WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Honestly, my 2 younger kids prefer the LaBahn Arena and women's games over men's and the Kohl Center. I got season tickets for the women's games this year and it is a fun place to watch hockey.

And at a fraction of the cost of the men's games.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

The saturday night ticket holders totally got the shaft this season. A monday game, no minnesota, and a friday night game (can be difficult if you are traveling a distance and can't get off work early). If I didn't share tickets on saturday I would have dumped them. I live in Madison and would have just bought single game tix for the series I wanted to see, but my friend wanted to keep them, so I stuck w/ it.

I will be very interested to see how the schedule turns out next season, and see which hypothesis presented by others here may turn out true. I hope Chuck is right, but my gut tells me that fri/sat series will slowly stop being the norm.

Fri-Sat BT hockey series will all be eliminated....it will most be Sun-Mon...a couple yrs down the road this will be the normal schedule.....

Ha, not to fear, Bucky will suck all the offense out of him by the end of his freshmen year.

Wrote about attendance, Mike Eaves, class sizes, etc. tonight if anyone here that never reads our website cares.

Great write-up! thanks

my unsolicited comment would be with regard to the optimism for next season... Going into this season we heard the same thing: young exciting talent coming in (kerdiles, zulinick, and yes zulinick has been injured so I can't really judge his play based on 6-8 games) and an roster heavy on upperclassmen.

I don't know. lose Ramage and Lee and gain Besse. While Besse is great that's not a significant change in the roster of a team that's been quite underwhelming.

I do 100% agree with your assessment of the goalies. they both could be lights out next season

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Uwbadgers.com says the game is on FS Wisconsin tonight, but I don't see it in the dish network guide. Anyone know what channel it is supposed to be on?

What game is that?

You know the Badgers play Sunday-Monday, right?

What about those of us that read but don't care?

Only kidding. :D Excellent article! Everyone should read.

Although I'm generally opposed to any sort of balanced opinions on the internet, I like this article quite a lot. Good work.

EDIT: FYI- noticed typo on chart for Badgers 07-08 record. Should be 16-17-7.

I do now. :o

It's funny, with all the talk about playing games on different days of the weeks, I actually went and checked the dates....however, I just saw that they were on consecutive days, and assumed it was Friday-Saturday. Guess I should assume :)

For me, I don't mind our style. I actually enjoy frustrating the other team. But our style + not scoring, is painful. I hope you're right about next year's prediction. If they miss the tourney again next year, it might be Eaves' demise. If they make it next year, hopefully it is the start of a new trend and not just another blip on the radar.

I'm in the same boat. I like me some well executed defense, but with absolutely nothing on the other end, it's pretty rough.

Dump and chase. Ugh.

Seriously, though, Chuckandy, that was a fantastic writeup about the attendance issue. I'm with you on being hopeful for next year, but what's scary is what we've come to expect after the good seasons: a season or two (or as it is right now, three or four) of mediocrity.

Even if the forwards who have underachieve this year live up to expectations next year and stay healthy, if a D steps up to be the PP QB, and provided that team continues to play stellar defense and they compete for the B10 title next year, what happens the following year?

6 forwards graduate + McCabe and Kerdilis leave early and given trends this team could be looking at a last place finish.

After 10 seasons I have enough data to measure Eaves on his results and see ZERO reason to keep him around based on future potential at this point. Since 2005-06 we've been talking about UW's future potential and the NCAA bubble by Christmas rather then actually competing for a WCHA title far more often then not.

Over Eaves tenure, Wisconsin is the 5th most successful WCHA program:

1 [three way tie]) DU, UMN, and UND (order them however you want)
Gap based on consistancy
4.) UMD
Gap based on winning WCHA hardware
5.) UW
Gap based on winning NCAA title
6.) CC
7.) BSU
Gap based on NCAA F4 appearances
8 & 9.) SCSU & UNO
10-12) MSUM, MTU, and UAA

The issue is that UW is a post in the final seconds and an OT loss toBC on 2006 away from being nearly tied with CC and a Cornell OT goal away from being no more successful than BSU over the past decade.

Which group SHOULD UW's success be most comparable to: DU, UMN, and UND OR CC, UMD, and BSU?

Eaves has had a DECADE to show that he can get UW to a consistently elite level in the WCHA, UW's on ice results CLEARLY demonstrate that UW isn't even close to COMPETING for elite status let alone AT elite status. Why should he be given yet another chance? For me, this season was Eaves final chance to demonstrate enough improvement that he should remain as HC, and he completely failed.

I agree with all of this 1 million percent.

Unfortunately, I see nothing that tells me that Eaves' seat is even warm, let alone hot.

I think we're stuck with him for a bit.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

He's under contract until 2017. So that is 4 years to buy out, or +/ 1 million, if they want to get rid of him. I don't think it will happen, unfortunately.

Paying a four year buyout means that he would sit out coaching for the next four years, do you think Mike Eaves is willing to sit out four years to collect a buyout from Wisconsin? For sure not.
