Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Can't believe only McCabe made an All-WCHA team.

Mersch only T2nd in the WCHA in goals, he sucks. And while Rumpel's stats are basically on par w/ the other top goalies (besides win %) he has been the reason why UW is even still breathing this season. The offense has sucked, the PP sucks, and the dmen haven't exactly been awesome. The fact that his win % is so poor but his stats are so good says a lot to me, but I don't vote. Wilcox plays on the best team in the country, I'd hope he'd have great stats w/ that group of pukes in front of him. Stephon Williams is certainly deserving of 1st team honors for the land cows though.

If we could have placed a player named Joelandon Rumpelpeterson on the ballot we'd maybe have done better there, though I disagree with the idea that Rumps played less games and therefore should somehow be considered not as deserving. I said during MN week that I wouldn't trade Rumps for Wilcox ever, and surprisingly a goof or two agreed.

Mike Mersch should have made it IMO but there are certainly a number of good forwards in the WCHA. Bjugstad was less deserving by his numbers, but I will admit the guy has a big shot and is a presence on the ice that creates problems. I'd be curious to know where Mersch landed in the voting. 10th?

Oh wait, the LOST to PSU in what might be the biggest collective failure in the history of badger athletics.

I'm with you on everything but this. It isn't like UW got outshot 50 20 and played like crap, they did outshoot them and played decent, though not as well and the 2nd and 3rd periods the night before. What IS the biggest epic fail in UW sports evah is a discussion for the offseason (2010 title game against BC perhaps).

I don't think anything that happens from today forward will alter Eaves' future with UW, so let's just go out and enjoy the rest of the ride. Rumpel missed practice, hopefully nothing serious.

I hope the KC is over 10,000 for each game.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

3-1 Badgers. One step closer to St. Paul. Would have been nice to watch it on TV. Nice that I could watch BC/Vermont if I wanted to though.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Good win tonight. Badgers dominated most of the night, except on the pp of course. Shut out UMD pp pretty handily.

Little-Dahl-Little-- Best third line in college hockey?

I don't know but they played great tonight.

Not even 8300 tonight at kohl. Not even close to as loud as Saturday...or even Friday last weekend at the coliseum. It's time for a return to cheaper tickets and dare I say it...beer ( I know it wont happen) Best atmosphere in college hockey is in grand forks. Why? See above...that and nothing else to do in Grand Forks.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Hey older people! We sang "Total Eclipse of the Heart" tonight. You may have heard the "Turn Around"s...then only a couple people kinda sorta knew the words beyond it, but it went for a while.

The power play went back to it's same-old bad self, though it didn't seem as blatantly bad and lazy as it did earlier this year.

Nice work by the Badgers on those 2nd period goals. Early in the first, I was struck by how well UW maintained possession and kept the puck out of their end.

The officiating was blatantly bad, because there was some obvious stuff that the refs wouldn't call, despite being about 15 feet away from the play and looking right at it.

Pathetic attendance. We did what we could. But it seems like some fans forgot that we're allowed to cheer even when we didn't score a goal. It makes for a much better game day atmosphere. It did get awesome towards the end, though. Louder than at the Coliseum on Saturday, but less echo-ey-er. As you'd expect. Edit/Addition: I noticed Shawny4u wrote the exact opposite. More and louder students, but quieter old people made it unbalanced. So where I was, it sure sounded louder.

Speaking of game day atmosphere...the old farts running the Kohl Center are, well a bunch of old farts who hate happy sports fans. It's disgusting. Those at the game may have noticed students had made signs. (The markers and paper are at a table on the concourse and sponsored by Best Buy.) I understand not wanting fans to hold up signs while the puck is in play, but the Event Staff people told us we couldn't keep the posters against the glass! Keep in mind this is at waist level, and obstructing nobody's view. And the SIEVE sign. Holy moly, the SIEVE sign. Here's a picture of the specific sign that I'm talking about. First of all, even as they have it, it's not doing much to obstruct anyone's view. Secondly, they rest it on the railing during play, so it's below waist level and obstructing nobody's view. There's no logical reason to ban it, and there are obvious reasons to allow it. I was with a few people who work at the ticket office, and apparently they all hate the CSC people. We're probably the only school in the Big Ten that doesn't have giant heads for opposing free throws. It's like they want everyone to sit down and be quiet. With all the nostalgic talk of what the Coliseum was like, you'd think they'd allow more stuff.

