Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

The whole first period was awful. They would have had 50 sog if they played the first like they played the 3rd. They need to play consistently good hockey. Whole periods of disjointedness show this team is not ready for prime time.

They had some great looks on the PP but could not equalize it.

The sue D get away with some pretty serious rubbing when a UW player dumps it in and try to get around them, that stuff needs to get called.

I liked the physical play Imamato brought to the table tonight.

I agree on the allowing too much time and space on D zone entry. Don't play scared and close up on these guys, make them move the puck.

I can understand the frustration with that not being called, but it doesn't get called and has never been called with any consistency at any level of hockey at any time.

Sure, the NHL made it an emphasis for the first few weeks of a season some years ago and then never called it again.

I used to be all "That's interference!" guy, but years of it being part of the game have led to me not even registering it anymore.

The one call on the Sue last night was weak too. Our guy just fell down.

Badgers need to adjust. When the Sue were doing that last night, a compounding factor was that we weren't coming in numbers and they would always have 2-4 guys back. As I said, they were very sound in their own end.

I love solid defense and give them kudos.

Our defense drives me nuts. Not just the d-men, the whole thing in our zone.

And also...

You know who complains about the refs a lot?

Our friends to the NW.

Don't be like them.

This. I just re-watched a bit of the first because my impression was that we weren't very good. Upon review I'd change that to say we weren't sharp with the puck but played hard. Sue dodged a few bullets there, plays that were just inches from being grade A chances that didn't result in SOG's. The way Tony wants to beat an aggressive forecheck is to turn it around and attack. What was happening a lot was the offside wing was trailing the play by way too much. We were 2 on 4 entering the zone all night and consequently giving the puck up a lot. Offside wing plus the offside D need to be way more aggressive if we're going to turn the tables and put Sue on her heels.

I'd also like to see the D just skate the puck more when the outlets are hemmed in, which will automatically create better numbers on the rush. The few times Peter and Jake took off with it created some good chances. At least 5 of 6 D are good enough with the puck to beat their man and go.

I'd say whether or not our guy just fell down, that call on Sue is made 10/10 times. Beyond that we didn't move our feet enough after the chip to get the calls. If you are really driving and they jam you into the boards you're going to get a whistle eventually. Just have to make it happen. We just need to be more confident and more aggressive tonight and we can get a W.

I'm not saying that refs don't make bad calls. They do.

Just kill it though.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

Starting that period with 4 minutes of PK and 5 D... If you told me we'd get through it with the status quo, I'd have been pretty happy. So I am.

We'll see what kind of shape the boys are in now, the intensity is only going up from here.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

Feeling pretty good about the penalty shot call. Gives us a ref excuse if things don't go well from here on in. Any excuse will do.

Only a Gopher fan would b_tch about that call and I know you're better than that.

That's the recipe right there. Pucks to the net followed by bodies to the net.

Keep it up.

It was a good call. But that doesn't mean we can't use the excuse card.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

Better execution in our own zone tonight, so that's good.

Gotta figure out a way to generate more offense though.

We have a ways to go, but still inching in the right direction.

Offense was a struggle for sure tonight. The forecheck needs to be better.

On Inamoto's penalty, isn't that contact-to-the-head call a major and misconduct? (i.e. the same way icing is a defensive zone faceoff with no line change, hooking is 2 minutes, etc...it's the rule, if I'm not mistaken.) I don't think it was really malicious or predatory (didn't look like he launched up into the opponent's head), but it's definitely something he has to avoid (and could have). That was my thought after seeing the replay. It's unfortunate, but it's not like he didn't do it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

Overall....boy oh boy wowee! I'm so happy the Dhooghe brothers got to have their first goals in the same games. Both go-ahead goals, too! If only the Badgers had stayed ahead :/

Also, maybe I just got too used to watching last year's bad-across-the-board Big Ten goaltending, but Hayton has been so valuable.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey T*M2=NCA2*7

Elbow to the head into the boards is not 5 minutes?

Your boy turning at the last second is the reason that the point of contact was the head.

No intent on the Badger's part.

I don't have a big problem with the call, but it wasn't a no-doubter.

Run along now.

Hayton seems like the keeper that will push this team to the NCAA's this year.

Having said that, I don't think they have the experience to push for a title this year, but it's going to be fun to watch them (I hope that I'm wrong though.)

Crap. I thought there was a 2 minute contact to the head penalty. Just looked in the rule book and you are right. Must be the NHL where it’s 2 minutes.
