Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

A kick in the groin, sure, but at least a somewhat comforting one. Better to know that we were still on his radar and that we can still attract his level of talent.

This was half of my thoughts. The other half was the kick-in-the-groin one.

I actually feel somewhat similar about Auston Matthews. I know Wisconsin was never a likely destination, but I found it interesting that he apparently added UW to his list of potential colleges in the middle-late part of this past season.

Never thought I'd see the day that simply being in the conversation for a player is used as a positive for UW fans.

Generally agree and this is a testament to the depth we have reached. In fairness, there is a difference in losing top prospects to competing college programs verses losing them to the CHL. In the end, no matter where they end up, top end talent not going to your school is a problem & has been a problem for several years (post Oz for dmen and arguably Eaves entire tenure with forwards).

Heard Carson Meyer (Not to be confused with Carson Mayer) either visited recently or will be visiting. Was (is?) a Dartmouth recruit. JB Bittner connection as he's a Tri City affiliate.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

What's his potential?

For reference, Carson Meyer is a 5'10", 181 pound, 97 born (will be 18 in August) RW and Asst. captain for the Ohio Blue Jackets in the U18 Tier 1 Elite Hockey League. Was the leading scorer in all of T1EHL with 21g 30a 51pts in 32gp. Dartmouth recruit for '16-'17. If he doesn't go to school this year, he would presumably play for Tri-City this upcoming season.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Recruiting Vol. XXXIV: Go pick me out a winner, Strand

I don't like the idea of poaching players...Eaves has done this at least twice thusfar and it strikes me as lazy and...scummy.

I used to think along these lines, but I don't any more, for a couple of reasons. One is that colleges are getting commitments from 15 year old (and sometimes even younger) players. I don't think a lot of 14-15 year old kids really have a clue about where they want to go to school when they are 18 or 19. The NCAA recognises that which is the reason you can't sign a LOI when you're 15. And a player is not bound until they sign regardless of what they say. (As we know) If you check with them before they sign and they are interested, why shouldn't they have the opportunity to come to UW? They certainly are going to have an opportunity to go to UND or MN or BC if they are good enough. I don't think you can sit on the sidelines and watch any other school recruit kids you'd like to have. You have to be in that game these days all the way to the end if you want to be on top. Another thing is that the CHL is recruiting kids all the way up 'til the last minute, (and probably even after.) When a kid bails to the CHL late and a top program suddenly has an open roster spot, I can't think of any good argument for keeping a kid committed to Bemidji from having an opportunity to move into that spot for UW if he can.

Like you had less of a shot to begin with versus a kid 100% going college, or?

IMO the CHL is selling a different product so the choice the kid is making isn't against playing for your school, it's choosing something else entirely. For example I don't view Dvorak going to London as a recruiting failure at all in the the way Boeser going to UND was. If Dvorak played NCAA it would have been at Wisconsin, same with Jones. They chose to pursue a completely different route and there's only so much you can do about that.

When Auston Matthews goes to Europe it'll be nice to hear that in the end he would have chosen Wisco had he gone NCAA... ugh.

It looks like those stats are for league games only. Total stats are 46g 60a 106pts. in 69gp.

Jost has eliminated Wisconsin. Down to North Dakota and Denver.

Another kick to the nuts, considering he was on the radar for over a year and the Vee's connections to WI. Do we have a shot at his team mate Dante Fabbro, (are we looking at him) or do you think he's bound for Seattle?

Fabbro was always more likely to end up at Wisconsin than Jost. From what I've heard Jost didn't have the academic pedigree that Fabbro had and may not have been able to get into UW even if he wanted to. UW still in the race for Fabbro but the new staff is going to have to play catch up. Fabbro will be NCAA bound.

Fabbro and Jost both soon to be Sioux

If Fabbro goes anywhere in ncaa other than UW and the staff had better bring in the next coming of chelios or suter cause this kid should have been a lock by now. Not to mention I'm absolutely ****ing tired of eaves losing recruits already.

Exactly. This crew has a ton of work ahead of them. And to be honest I think the well is poisoned with eaves at the helm. The recruit losses are mounting not abating and there's no chance to turn things around until they bring in stud recruits annually

Something is rotten in Denmark. If Jost can get into Denver, he should be able to get into UW. While I understand UW is a really really good school, DU is not some directional trade school.

Interesting. I thought Denver and Wisconsin were comparable academically. We all know North Dakota runs a mercenary program.

DU is a very good school, but acceptance rate is about 77% and as a private institution they can actually accept anyone they want to. Admissions at DU specifically take a "holistic" approach and I'd guess being a world class Lacrosse or Hockey player is, on it's own, given some strong consideration. Public schools generally have to apply standards more uniformly.

Not saying your wrong though. But really my understanding has been that Fabbro has been very interested in UW all along and really the fact that he and Jost are good friends and team mates is more of what connected Jost to UW than anything Jost has done or said. I think we were really just hoping to somehow manage to steal a big extra bonus there. Always thought it was a bit of a long shot with Jost. Too bad though, kid is a great player from what I've seen of him.
