Went to the scrimmage the last year they had it. Great time! Guys scrimmage, autographs and then the girls game afterwards. It worked out real well. It also gives those of us that don't live around Madison a chance to see both teams before the youth hockey season gets going.

Early enough to include some NHL alums?

That could be pretty darn fun. So would a rink in the stock pavilion. I've never actually been in there, but I'm pretty sure I've witnessed night-time fencing (or some other combat sport) tournaments going on through the windows. I've passed it so many times, but it's mysterious.

I lived in Sullivan freshman and sophomore years. The place has a smell, that's for sure.

The only cow smell I've noticed is from those labs to the west of the Stock Pavilion, when the wind blows eastward. Do they actually keep livestock in that building?

Not permanently. Was an Animal Science major for a year and had a few labs in there and it was empty every time they brought the animals in. The Pavilion is used to show cattle, pigs, and other livestock. They also train horses in there. The smell comes from the barn housing the cattle next door.

Joe Pavelski signs five-year, $30 million extension with San Jose.

Ryan Little signs with ECHL's Florida Everblades.

I'm itching for more details.

In due time, grasshopper. As with a lot of things, I'm restricted on what can be published and what can't. Since this isn't finalized yet, I'm limited on what I can say. Like I said, they are working on a preseason red/white scrimmage. IF it happens -- and I'd be surprised if it didn't -- I'll give you the details as soon as I'm allowed to. I will say, you're on the right track with the location being the twist....

LaBahn? Janesville? The LaCrosse center?

Not sure how a venue choice would be that big of a deal, but time will tell I guess.

Now an alumni v. current players scrimmage would be cool...

Back in 89/90, they played a scrimmage at the Beaver Dam HS with a autograph session and spaghetti dinner afterwards. The rink was packed. I have a stick with every autograph of every player and coach from that team, the eventual 1990 championship team, priceless.

I'm hoping a no check game against the gals @ LB, with Hillary Knight coming back and lacing them up for the gals. She could have played on the men's team.

In other breaking news.....numbers of the frosh....Besse 21, Cavalini 23, Soleway 22, McGuire 3

Don't know why it's not done already. Other schools have it and when you have a handful of alumni training in Madison already and three big name alumni coaching your teams it would seem pretty easy to have some sort of event. And this year would've been the most logical since it's the program's 50th anniversary! Who wouldn't want to see Eaves, Johnson, G. Suter, B. Suter, Shuchuk out on the ice playing again!

That's the kind of thing I'd like to see. A connection with the community makes it a richer experience for everyone. In the spring of 2012, there was a student appreciation dinner with the football team, and that was pretty fun. Michigan State is working hard to get that connection with the community (particularly MSU students), based on what I've seen. Of course, their program in the last few years hasn't been like it was in the '80s (not to forget that they won the national championship in 2007). I forget if it was in one of those Spartan Hockey All Access videos or something else, but I saw some video where they talked about the Spartans and some of the "A-Team" (their student section) working to strengthen those connections to the community.

fyi, juniorhockey.com has a story that USHL will be returning to Madison, with a team at the Coliseum.

USHL schedule is already announced for this year, so presumably would be for 2014-15. Now, it's waaaaay too big of a building for the USHL, but hockey competition (that sells beer) can't exactly be good news for UW.

That said, unless they've got deep pockets, I sense a struggle. (Note: the Bidwell family - ie the Arizona Cardinals - is reportedly involved, so deep pockets are a possibility). Still, as a Gamblers fan, a close road trip and rival would be good news in these parts.

College hockey and junior hockey are on two totally different levels. IMO a USHl team wouldn't take fans away from UW hockey, then again we live in Wisconsin and Wisconsinites like their beer.

Anyway I think it would be fun for another hockey team to be in the city.

If this does happen, I would hope that they would make efforts to promote/support hockey in the community. If they do that well, I could see it being a long-term positive from a UW hockey marketing standpoint, being another piece to the local hockey scene. I would certainly go to some games, especially when the calendar turns to the spring.

As for building size, it would be comparable to the Green Bay Gamblers in the Resch Center, wouldn't it?

Edit: Here's the link in case you have trouble finding it.
