Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

I felt bad for you guys. You deserved to win, and that ticky tack holding call was egregious. Bad puck luck with two crossbars and a number of shots that hit Hicks when he couldn't see the puck. Denzheimer is terrific and I can't believe he is undrafted. I also can't believe you guys were a bubble team after the run you put together to get to last night.

He’s a DU alum?? I think he played for Gwoz

Damn good period. Zelenov and Montgomery are lethal and man has Osburn really grown over the year. He looks like Tom Gilbert and Brendan Smith now.
Colby Cohen. He was on the 2009 Boston University NC team. He scored the winning goal in OT vs. Miami.

Denver had 5 shots going into the 3rd. #Pain. And that crossbar. #MorePain. Hockey can be a cruel, cruel sport.

I’ll say it, fuck Denver. Wisconsin was the better team ALL night from the puck drop. And it wasn’t close at all.
They were certainly the better team for the first 50 minutes. When the shots were 25-6 and Wisconsin only led 1-0 I had a feeling they were kinda in trouble.

I like the DU program (I’m located in CO, so if I want to watch NCAA hockey that’s where I am) but I don’t like the David vs Gollilath narrative I’ve seen a bit of since the game. DU is a blue blood program, and I don’t buy it when it is spun that teams like Michigan and Wisconsin have resources that aren’t available to them.

Happy I went out to Vegas but my God my late 30s do not play well with 4 flights in 40 or so hours, including a redeye.

Really proud of the team but the loss stings. I was a wreck during the game and really felt we needed 2 at least. Overall great season. I think Hauser played as well as we could expect and I am hopeful he continues to build on this year. I do not recall a badger team that limited shots to that degree over a 4 game span. Without looking, I would expect that was one of the best shot reduction efforts in NCAA history . Denver did a great job limiting good shots down the stretch. Refs were bad and I feel that is true even without my badger glasses on. There was an ice that was missed (or at least appeared to watching live) and you could hear Hastings throughout the stadium. Backchecking penalty was terrible and didn't look like it should ever be called, let alone the way the game was called and certainly at that time in the game.

The stadium was great. I bought tickets relatively blind (was walking after pulling the trigger on plane tickets) and we ended up 10 rows up from the redline. Meeting other team fans wishing us well was fun, I am not sure I would be cheering for Michigan or certainly would not make a display of it :) I certainly cheer for the teams with the fewest NCAA championships when they are in. First championship game I have been at since 1997 in MKE (and 1993).

I wish more of the band was there and that they could play more. I remember much more back and forth between bands at other regionals/finals in the past and feel it really adds to the environment.

Wisconsin fans were the majority but I think most of the fans without a team were pulling for Denver.

I’m proud of the team this year. I was really worried and questioning things in January. They found their footing and the future is bright. If we can keep everyone and find some finishers. Center is super solid with three freshman and one sophomore.

Didn't have a chance to post about the game as we were on vacation and Sunday was a travel day.

We were playing with house money until Saturday but once you're there, I want them to get it done.

Saw the first period in our hotel room and then streamed the third while in our seats waiting for our concert to start. Looks like the lack of finish was the main culprit. I don't like Hauser's lack of rebound control on their first goal but we probably weren't gonna win 1-0 and he played well all tourney.

Was a bummer for sure and the last natty that we were on vaca for was the hoops team losing to Duke. Don't be in a championship game when the Gurths are on vacation I guess.

Great season and a fun ride here at the end, but it stings.

The last thing the world needed was another DU hockey title but at least it wasn't Michigan.

The program is in great hands moving forward.

Back and settled in from Vegas. So, so, so proud of this team and the way they have played. This was an excellent team and maybe was the best of the 4 teams in the frozen four if you just look at how they play and execute. They were the better team in the final and just had some bad puck luck (just missed rebounds, barely disrupted passes, posts, etc) with a small assist from the refs that made it more difficult to get that equalizer late. I am in no way saying the refs lost it for them, but it is not out of line to say they absolutely impacted the game, both with no calls and that atrocious hold call on the back check on Montgomery. They battled hard and Hauser was a wall back there. Badger hockey is in very, very good hands with our short king in net, lol.

