Wisconsin Badgers 2026 Offseason

People need to relax on the Cournoyer/Hauser stuff. It was not that long ago that a ton of people were saying we need a bigger goaltender because all you have to do to score on Hauser is shoot high…
Concur. The amount of BS on X and FB saying how this is a stab in the back to Hauser have zero understanding of how important G pipelines are for sustained success in NCAA D1 hockey.

Agreed on the goalie comments. This is pretty normal stuff. Each team wants to have at the very very least a reliable back-up, if not a 1a and 1b.

If memory serves Wisconsin landed Curtis Joseph AND Duane Derksen in the same class. Coaches want the competition AND a back-up plan if someone gets injured or bolts early.

If this kid from Cornell is as good or better than Hauser it only makes the team better and makes Hauser better through competition as well.

Hopefully they can become goalie U again!!!

Yes indeed Cujo and Duane were both in the same recruiting class. It is crazy about the internet reaction. This is kind a funny situation for me personally. I hate goalie tandems. I like a clear #1. I HATE goalie drama. They only play 2 games a week, you really don't need to rest a guy for a weekend, but in this very fluid roster time we live in, you need insurance. Plus the last 2 seasons Hauser has been not able to play at times due to injury. If Hauser had not missed any games, I'd be a bit more scratching my head. Hauser in 22, is he going to want to be in college until he is 25? Cournoyer is 20. Cournoyer said in an interview he's looking forward to playing with his goalie partner Hauser next year and competing with him, so clearly he knows Hauser isn't going anywhere. If you got the chance to play at UW instead of an Ivy team, even if it meant you may play less, you'd be a fool not to dump the Ivy school. The B6 is the best conference in the country, so as a goalie it will help you develop more. I trust Hastings will make the right moves on goal to have UW win the B6 and therefore another shot at a Natty.

Looks like you’re back to your interfering scumbag poaching NIL tactics like when you stole Qpac player years ago. You will still never win another natty. You just stole two ELITE players from the ECAC.
Are you talking about Smilanic, who played a whole 14 games at Wisconsin with 1 goal and 1 assist. Boy, that was a big time steal of a big time player. HAHA

If I remember correctly, and I certainly am not making fun of it, but I believe Smilanic battled some pretty serious ongoing depression through his college career.

Hopefully he was able to find the care he needed. Some things are more important than hockey.

Edit: After follow up, it looks like he even had to step away indefinately from the Habs ECHL team in 24. Hope he is doing better.

Who do you want to replace Oliver???? I have an interesting candidate; Brad Frost, the former rodent women's coach. From a coaching standpoint, is his massive experience coaching women translatable to the men's game?

I hope that we go with a young up and comer who hits the trail and is a great recruiter. A couple names that come up for me are Josh St. Clair (Muskegon Lumberjacks) and Evan Dixon (Dubuque Fighting Saints). Im sure there will be a number of great young candidates. Admittedly, I also have a small bias for Dixon. Lol

On a side note, I wonder if the ability to recruit the Canadian Jr kids could bring some young Canadian coaches into the fold. Also, has there been a job posting yet? I havent come across it.

This is a great idea! You could build a team entirely of Canadians and win a Natty. Not that I want that, but there's more talent north of the border than south.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I do feel like recruiting has started to trend more American/European. FWIW Compton and Cournoyer are Canadian, and Tulk and Hauser are within this years freshman class. But no current commits are Canadian.

While id love an entire team made up of Wisconsin kids to win the natty its not going to happen. So, with that being said, the larger footprint you can cover with your coachingbstaff the better we are going to be. So much is about relationships, who do you know.

2 things that pealed my interest that I haven't really thought to bring up but crossed my mind: Buckberger and Skahan.

Buckberger is the one who takes the game winning shot with the tip G. Wish he woulda stuck with the Badgers.

Skahan flips on signing day to BC, does nothing over 2 yrs and now he is at Mankato.

2 top Badger recruits that were committed, wildly difft paths....all got scared bc of Granato being canned.

There's been nothing on the new assistant coach and no portal entries. While I am happy about the portals (indicating a tight group, which is great), they need to have one less goalie to meet roster limits. On the new assistant coach, I am not seeing anything anywhere. I even messaged Milewski and got crickets. I am really curious what direction they go.

I can't wait for 10/2026. First time I can say that in a while.....

Is he rumored to Be interested?

I have to say if he were interested it would be an ideal scenario in some ways because I don’t think he’s has ambitions to be an NHL coach?

He’s obviously very well respected. My only question would be, is he capable of teaching?

A lot of times (perhaps most?) star players don’t make good coaches because the game came so easy to them they don’t know how to teach it. That’s why I think guys like Mike Hastings, Don Granato and others who were closer to 3rd line wingers or d-men make better coaches as they have to think the game differently and can explain it better to kids.

The issue I see with all the Pavs for assistant coach talk is two fold:

1) As has been mentioned, is he actually interested in it? Its a big time and travel commitment as several have mentioned and does he genuinely want that right now.

2) Are we equating him coaching his son's AAA team with the caps to being a successful D1 full time assistant coach? Ive seen him at Cap Ice at practices when my kid has practice after, and he commands the ice with a bunch of 15 year old kids, but will that fully translate to the D1 level. That seems like a leap to say the least. Im sure he would do a great job actually coaching the forwards, but the position is more than just what you do with the kids you have, and he has zero recruiting pipeline connections, and the only real pull he would bring to the table on day one is Im Joe Pavelski, which here I know carries a lot of weight, but if you show up to a Kid's living room in British Columbia, is the same weight there? I feel like they are better off hiring an assistant that has some recruiting lines (someone looking to slide up the ladder and eventually be head coach somewhere) and use Pavs as a consultant/guest coach.

If Pavs wants to eventually coach at UW, he will, but Id be surprised if that is his aspiration right now.

The goalie pick up from Cornell is an odd choice, especially cause league to league transfers can be very unpredictable. He had good numbers at Cornell, but will that translate to the competition in the B10? We haven't had the best luck with goalie transfers in the past, so I'm skeptical this is going to work out well (say this as someone who has not seen this guy play a game, so I have no visual assessment on how he looks in net). I have to think the starting job is Hauser's, but he will have to earn it, and genuine competition is a good thing for both guys development and elevation of the game, plus having a guy to take over if you get hurt or sick that you know has it would be good. I dont really think Hauser is taking this as a slight or slap in the face, but is using it as motivation to push himself and to ensure he keeps the starting job. You dont get to be a high level goalie that starts at a major program by being a quitter or running from a challenge/adversity. Im surprised Pulver hasnt jumped back in the portal yet, unless he is content to just ride out the rest of his time and get a UW degree cause he has tried to land a starting job at several places and has not gotten it yet.

Randomly was taking a look at GPL's portal tracker and they have Pulver in the portal. Haven't seen it anywhere else though.

Also saw yesterday Finley either just had or is going to have shoulder surgery. Maybe a result of the Martone hit in Worcester? That was a brutal hit and he seemed shaken up afterwards despite getting right back on the ice.
