Wisconsin Hockey 22-23 Empty Dreams & Empty Seats

For a reference point, MI Tech beat Lakeland 6-0, outshot them 47-15.

CHN has the WI recruiting class ranked 6th.

That's a perfect reference point and probably not a good sign for at least the opening weeks. The Badgers will need to improve quickly to not get in a huge hole with the tough opening schedule.

Yep. If Wisconsin was well coached with good players, they would have clocked Lakeland 12-2 and put up 60 sog.

this is going to be a nightmare year.

on the upside I’m not going to one game nor buying Btn+ to watch this dumpster fire.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's perspectives win or lose after this weekend's series. I'm going to miss part of the men's games as whoever did the scheduling didn't seem to take into account the women's and men's games overlapping!

One of the unique aspects of college hockey is different goals in the minds of each player. For some, NCAA D-I will be the pinnacle of their career. They get a four (or five) year scholarship to play hockey and go to school pretty much for free. Then they will fool around in the ECHL for a couple years and eventually get a real job.

For others, from the day they step on campus, they are already counting the days until they leave and move on to the NHL/AHL. They go to just enough classes to keep their grades at a passing level and as soon as their "advisor" calls with the NHL contract and/or signing bonus, they are gone. Players can have all the talent in the world, but if they are already looking ahead to the next level, they'll never provide their maximum value in the present or gel as a team. If talent on paper won national titles, Michigan would have been handed the 2022 National Championship in October 2021. SEVEN first round picks on the roster and they couldn't even get to the championship game, much less win it all. Yes, they made it to the Frozen Four but looked like an average team at best and far underperformed their potential.

This is where the coaching aspect is huge in college. You need to have someone leading the team that understands the mindsets of ALL the players and how they can differ to get them to all give maximum effort. Michigan Tech had a similar disaster in the late 1990s to what I see WI going through now. We lost Coach Bob Mancini who took a better opportunity and replaced him with Tim Watters - long time NHL veteran, NHL assistant coaching experience. He took a team that finished mid-pack in the old WCHA with overall records around 0.500 (acceptable for MTU back then) and turned them into the doormats of the WCHA winning a total of 38 games over 4+ seasons (replaced early in season 5). It started a 15 year run of horrible hockey at Tech which ended with three consecutive seasons of six, five and four total wins respectively.

If you can't recruit talent to campus AND maximize the talent of the players you do land, you can't win in college hockey. Plenty of teams have managed to win titles with collections of older 2nd and 3rd line players simply because the coaches got everything possible out of them and they beat teams who had far more talent/potential on paper.

This is the disappointing part...I really want to spend my money and time on these things for entertainment in winter, but it absolutely has not been worth it for awhile now and been painful to watch Granato teams (Caufield/Holloway year excluded).

WI needs a split at minimum as conventional wisdom says UW and OSU are on par, so a split would be ok on the road. They lost last weekend to a Canadian team that Tech crushed. My confidence is at ZERO. I will root for them to win, but I see OSU sweeping.

Looks like no TV in WI for the series and I will be attending the women's games, so I won't be listening the games either. The fact that the B18 can't televise these games on one of their alternate channels is a joke.

Yep. I want to go and we have 6 tickets center ice lower bowl about 18 rows up but I have no desire to watch a team that plays with no heart/desire and has 0 chance to get to the NCAA’s.

Actually both of this weekends OSU/UW games are on the BTN+ schedule. Perhaps you can watch them on your phone while at the women's games?

BU had a less than successful head coach the past four seasons and after his first two seasons I compiled the coaching records of every DI head coach since WWII. When comparing said coaching records almost every successful coach had some level of success in his first four seasons, with Coach Berenson being the outlier, with a barely winning record his fourth season. Times have changed but overall I think four seasons is enough time to determine if a coach will be truly successful.

Fun fact: Sandelin had a losing record at UMD 6 of his first 8 seasons; took him 11 to win a NCAA championship. Not excusing Granato, just saying the road to success is sometimes a long one.

His run of success correlates closely to the B16 hockey conference starting. I think there was a 2 year overlap.
Coach Sandelin was able to take UMD to the WCHA semifinals in his third season (2002--03; 0.583%) and to both the WCHA semifinals and Frozen Flour in his fourth season (2003-04; 0.667%). He then suffered four losing seasons before winning the WCHA tournament and making the NCAAs in 2008-09 and he won the NCAAs in 2011, both several seasons before the formation of the Big Ten hockey conference. His postseason success did improve after the split, although a regular season title is still missing from his resume.

Here are the cumulative records for Coaches Johnson, York (at Clarkson, BC and BG), Sandelin, Granato and Berenson after four seasons:

As can be seen, Coach Johnson had already shown he could coach, while Coach York did his best with Bowling Green his first four seasons. Coach Johnson has maintained his overall record and has made another NCAA tournament, while Coach York has improved his records at all thee schools and won his NCAA title at BG. Meanwhile, Coach Berenson has continued to improve his overall record, while Coach Sandelin, in the middle of his four straight losing seasons has backslide to the bottom and Coach Granato has remained flat. In reality Coach Granato improved his cumulative record before having it drop again last season. The season-to-season changes can be seen in the following graph:

Coaching6Season.png

As can be seen, Coach Granato's cumulative record has decreased every season except for the 2020-21, when it went up slightly. In comparison, Coach Berenson's record has slowly improved and is about to rapidly improve, while Coach York's records at BG and BC have strongly improved, while his record at Clarkson dipped, but then improved. It's possible that with more time Coach Granato could have better results like Coach Sandelin did, but of 82 coaches with a losing cumulative record after 6 seasons who coached for at least another season just 14 ended with a winning record or currently have a winning record:

Of course, beyond just the wins and losses is how a team plays for a coach. It was only one game, but the difference in the way BU played Saturday night compared to every game last season was encouraging. I'm looking forward to seeing how the team plays over the next several months, unlike last season. I hope that soon you will likewise be looking forward to watching Wisconsin play.

Actually both of this weekends OSU/UW games are on the BTN+ schedule. Perhaps you can watch them on your phone while at the women's games?

The website didn't have anything listed for TV, but it does list b1plus in another spot, which I would call TV since I would cast it to my TV, so I missed that. It's great it is available. I will be too engrossed in the live game to watch on the phone.

I appreciate the very thoughtful and objective analysis. Thanks for sharing that.

Wow, that is a lot of data and good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Please pass this on to Chris McIntosh, AD, Wisconsin.....Actually he could have used it this past off-season.

The website didn't have anything listed for TV, but it does list b1plus in another spot, which I would call TV since I would cast it to my TV, so I missed that. It's great it is available. I will be too engrossed in the live game to watch on the phone.
When both the men & women are playing at the same time I cast the one I'm not at to my phone. I use earbuds to hear the play by play and turn my attention to the phone to watch the replay when there's a big play or goal.

Wow, that is a lot of data and good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Please pass this on to Chris McIntosh, AD, Wisconsin.....Actually he could have used it this past off-season.

Ya no shit what an asshole. McIntosh and King just don't give a f*ck.

I hope that everyone here will email the incompetent Jason King after each and every series. He gets the emails and he responds. Don't know why he has a job still... but I would encourage you all to express to him in an email what you think about Wisconsin Hockey. Every week. Whether it is good or bad or in between. Just venting on here is worthless.
