Radio crew ran some interesting numbers in the post game show.
Wisconsin has scored 2 or fewer goals in 20 games this year. Their record is 1-17-2 in those games.
Our goaltenders have the worst save percentage in the conference and one of the worst in all of D1 hockey.
Pretty much reiterates what was said here that depth scoring and goaltender quality needs improvement.
Was Cujo going to stop any of those goals last night? I don't think so. Maybe he should have poke checked the last one. Losing Laatsch 12 games /Schulz 9 games / Palodichuck 9 games and replacing them with Phelan/Knox/Horbach is an impossible task. Hensler missed 5 games and Kehrer 2. And on top of it Dexheimer had bad lapses that he never should have had that cost them.
Goal scoring. Losing Lucius was big, but he missed the whole first half of the season anyway and then when he came back he didn't do much, 7 pts in 14 games. He was a good fit here. Whitelaw had 14 points in 31 games, about the same as he had with us last year. Stange had 27 pts and Urdahl 19 and they missed 3 games total for UNO. They were replaced with transfers Mosley 35 pts, Kukkonen 17 pts, Laskosky 9 Pts. Fr Morrissey 22 pts, Botterill 7 pts, Mehlenbacher 4 pts. Pietila 2 pts, Buss 0 pts. You could say Mosley replaced Lucius and Kukkonen replaced Whitelaw. I can by that. The problem is no one replaced Stile 32pts , MdSP 27 pts, or Bantle 19 pts. I would have liked to see Stange and Udahl stay that could have filled some of that loss. Then you didn't need Laskosky and Buss. That's a bad trade there.
Who underperformed? Jr's Fitzgerald 15 pts Dyck 12 pts, Tassy 10 pts. Laskosky. Dyck just doesn't have it. Laskosky was a bust averaged over a pt a game at RIT. .36 this year. Tassy's pts/game are half of last year. Fitzgerlad's pts/game was half of his fr year. I was expecting more out of Botterill as well, but him being a Fr I'll let that go and hope for the better. Pietila was skating penalty.
They had 5 holes to fill at F and only 3 guys stepped up, 3 guys regressed, 1 guy went nowhere and one was a bust. If Fitz, Tassy and Laskosky just played up to their best previous numbers, it's a different story.
Scarfone was not McClennan, but he was good enough. Gramme fell off the face of the earth apparently or they would have played him. Castro may not be an every day D1 player.
Obviously the coaches could not have planned for the regressions/busts at F and the D injuries. In the end it was a mess. The O could not overcome the bad D and the D could not overcome the bad O. When you can't hang your hat on either phase of the game, you are screwed.
