Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

Seriously, what the **** is happening? I know the boys can recruit, but how are they getting these guys so quickly? The promise they're staying put? The recruit "momentum"? Even though there was a coaching change and the past 2 seasons were absolutely horrible, how are they getting it done?

You'd think this was a southern basketball or football team complete with chronic and hookers.

I think there is serious momentum for this team. Kids (and their parents) know the quality of coaches that are at Wisconsin now and know their connections to the next level. I can't wait to see how things come together in the coming years.

UW has an all star staff with an all star facility at an all star school. What staff is as star crossed as UW's? That makes a big impression on the young lads and their families. I also think the fact that they seem to be coming pretty aggressively at them early also helps. And momentum right now is huge. Great players want to play with great players, it only pushes you to get better in practice and they help pad your stats in games, which can accelerate/improve your standing at the next level.

I also think the recent past has ZERO bearing on recruiting now. New coaches, new outlook.

One of the interesting things is that guys like Turcotte and the Krygier boys come from NHL families. Those families clearly trust that the staff can develop talent and move their player to the next level. The other part of this I find interesting is that we are recruiting players from Michigan, the East Coast and Europe along with traditional places like Minnesota, etc. We just need a few from the West Coast and Canada to check all the boxes. I certainly did not think we were going to immediately see high end European players coming to UW.

By the way, it appears both Krygier boys now play defense based on a recent report I saw (can't remember where now or I'd link it). Just an FYI for the recruit spreadsheet.

gwhini thanks for keeping this updated.

One thing dawned on me as I looked at the latest spreadsheet. It looks like they are trying to even out the classes quite a bit moving forward. Defense is still a work in progress (numbers are too high in 18-19), but the class levels are much more even.

Like was mentioned in other thread, looks like Jason Dhooghe may commit this week. He is a forward so I would assume McGuire will be a defensemen for next year.

I would bet Sean Dhooghe does as well.

The spreadsheet is added with both Dhooghe brothers being added to the Forwards (Jason in '16-'17, Sean in '17-'18) and McGuire being moved to defense.

I asked Andy when he thinks they'll get to Madison, and he said, "Pretty safe to assume they'll come in together next fall."

Yeah. I heard that after I did it as well. I'm adjusting it.

Interesting scouting report from April, 2014. Reports on both Trent Frederic (#5 rated bantam at the time) and Sean Dhooghe (rated as #2 bantam at the time). Dhooghe was considered a major get for Ohio State, so his flip to UW certainly hurts them.
