Wisconsin Badgers 2026 Offseason

There's going to have to be some turnover on Forward and D to bring in additional guys. D they lose 2, gain Stout, so someone else must be leaving. Forward bringing in 6, losing 5 without Finley, so there will likely be additional turnover if Poirier is coming....

Sadly fear it could correspond with Palodichuk leaving. Like the two guys coming though.

Good thing about the 2 guys coming in they were both Freshman. So we could get 3 years of them here. Compton was a USHL defenseman of the year finalist with Osburn.
Obviously 1 defensemen has to go between Osburn, Hensler, Palodichuk, Phelan, Schulz, Knox. As long as only 1 of those leave I really like our D next year

I’d love
Hensler - Schulz
Osburn - Palodichuk
Compton - Phelan
Stout - Knox
I'd love six Luke Osburns... Truly, even if Palodichuk goes, it's hard not to like where we're trending in that regard. Phelan and Knox obviously played crucial minutes in the absence of Hensler and Schulz, and getting those guys back will be huge. Especially with Compton coming in, it will be nice to have a strong six on D to support a younger core up front, as some adjust to NCAA play and others further develop. Also am very excited to see Hauser continue to get better, he's shown he has it and more.

Analysis of the incoming F's.

Wooten 35g 27a 61 gp - ranks 8th in total points and 3rd in goals in the USHL
Solomon 24g 29a 54 gp - ranks 27th in total points
Oppana 15g 29a 58 gp - ranks 47th in total points
Uhlenkamp 19g 21a 53 gp
Zajic 11g 12 a 54 gp
Jette 8g 11a 16 gp (had 24 pts on 59gp the year before). Projected pts based on 54 gp is 36 pts.

Wooten seems to be the gem of the class. They are all USHL guys.

There is chatter about being able to finish around the net, but all the teams UW played in the NCAA all had issues finishing. :);)We might even believe that of the 4 teams UW played, UW would rank 5th in scoring talent. Look at the UW women....Full of Olympians and the best player on the planet, but the FF was a struggle to score. It's hard to score in the playoffs, so play lock down D and let the goals come as they do.

I'm expecting a huge jump for Tulk. 7g and 17a is disappointing, but maybe I expected too much, but he had 100 pts for Calgary the year before and 80 the year before that. He only took 65 shots last year. He was outshot by 6 other F including Botterill and Deering, which is quite shocking. Morrissey only took 54 shots. Conversely, Morrissey was 1st in A and Tulk 3rd. Looks like Wooten likes to shoot thankfully. There's a lot to be excited about with Montgomery, Izdan and Zelenoff too.

Goaltending.....Hauser lead them to the promised land. He played impeccably in the NCAA's. Maybe he's fully healthy finally. Is he injury prone? I'm not sure but is Pulver good enough to play 8 games and go 5-3? I'm not sure. Hastings recruited him to Kato, we can't discount his eye for talent. Castro, well, yeah....Eli Winters is set to arrive in 27. With the U17's, he's 9-16 with a 4.85ga and .859 save %. That does not appear to be very good, but maybe the U17's play games over their heads? I have no clue. My gut says they need to bring a portal guy in.

The D as constructed now is in great shape.

My goalie rundown take, in response:
-Staff clearly believes that Hauser is the guy long term, hopefully a healthy summer this year can make a big difference.
-Pulver is a curious case because at times this season he was quite frankly just as good as Hauser. His first series at MSU, along with his last series against Mich in February, were nothing short of fantastic. Everything in between was mediocre to bad. If he can be more consistent he's good enough be a true tandem with Hauser.
-I'm not sure that Castro is anything more than a third string at this point, seeing as he didn't play this year.
-Winters is interesting. He's 6-3, which is a nice thing to see after the run of smaller goalies recently. And while the save % is bad, I think that's kinda typical for the U17 team (and he had a better % than the other guy on the team). Looking back through previous years, U17 goalies usually sit around like .880-.890 if the team is decent or like .840-.860 if the team isn't so great. Those goalies can tend to make big statistical leaps in the next year, so that will be something to keep an eye on. He played well in a limited sample of international competition this year, including a 51 save game against a loaded Canadian team.

Portal wise, if one of Pulver or Castro leaves in search of playing time I wouldn't be totally shocked. However if this is the room for next year I'm ok with it; some consistency year to year could be helpful.

Howie's got us, settled in and put up a helluva season as a frosh

As mentioned in the other Wisco thread, Blake Montgomery signed with the Ottawa Senators (assigned to the Belleville Senators) so another spot to fill. Seems like a dumb move - he needs to get bigger/stronger and is gonna get eaten up at the next level, even in the AHL.
