It's A Great Day For Hockey
Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC
Yes and no.
IIRC, the Coliseum is about 8,900 capacity.
The Resch Center max hockey capacity is 8785 - which is what they use for NCAA regionals or other high-demand event. (Save the cracks about the attendance at the last two regionals. Think UW vs Cornell).
In reality, the Resch cordons off the north endzone, eliminating a few thousand seats. Also, for the Gamblers, the bleachers behind each goals are turned into so-called "party pit" seating. The north end, for example, is a $25 ticket with all you can drink beer and 'free' popcorn. So, the max for most normal Gamblers games is about 6700.
The coliseum could do the same. That said, the Resch has a much steeper seating bowl than the Coliseum and, IMO, is a much better place to watch a game. Not sure how the blocking off of seats would look at Alliant.
If this does happen, I would hope that they would make efforts to promote/support hockey in the community. If they do that well, I could see it being a long-term positive from a UW hockey marketing standpoint, being another piece to the local hockey scene. I would certainly go to some games, especially when the calendar turns to the spring.
As for building size, it would be comparable to the Green Bay Gamblers in the Resch Center, wouldn't it?
Edit: Here's the link in case you have trouble finding it.