Im with Bigus on the too many men. I have never, ever seen that. Denver made a very late change, and then another delay, and they still have 6. The ref needed to drop the puck and ring them up if they cant do basic math/player replacement. The fact that they either asked them many times "Are you sure you are set" or flat out told them they had 6 players and get one off is atrocious. That was easily 30 seconds or more after the stoppage which is well after the line where the rules dictate they should be getting guys set for the face off and dropping the puck. Not saying we would have put one in in the last 2 with 6 on 4, but it would have been fun to be given that chance that Denver tried desparately to give them without the zebra assist.

The future is very, very bright, and we will see them back in the frozen four very soon. I think there is a decent chance Finley stays. Isles arent exactly hurting for personnel, and were in the mix for the playoffs till the end, so I dont know that I see him making the big club anytime soon. Maybe they want to get him in and start him moving forward so that he can make the big club and be a contributor, depends on what the scouts see in him I suppose, but I think if its left to Finley, he wants to come back to finish the job next year in DC rather than spend a season or two potentially in the AHL.

Finally, my kid was devastated after the loss, they really wanted to see the win. Had to coax them out of the room rather than hole up, but they got to a better headspace as a result. The cool part was I think this frozen four really transformed how big of a badger fan they were. They have always cheered for Bucky and care, but I think a switch flipped this year/at the frozen four and they deeply cared about the results. Losses are tough, especially in the natty game, but seeing them/being there for them just makes times when you see them win the natty that much better/sweeter/joyful. They have grown up watching a lot of very bad Badger teams and some okay but under achieving ones, and outside of maybe the 2021 covid year, this was maybe the best of the teams (this team was probably better overall, but 2021 had by far the best player in the country, which helped them a lot), and because it wasnt covid, they actually got to see them play.

Some very interesting discussions happening regarding University President, Chancellor and Athletic Director vacancies.

It’s very important imo that the U makes these hires top down.

I feel bad for the coaches not named Hastings and Johnson as they must feel a bit uneasy with the future.

We’ll likely never know Why McIntosh stepped away…some have speculated frustration with NIL/fund raising, others have discussed his tie to Fickell and if football fails both would be out after the season.

Irrespective of the reason, the U is faced with a tall task. It’s generally understood that Jen Mnookin didn’t understand the importance of sports and she wasn’t keen on showing up at those events. This comes from a couple of people I know who are boosters with deep pockets.

That reality must have made it more difficult for Mac to fundraise as there was not a unity of purpose/direction. Ideally, they would find a President and Chancellor who understand that yes, roughly $5 billion in medical/science money is critically important, but sports roughly $200-220 million?) are also very important and success is paramount.

I guess what I’m saying is Donna Shalala was an excellent Chancellor who understood the importance of both academics AND Sports and the U benefitted greatly from that (hockey comments from Alvarez aside). I hope they can find someone like Shalala and get the right AD and they will align.

Some have speculated the Idaho AD would be a good choice for UW AD.

Mac got way too far behind on the NIL, which put football into a huge deficit. This last year neither he or his mouthpiece Ted Kellnor would come out and say what exactly the plan was to narrow the NIL deficit - and everything they said applied to football only. They did not say how NIL would be used to bolster men's or women's BB or hockey or volleyball. I'm glad he's gone and the new AD must understand that other sports exist besides football.

Hicks also flinched at some high shots.

You being at the games spared you from the horrible color commentating. They said a couple times UW seemed to be shooting high a lot, like it was a planned thing. Did you notice that in person?

Call me crazy but I would give Mark Murphy a call. He may not want the job, but did a ton to get the Titletown District going, and I think people like him. AD roll is heading toward more towards running a professional team, At least he may be able to get the athletes coffers headed in a better direction.

Good thought, and man would that fire up the fans!!

I feel like you guys are seeing flinching when all it is them going down for a shot, trying to be in the way. I see this all the time with young goalies (actually flinching), and have been watching for it with Hauser (and would have seen it with Hicks) and have never seen that before and havent seen it since it was pointed out.

Its hard to say live, you dont have the same benefit of copious replays at every stoppage, etc. Im guessing they saw something on film for Hicks that he is beatable high. Zelenov sniped one high on him. Finley had him beat but hit the crossbar squarely. It makes sense cause Hicks is listed at 5'10", so when he goes down in the butterfly, there is space above his shoulders. If that was their primary target, makes sense they would miss the net a bunch high, cause your accuracy window moves above the net, and also, you are looking to hit where the high holes are and a million things go into how accurate your shot is, especially most of these guys who are not going to be elite level NHL players.
