Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

They had a great year and gave it a great effort. Proud of the Badgers. They've got to find people who can finish. I'm not sure what's up with Finley or Fitzgerald. Nothing from them in Vegas.

I’ll say it, fuck Denver. Wisconsin was the better team ALL night from the puck drop. And it wasn’t close at all.

The refs sucked all weekend too.

But…on the bright side. Wisconsin has a bright future ahead of them with Hastings at the helm. Sooner or later he’s winning a title or two and I believe next year will be THE YEAR.

Hell of a game. Great effort and Intensity. They were ready. Just didnt happen tonight.

Feel for the seniors, that they didn't win it. But they sure as f@ck ignited the turnaround and the fan base. This run will ignite it. Thanks to them and Hastings for bringing Badger hockey back. 🙏🙏

On that note that ref is a sack of crap. Seriously that wasn't a penalty or even close to one you can't call that with 4 minutes left in the game. They let them play all game and call a nothing burger. Dude should be booted from college hockey and sent to the Moosejaw fighting league. Its not why the badgers lost. But that is a horrible decision by someone who is supposed to be the best at making these decisions.

Go badgers looking forward to next year. Next project is to fix the band please

I don't think I've ever seen a ref bail a team out of a too many men penalty like they did Denver with 2 left tonight. Still, well played boys and let's go harder next year.

Upon further reflection….Forgetting the month with injuries I believe Wisconsin was the best team
In the country and they proved it in the tournament. They vastly outplayed Nodak and Denver. I haven’t seen that type of puck possession dominance in the offensive zone since 2005-2006 where Wisconsin would pressure the opposing team and even have line changes while
Maintaining possession in the o-zone.

Morrisey, Montgomery, Zelenov, Deering, Brink, Idgan (hopefully), Pietela, Hensler, Osburn, Phelan, Knox, Palodichuk, Hauser, Schulz…that’s a hell of a nucleus for the future!!!!

What we saw was incredible last night. No WTF's. None. Zippo. Nada. They answered the call and then some. The first 2 periods were defensive perfection against an elite opponent (third wasn't terrible either by any means). I still can't believe what I saw. The puck just didn't go in offensively. It just sucks the gwg was a puck Hauser never saw and no skater saw it to block it.

It turns out that Dartmouth wasn't really that bad, but the Badgers were really that good. I can't be any more excited for the next season than I am right now. The blueprint is there. We saw it. It works. Its a thing of beauty. Now let's it's play that way for whole season boys. The bar is set high.

The broadcast itself was absolutely horrendous. 90 percent pro DU. It was like Wisconsin wasn't even on the ice. Wisconsin was pretty much disrespected. That pisses me off.

Incredibly proud of the way this team played over the past couple weeks. If the Frosh class can take the next step and we can expect this type of effort on defense then the future is bright.

Some thoughts from this great tournament run:

  • The back check and fore check were outstanding - there were times when it seemed like there were 6 Badgers on the ice.
  • The breakouts from the defense (with support from the forwards) was as good as I've seen. No panic, no whipping the puck blindly up the boards to try and clear it, good tape-to-tape passes. One thing I noticed is that the D-men that got the puck under the red line were really effective at using the cage to wall off fore checkers and stay away from forwards pinching down the walls.
  • For long stretches Osburn looked like the best player on the ice - glimpses of Brian Rafalski.
  • I'm assuming Finley leaves but I'm hoping Palodichuk stays. The defense will be loaded next year if everyone that has eligibility comes back - Knox and Phelan really stepped up over the past month.
  • Really happy for Hauser - outstanding over the past four games.
  • Hastings and his staff confirmed to me that they are exactly what Wisconsin needed. To watch Bucky dominate long stretches against teams with more high end talent that past couple of weeks was refreshing - now we just need some guys who can finish in tight spaces on a more consistent basis.
  • I hope that Idzan doesn't transfer, he has a lot of skill and if he leaves I fear he'll end up pulling a Stramel and will come back to haunt us. Being a healthy scratch over the past month or so has to sting.
  • Kudos to Denver for finding a way to win two games when getting outshot 83-51. They got dominated for long stretches in both games but found a way to get it done behind some great goaltending.

Normally, I’m the type of person that gets upset after a loss and nitpicks every little thing that could have changed the outcome. It’s really hard to be anything but proud of this Wisconsin hockey team. They were dead in the water at the end of January, with 6 straight losses and a lot of injuries to key players. They rallied the troops, won enough games to make the tournament, and went on a run to the championship game that I didn’t see coming. They looked like the much better team in every game they played in the NCAA tournament. Didn’t win the championship, but they laid the foundation down and set the standard for Wisconsin hockey moving forward.
