Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Friday nights have never been good draws, even going back to the Coliseum days; Friday night football, people working late, etc. I had Saturday night tix at the Coliseum, but could always get in on Friday nights. Friday night ticket holders I knew could not get in on Saturday unless you talked to the losers on the bikes circling the building. (Those losers are probably retired in Florida about now.) I agree it will take time, but exciting hockey and WINNING cures all. (See B.Alvarez 1990..."get your season tickets now")

I was there for periods 2 and 3. It was great to be back. I like the new uni's. Student section was great. I can't wait to get 13, 14, - 15,000 in there again. It certainly was speedy, up and down hockey. BC is always fast and they weren't any faster than us. I really think they are over-rated, but that doesn't diminish what I saw from UW. Since the place was so empty I moved around, and of course had to sit behind Jurusik for a period. He really stood strong. He was square. He played short side nice. Not too many juicy rebounds. I was impressed. That "new" obstruction, interference, whatever they want to call it, is bull****. I don't want the NCAA to turn this into baseball where you time a game with a calendar.

I had fun and that's what it's all about. Now we need 4 -5 thousand more people on a regular basis.

BC fans know that voters must have based the preseason rankings on what happened last year. They clearly didn't account for all the talent BC lost.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Did you guys hear about the fire in Boston College's Hockey dorm that destroyed 20 books?

Yeah, the real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet!

Let's GO RED!!!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Yikes... That was a bad period of Badger Hockey. 50/50 pucks must be 80-90% BC, plus a heck of a lot of turnovers. Jurusic, after sleeping through the first 11 seconds, has made some nice plays to keep Bucky in it.

Regroup, settle down, play hard and confident and get this thing headed back in the right direction with 2:12 of PP to start the second. Let's go boys.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Really rough period, but an incredible goal from Cameron Hughes.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Just checking-- Are they still allowed to hit guys skating through the slot with the puck in college hockey?

I feel like maybe I missed a rule change...

Hughes--- Everyone's going to see the replay in slow-mo and it's really impressive... but in real time... That was unbelievable.

Also- Chris Brown had 2 goals in 41 gp last year. We've fed him a Hattie in two periods. Oops. :o

"Dress Up Like An Empty Seat Day" was a great success, AND Cameron Hughes scored a between-the-legs goal. Awesome!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Specifically how did Jurusik look?

I didn't think he ever looked all that comfortable. Which is easy to say when you let in a dribbler in the first 10 seconds of the game. Berry was decent after he came in though.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Is it too soon for a "Fire Oz" thread?

Defense has been atrocious.

Please don't be dense enough to believe that I actually want Oz fired. He will fix this.

I think we all knew that the D was in rough shape talent wise, I don't think anyone thought that it was quite this bad. A

Hopefully you all saw the whited out part of my post, especially the bolded part.

Outside of Greenway Oz has little to work with.

I do wonder what he can do this year (until Nyberg shows up, at least).

Oz (& Co.) will fix this because most of the problems with the defense have nothing to do with talent.

They aren't playing or covering their positions correctly. They are bunching up and leaving the back door open. They are pinching without a forward covering back. Their gap control has been terrible. They make bad decisions in our zone with the puck. They routinely give up odd man rushes by misplaying the neutral zone.

All of these guys are talented enough to play Division 1, or at least execute their position at the D-1 level.

Repeated film study and coaching will fix a lot of this.

Sure, they probably won't become a good defensive unit this season, but there's a lot of room to improve between where they are now and "good defensive unit."

Eliminating even half of the plethora of gacks that I've seen out of them so far would make a huge difference.

I'm actually pretty optimistic of what we'll see overall out of this team by January coz the offense has had the leash taken off and they look potent.

“They’ve got to play 200 feet, and there were parts of the game tonight where I don’t think they did play well in their (defensive) zone,” Badgers coach Tony Granato said. “You’re playing a good team. ... You make a mistake in your defensive end and it ends up in your net. I think they learned that lesson tonight.”

Yes, defense isn't just the two defense men. The forwards need to back check better and the whole team needs to protect the house better. Watching yesterday's game on TV, it sure seemed like the forwards like to watch the play in the defensive zone way to much. The player awareness is still weak and they need to pay better attention to where the opposing players are and not just the puck.

After a few months of practice, defense of zone play should be much better.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

I know +/- isn't a good stat to use but through 4 games:

Hughes -9
Kunin -8
Besse -8

That's a red flag for our top line.

It's not a tell-all stat, but those numbers are terrible.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

It's going to take months to get the systems and responsibilities defined and properly executed. A split with BC is a good overall result. Let's keep the record hovering around .500 til January, then make a little run with once the players get things figured out.
