Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Funny, the way you guys feel about continuing to play Mankato, Bemidji State, and St Cloud is pretty similar to the way a lot of Gopher fans have always felt about playing UW.

Isn't it annoying to have to play inferior programs?

I just wonder how taking this hard-line stance against playing 3/5 of the MN schools is going to effect your recruiting in Minny? You'll be playing far less games in Minnesota. Less exposure there and less chance for the parents of potential recruits to watch their kids play.

6 > 5 Who's inferior?

Jabbing aside, yes playing fewer times in and against Minnesota based opponents is a valid concern with recruiting. I suspect in the end, there is much more positive momentum for Wisconsin recruiting then the potential slight negative of losing some of the regularity of the less prestigeous Minnesota school on the schedule. Wisconsin is inching closer to opening one of the premier practice/hockey team facilities in the country this fall, Eaves track record of producing (very good) NHL players is becoming pretty hard to ignore (and the reality of a 17/18 year old mind is that they are all good enough to play in the NHL and that is their top goal), ect I also don't think travel from Minneapolis based families to Madison is all that daunting to families who have gone through the culture of travel hockey and often having had their son playing in a much farther removed USHL outpost. We were at a youth tournament this past weekend in Chicago, and their were 9 year old teams from Minnesota, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Philadelphia, & California. I know Minnesota is a little different in that the high end kids have good oppurtunities to play locally both in youth and high school moreso then other areas of the country, but there is still a significant ammount of travel in the culture of hockey there too.

In Minnesota news that matters:

Ugh. I don't like the neutral site.

Um, you are waaaaay over-selling your practice facility. You're catching up, not moving ahead. Congrats. And yes, Minnesota kids travel, but I assure you, the decreased exposure will effect your recruiting.

As for whom is the inferior program, your school lacks any history and tradition while our cup overfloweth ;)

Ugh. I don't like the neutral site.

In this sport, all Minnesota news matters. Whine about it, cry about it, but eventually everyone learns to face that fact.

I don't like <strike>selling out for more money</strike> trading a home conference game for a neutral site. If this was the HoF game I wouldn't really care (which is what the other outdoor games were)

I had heard a rumor that the Camp Randall game hadn't earned all that much profit, so I doubt we're even selling out for all that much.

I'll have to take issue w/2 things here
1. so there's a large segment of mn fans who feel uw is inferior and look toward the series as they would vs. say tech? you're joking right? 6>5 and all can't get their dander up?
2. the exposure to UW in Minnesota really only matters in TC. no-one from International Falls, Bemidji, or for that matter Bloomington, is going to decide to play hockey in madison based on UW drubbing Bemidji, Mankato, or St. Cloud. It will be based on UW's Coaches (and look at the NHL, there were almost enough UW alumni to fill an entire franchise), Facilities, and lastly UW's history and their recent records.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Some days I just have to remind myself that it is the off season and we need something (anything really) to fill posts and that it's ok to feed the stray dog even if you risk not being able to get rid of him later. Today was one of those days.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Keep in mind that youre arguing with the kind of idiot who thinks that a program with 6 titles doesn't have any history or tradition to speak of. With that in mind, it would be curious to know what you hope to accomplish here.

oh, I'm not hoping to accomplish anything really, definitely not changing anyone's mind if that's how it came across. I'm just ...bored...off-season, Blackhawks are also out...so...

No, there isn't.

He's just trying to troll and really isn't very good at it.

Most people, including his own fanbase (and women everywhere) ignore him now, so he misses the attention.

I'll say it though, I'd rather stay home than go to see Mankato, SCSU, BSU, Tech or Omaha. I think after having tickets for so many years, one can get a bit jaded. I'm the same way with my football tickets - which is why we sell most of our games now. Just can't go see us play Northern Iowa, or Indiana for that matter.

Been to way too many games. What's gonna happen that I haven't seen a hundred times?

That's why I'm actually looking forward to the new conference.

As far as the off season goes, go Brewers?

As Austin Powers would say, "Ouch, Baby, Ouch."

Yes, there is a very large component of Gopher fans who were very upset when we were placed in the same pod as UW. We would have rather been playing UND 4 games a year.

And sorry, but I don't think your program has much history (you dropped your program for nearly 30 years). What are your program's traditions? Hiring coaches with Minnesota connections? Importing Canadian and Minnesota players? Having a fanbase that largely doesn't understand the game?

Yes, you have won six titles, but you have won far less conference championships and made far less frozen fours than other schools I would consider traditional powers. I'd say your program has been lucky.

Not trying to start a fight Solo, but I do think it's comical that some in your fanbase look down on the smaller MN programs because that is exactly how I feel about the Badgers sometimes. Kinda a BLAH feeling.

Remember, I said that I'm darn glad that we appear to be keeping UND (and Denver) on our schedule. ;)
