much, and on the near side, because of the angle, empty seats are blocked by fans. The same goes for highlights from 2011-12 in the lesser-attended games. Weirdly, the Friday RIT game that season looked thinner. I feel like it looks better overall than some of those eastern teams on a down year who have 2-3K in a 4-5K seat building on NBCSN.

Edit: That Friday game against CC had a disgracefully small crowd (on Bob Johnson Night no less!), but those who did show up were ridiculously loud. After my eyes and mind adjusted to all the visible red plastic, it was one of the most intense atmospheres (especially at the end) I've experienced at the Kohl Center. (For reference, that's all the men's basketball and hockey games in the past two seasons, minus some holiday games.)

I was just giving crap. You never see upper levels on TV. I've seen some season ticket holders say they've moved quite a ways toward center ice this year, which could be a bad sign.

Can't link the article (because it has a bad word in the name) but Andy Johnson sure is whining about your TV schedule. Did he really think just because there is a Big 10 Network the Badgers would be on TV more? Really? So, he was just as delusional as UND when they formed there own conference thinking they'd be on TV more?

Welcome to college hockey. On TV about as much as college softball, even less now that the Big 10 is in charge.

The B1G is a business, not a charity, and will broadcast what sells. The programs/games that bring in the highest ratings will get the most TV time. It's the same way with every sport and every network.

Correct, and the neutral zone trap just doesn't sell...

I never said it wasn't. I've been known to say that "No one watches hockey on TV". Cause they don't. That doesn't give Andy Johnson license to whine about a TV situation his athletic director caused.

It wasn't simply based on assumptions. We (badger fans) were told by a few sources, including Barry Alvarez, that the BTN had committed to at least 30-40 B1G games, but only 27 were scheduled. In regards to Wisconsin's specific tv schedule, the main reason I believe the article was written was because of the significantly fewer games scheduled to be televised this year (11) compared to last year (23). While not many expected a whole lot more games to be televised, we certainly didn't expect less. I believe the article is completely warranted and makes some very good points... hardly "whining" in my eyes.

They are broadcasting 32 games if you include the Big Ten Tourney. I can certainly see your point though, and hope the ratings for games carried this season warrants them to pick up more games moving forward.

So there's limits on what can be whined about? Good to know.

We didn't elect or appoint Barry. He was thrust upon us.

We're not responsible for what he does nor do we have to support or like what he does simply because he represents our school. We have no control over him.

In other words, we can **** and moan about him as much (or more - we have to LIVE with him) as any of the rest of you little crybabies.

So there! :p

If only I had a Nielsen box... (Or if they had free streaming like ESPN3 - I sometimes pull up those streams even if I'm watching on TV because I know it counts.)

Their promo is awesome, though.

Well, Barry lied. And frankly I'm shocked. Shocked.