Of all the schools hosting in the first round, they were charging the most (except for Denver's highest priced ticket). St. Cloud was offering all tickets for $12. There were at least two schools (North Dakota was one) that offered reduced prices for kids. Wisconsin kept all their pricing the same and eliminated any family packs. Administration needs to take a hard look at how bad they want big crowds for these games.

These are the same people that threatened to throw me out of the Kohl Center at a women's hockey game when I threw a hat on the ice after a Badger player got a hat trick.

That is completely comical in a bad way.

Addition: Another thing I forgot to mention -- Someone told me that the band has/had a SIEVE banner that they would hold up in the front row of the band. Apparently a CSC person once told them they couldn't hold it up because it would "obstruct the view of the patrons." "What patrons? We're the band!"

I talk about St. Cloud offering $12 tickets and they can't even draw 3,000. Everyone kind of had a low turnout tonight except for Minnesota and No Dak and they didn't have sellouts. I would assume crowd sizes will be up tomorrow night across the board.

I heard that a few thousand more tickets were already sold for tomorrow night than for tonight (for Wisconsin).

what the hell is going on at the Kohl with their dimwitted staff? Can't Alvarez get a spine and dictate that the kids and fans can bring in signs and that the only reason these old-*** grumpy fools at the KC need to make a move is when someone is holding a sign above say chest level during play (hold it over your head when everyone is standing, that should be fine)? I' mean jesus christ it's like they want a morgue in there

with regard to tonight's game I didn't get to listen in but kudos for the win. if they make it to St. Paul and win 1 there they *might* get into the tourney

They have never allowed signs in the KC, while I understand the need to not obscure the view of others (nor the TV cameras) their has to be some middle ground between the chaos of a free for all and the zero tolerance that they have now.

CC losing tonight was good, they are out of TUC status as of now, hopefully DU can finish them tomorrow. MSUM beat UNO putting them on the edge YUC precipice, another loss tomorrow and they likely go over.

The first round playoffs generally have low attendance everywhere which isn't a surprise given the fact that home ice is often not known that far in advance, that the opponent is also not known usually untill the last minute, and is normally a low interest team who finished in the bottom half.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Given the Badgers wins over UNO, wouldn't it help to have them as a TUC? Great news on DU-CC. From reading the stickied PWR thread, it sounds like if the Badgers and DU can win tonight, the team may control its destiny into the NCAA's. Even as the last team in, playing QU, I would like our chances.

If UNO falls off, it's going to be bad for the Badgers. CC falling off removed 2 losses and put our record against TUC @ 8-7-3 (.5277). That's the biggest reason Badgers moved up and now show as t14 in PWR and in the top 16. Taking our 2 wins against UNO out make us 6-7-3 (.4687) or worse off than before CC fell out. Right now siouxsports shows a UNO's RPI with a loss tonight as .4990. (TUC cliff is .5000) No doubt that is calculated as though it is the only game played though. I would imagine it's possible for UNO to lose and still remain a TUC depending on what else happens but I don't know what that entails at the moment.

Dittos to Almington's middle ground at the KC point. Seems easy enough to maintain control without being fascists!

Yes, all of the gains in last night's PWR will be lost when UNO ceases to be a TUC. Not really sure what you mean by UW controlling its own destiny (other than if UW wins the WCHA tournament, they will will qualify.) It looks like two wins in St Paul is a requirement, and may not be sufficient, especially with a good chance that the CCHA will steal another spot in the tourney.

With UNO and WI wins tonight, two more wins may not be necessary, again depending on how things shake out around the country. The main thing is, of course, for the Badgers to take care of business tonight. Hopefully the lesson of the loss to PSU pays off now as the boys had a strong performance last night and need to come back even better tonight. Ending any team's season is always a tough thing to do.

Despite the pp not looking very good, I loved the way Rammer skated around at the point looking only to shoot, and then after firing one in, got it back and did the same thing again leading to the goal. Seemed like he was thinking, "Screw this! We gotta shoot and I'm going to do it!" I really liked seeing him take charge in that situation, even better that it paid off.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Yes, that captured what I was trying to say. If UW, DU and UNO win tonight, then there is a path to the NCAA's. That's all.
